by Andrew Sacher Owen (aka Mike Kinsella of American Football, Cap'n Jazz, etc) has been working on new material , which will result in his new album, L'Ami due Peuple , due out on July 2 via Polyvinyl. Usually known for his bare acoustic songs with the occasional extra instrumentation worked in, for his new album he's taking a more full-band approach. You can hear the new sound on the singles "Blues to Black," which you can listen [...]

The top mp3s have gone through many incarnations since the beginning of Consequence of Sound in 2007. What used to be an exhaustive roundup of all the singles, remixes, covers, and undiscovered gems emailed to us any given week evolved into a compilation whittled down to our 10 favorite new songs. For 2013, we’re again changing up the format with the hope of giving our selections some added weight. We’re still posting about our 10 favorite songs, but they’ll be ordered in quality from 10-1. Who takes home #1 this week? You’ll have to click ‘Next’ to find [...]

Last weekend was a big one for Their/They're/There. Not only did the new band featuring members of Into it. Over it., Loose Lips Sink Ships and Owen/Cap'n Jazz (Evan Weiss, Matthew Frank and Mike Kinsella, respectively) release their debut self-titled EP on Polyvinyl Records , but they also played their first show - a Record Store Day in-store performance at Permanent Records .

There really is no time like the present. Owen , the longstanding solo project of Chicago music veteran Mike Kinsella , is gearing up to release his brand new album L'Ami du Peuple this summer. Owen has always dazzled listeners with his patented acoustic music complexities- a manipulated form of playing drawn from the spastic noodling of his former band (and seminal scenesters) Cap'n Jazz or the math rock repetitions of another past project American Football. For a number of releases, the Owen project felt as if it was the logical step for this style of [...]

Mike Kinsella has announced that he'll be releasing a new album this July through Polyvinyl. In addition to releasing a 7" for Record Store, and an EP via his new project Their/They're/There, Kinsella will release a new album as Owen titled L'Ami du Peuple on July through the aforementioned label. His seventh Owen LP will feature "female vocals, pounding drums, and even duelling electric guitar lines," which sounds good to us. It was produced by Neil Strauch (Iron & Wine, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Andrew Bird). Check out the [...]

If news of the New Guantanamo Coachella party didn't get you fired up, here are a few other unavoidable groaners from the week. You had throne-watcher supreme Jay-Z's "Open Letter" over the contrived Cuba trip-White House kerfuffle hype, then your boy RiFF RAFF is slated to guest on the soap "One Life to Live" as a self-referential art slinger named Jamie Franko as a nod to the Spring Breakers actor Alien (whose character was modeled after RiFF by director Harmony Kor...

Chicago songwriter Mike Kinsella has a pair of projects due as the weather warms this spring and summer: Owen - his main vehicle since 2001 - will release a 7th LP on July 2nd preceded by an EP on Record Store Day (4/20), while Their/They're/There - a newly formed trio with Evan Weiss and Matthew Frank - will drop their debut EP and LP on those exact dates. Per recent previews, both offer a feast for fans of melodic electric guitar. His intimate acoustic side might sit out this round, it seems, as Kinsella branched out with more [...]

Veteran singer-songwriter Mike Kinsella — whose past musical projects include American Football, Cap'n Jazz, Owls and Joan of Arc — will soon release the sixth album under his one-man moniker Owen . Titled L'Ami du Peuple (French for "The Friend of the People") and produced by Neil Strauch (Iron & Wine, Andrew Bird), it's due out on July 16th through longtime label Polyvinyl Records. Though not even four minutes long, the first single "Bad Blood" reads like a two-part story of maturation. In the beginning, the track lurches anxiously with pouncing pianos and Kinsella's trademark tricky [...]

New song from Owen from new album 'L'Ami de Peuple' out in July.
Though he wasn't performing in the sanctuary or the chapel, Mike Kinsella kept it intimate in the basement of the First Unitarian Church last night. His hour-long solo acoustic set under the Owen moniker opened with "A Trenchant Critique" from 20092s New Leaves, prompting the fanboys in the audience to gush audibly about Kinsella's voice, ...
