Chicago, IL Today marks the release of the latest from my favorite Kinsella (Mike, of course). At Home With Owen is the name of the new CD from Owen and it's just as pleasing as his previous releases on Polyvinyl . He's starting up a tour right now and will be in DC on December 7 at 9:30 Club . [...]
Owen At Home With Owen Score: 8 As I start writing more reviews here lately, you'll probably notice that I rarely score anything below a 7. My only justification for this is that I usually don't waste my time reviewing an album I don't like. That's simply for future reference if you're wondering why everything gets good reviews. Owen's newest album, At Home With Owen , takes Kinsella's age old Owen style and changes nothing but the amount of layers found in each song. [...]
When I woke up this morning, I didn't think that it's going to be Just Another Bad Day (Ripchord) at work. But on my way to work, police held me up for a routine check of my motorbike. I was expecting Bad News (Owen), but everything was fine and I could continue my way. As I Walk Into The Fight (Anamia), better known as the office, phones started ringing, people kept moaning, machines started

So, what the hell is going on with me lately? Updates have been sporadic, I know. I've been a bit overwhelmed the past few weeks for a number of reasons, most of them related to my real job. I really don't anticipate things slowing down at all, but I'm going to just muddle through. Since I'm so behind it's ridiculous, I decided that rather than spend hours and hours trying to catch up, I'd start out by posting a little mix of some great stuff that's found its way into my inbox in the [...]
Joan of Arc, Cap'n Jazz, Maritime, Aloha, Owls, The One Up Downstairs, American Football. If any of you are familiar with any of these bands, there's a pretty high chance that you've heard of Mike Kinsella. He's been behind all of these groups, and no matter how long they lasted, I've always noticed that these bands are always in constant rotation. This guy knows how to make good music, no
Today I attended a seminar on Investor Relations, which for the most part was quite interesting. Especially the lecture on how newsfeeds, blogs etc. rapidly are entering the world of IR was rather entertaining. Funny to see how the IRO's in the big companies suddenly are realizing the potential of the web. Really should be old news, but it was almost as if they has "seen the light". So I haven't

Curated by Nicodemus Agency & Polyvinyl Record Co. in Champaign-Urbana, IL. MOKB was asked to be a promotional partner in the Pygmalion Music Festival , a great Midwest music fest. Thanks, we're delighted and flattered. It's a great lineup and I'm looking forward to being there! Here's the offical press release and the schedule with sample mp3s: Conviently located at the center of the Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis triangle, and the home to the University of Illinois it no wonder that C-U has fostered [...]
Been feeling a bit epic-indie-ish the past few weeks. I found this track in an email and it fit the bill with its piano, whiney lyrics and stop-start transitions. Not to trash the song too much as it is a worthwhile download, it just doesnt strike me as anything particularly outstanding - so I am submitting it for public consumption (?). Mike Kinsella alone is Owen and this is the first track from the upcoming album titled At Home With and can be found on Polyvinyl Record Co come November 7th [...]
Non so voi, ma per la maggior parte delle persone le vacanze sono terminate e l'inevitabile conseguenza è il ritorno al posto di lavoro. Allora, godiamoci qualche canzone che ci fa ricordare la nostra attuale situzione. C'è forse del masochismo in me? I feel guilty receiving emails from new bands and then just ignoring them. One function of this blog is to help promote new indie music. The internet is the new medium for these hard working emerging bands to get exposure. I will admit that I don't necessarily like everything I hear but you may like what you hear. The whole point is to get the music out there for people to experience good or bad. So, here is the latest explosion of artists from my email inbox. I am really interested in what you [...]

Aloha drummer Cale Parks has a solo album coming out in September, and I highly recommend it. Xylophone, twinkles, beats and gentle crooning make Illuminated Manuscript a seriously strong record. Cale Parks: Wet Paint If you're in the mood for thumping, sexy and hand-clapping goodness, check out The Blow's "Pile of Gold" (via K Records ). Khaela Maricich is a "... pop musician, visual artist, and performer," and you can also read her [...]

i just got a lovely bit of news about one of my favorite musicians in indie rock. share in my joy: Mike and Tim Kinsella - you know them as the masterminds behind such band projects as Joan of Arc, Cap'n Jazz, and my personal favorite, American Football - are parting ways for a generous amount of time to pour their all (as they always do) into Owen , Mike's solo moniker, and Tim's band Make Believe . though i like Tim's side projects, it's Owen whom i'm focused on (sorry man). [...]

Mike Kinsella, your reputation proceeds you. As a youth, you helped launch important bands like Cap'n Jazz , Joan of Arc , and American Football , and then, when it seemed like you were done creating Chicago's official list whos-who of indie rock, you even began playing in a band called Owls with your brother Tim. Why is it then that critics have chosen to openly pick on your solo project, Owen ? I remember when I first saw your solo show, on the Mewithoutyou tour [...]
if you have been visiting this dump for a while you will know that i dig all things related to the kinsellas, tim and mike that is. i did a cap n jazz, joan of arc, promise ring, etc mix tape a couple of months back in case you missed it. so it should be no suprise that i am psyched about their two upcoming solo releases. mike kinsella records under the moniker of owen and is set to release at home on 11.7 via polyvinyl. bad news [...]
Top 5 songs of the week Toodles. Evanescence "Call Me When You're Sober" [From album "The Open Door"] Norma Jean "Blueprints For Future Homes" [From album "Reedemer"] Breaking Benjamin "Diary of Jane" (acoustic/piano) [From album "Phobia"] Owen "The Sad Waltzes Of Pietro Crespi" [...]
Emily Haines and The Soft Skeleton - The Lottery - Metric's lead singer makes solo goodness. Sugar-voiced and silky. Owen - Bad News - I've never been able to explain why I like Owen so much. It's just pleasant. Fingerpicking clear acoustic, layers of other texture. Brutally honest lyrics. Mike Kinsella is the man. Fionn Regan - The Underwood Typewriter - another quirky bouncy effort from this talented young UK songwriter. Jamie [...]
Just the other day I was going on about how over production took away from John Darnielle’s work. Now, I’m doing a complete 180 and raving about how Brian Deck has helped create the most accessible Owen (Mike Kinsella) record to date. Owen is the moniker of music veteran, Mike Kinsella ( Maritime, American Football, Cap N’ Jazz, the Owls, Joan of Arc ). In a sort of six degrees of Davey Von Bohlen , I’ve been listening to a lot of artists that at one time or another were associated with the [...]
