Taking over Champaign, Illinois for a four day swing in September will be the third annual Pygmalion Music Festival , which has just released the schedules for the weekend and a presumably finalized lineup. Being in festival production myself means that you should never take this as the final word - there will almost always be late adds or cancellations, and show times are always subject to change. However, you should feel pretty good about your chances to check out a bunch of pretty damn awesome bands. The festival runs from September 19 to the 22nd and will be [...]

Crowded House will release a new studio album, Time On Earth , on July 2nd. It's the first release with new drummer Matt Sherrod (formerly with Beck ), and the first "proper" studio album after 1993's Together Alone (there have been various Best-Of-compilation and last year's fabulous live-album Farewell To The World ). I've just been listening to the new stuff, and it sounds great. The guys haven't lost their talent [...]
I don't know many people who can deny the excellence of perfect acoustic music backed up by the songwriter's voice crooning out a song that you can tell is most sincere. The record label with the glory of promoting Owen is none other than Poly Vinyl Records . They also happen to be the label for artists such as: Of Montreal , Matt Pond PA and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin , just to name a few. Sean Moeller from Daytrotter.com recently wrote a bit [...]

The Chicago indie scene is very aware of Mike Kinsella, and his solo project Owen . Kinsella creates a foundation with his acoustic melodies, and layers it with various instruments and his mellow voice. His latest album, At Home With Owen was just released on Polyvinyl Records. Add this Band on Myspace [...]

I suppose instead I will do this weeks radio show here! \\Open Road - Alex Woodard \\Cold Day - Sonya Kitchell Ive been enjoying Sonya Kitchell's work for some time now. This song is just beautiful. \\Coast is Clear - In

Okay, I'm a bit skitterish about this one, so please bear with me. Back in early December, I went group-by-group, song-by-song through a long list of artists I found at the 2006 South-by-Southwest festival website . I sampled every song I didn't already know and prepared my own list of the ones I liked best, old friends and new. For various reasons totally uninteresting even to myself I've just never posted a big bloc of the songs, some of which are by some of my favorite current artists. Soooooo, I'm simply [...]

So today, I'm finally dedicating a blog post to one of my favorite artists: Owen (Mike Kinsella). Somehow, he's made appearances in assignments and best-of lists, but never his own entry. Here it is buddy. He's Polyvinyl's prodigal son, appearing in a long lineage of benchmark bands like Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, Owls, and American Football. Owen is his solo pseudonym and the current manifestation of his melodic, soothing sound. His lyrics are profound, especially when bringing haunting relevance to post-breakup emotions. It's usually bittersweet, filled with longing and finality, his voice simultaneously pleading for [...]
All right. Time to get back into it. The music that is. For awhile, I'd been interested in picking up some of Mike Kinsella's (drummer from Joan of Arc) stuff. In particular, his American Football endeavor because the few tracks I heard reminded me so much of American Analog Set. I [...]
25a. Sondre Lerche and the Faces Down Quartet - Duper Sessions I was somewhat surprised when I first learned about this album. Sondre doing jazz wasn't too surprising, since his style fits it nicely, but I had no idea he'd been working with a quartet for his next album. The results were even better than I imagined and, while it's more downtempo than his usual songs, the temporary switch in style was an enjoyable change for us long time Sondre fans mp3: [...]
Afgelopen zomer was ik in Berlijn. Op de camping in Berlijn raakte ik aan de praat met een Amerikaanse meisje, die met haar broer in de tent naast ons sliep. Zij bleek een enorme fan van The Mars Volta te...

Dinnertime at my house can sometimes be a little hectic. My two-year-old is a little bit of a nut, so I created a playlist on the ole' Ipod full of music that the Mrs. and I quite enjoy but has the added benefit of relaxing our savage beast. Owen's 2004 full-length I Do Perceive is major player in our quest for a peaceful dinner. Owen is Chicago multi-instrumentalist Matt Kinsella's solo project. Having played in a who's who of Chicago bands [...]

Before I went to work yesterday I saw an interesting commercial. It was for a new Japanese restaurant here in Auburn or something, and I know you're saying huh? What's so interesting about that you say? Well here's the catch, it had a DRIVE-THRU, i'm sorry but that's amazing to me. I asked myself how is that at all possible considering having to keep the food fresh and fast, but that question only lasted a few seconds as I decided I didn't care and that I needed to go see this for myself. After work I [...]
