The Ozark Mountains, and all its rivers and streams, are beyond the ideal setting for music played in real time. In real life. 10 miles from me one way there is a quaint little smattering of primitive cabins on the river. 10 miles the other way is the old, restored mill, with its own little happy gathering of dwellings. It would seem to me that land such as this would breed such beautiful music but in terms of those making it around here, there are no terms. It's not happening. The only strumming of a guitar the trees [...]

This is The Ozark Mountain Daredevils , live at The Roxy, Los Angeles, California, back on December 11th, 1975. This was the final gig from a three night residency at the venue and was broadcast on FM radio. The Ozark Mountain Daredevils formed in 1972 in Springfield, Missouri, USA. They are most widely known for their singles "If You Wanna Get To Heaven" in 1974 and "Jackie Blue" in 1975. The group's demo tape eventually caught the attention of A&M Records staff producer David Anderle, who was looking for an Eagles [...]

Ozark Mountain Daredevils : Southern Cross [ purchase ] Please join me in welcoming our newest poster here on Star Maker Machine, Saint from 1001 Songs . Last week Aimee Mann tweeted " I think it's time I started really listening to some Ozark Mountain Daredevils." Some of us couldn't agree with her more. The original OMD were a fun loving country pop outfit made up of talented songwriters who wore their hair a bit too long for hometown Springfield, Missouri. That, apparently, was [...]

Several days ago I wondered how audiences reacted upon first hearing Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and, similarly, I can't help but imagine what it must have been like to see the climatic scene of Planet Of The Apes in the theater. I wasn't even walking when the original Planet Of The Apes was released in 1968, so I ended up viewing it for the first time on television in the '70s no doubt on the CBS Friday Night Movie . Planet Of The Apes is a classic [...]

I have to confess that I wasn't really too attuned to the music of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils during the 1970s, when the country-rock sextet was hitting the charts with regularity. In fact, I can't say that I even remember the group in those days, but that was mostly because I wasn't really listening to that kind of music at the time. In later years I learned to appreciate the Daredevils, who spent several years as one of the best country-rock bands around, with hit songs like "If You Want To Get To Heaven" and the chart-topping "Jackie Blue." [...]

Ozark Mountain Daredevils - Spaceship Orion ...one of those nights before a little trip when you stay up late packing and getting your affairs in order so you can relax on the trip, and then when all the affairs are satisfactorily in order and it's finally time for bed you listen to that one OMD track to bear you aloft to dreamland...

The first time staying over at a friend's house as a kid is akin to being an emissary on a diplomatic mission to a foreign state. Strict instructions were given in a parental briefing to do nothing that would cause an incident. Like any trip abroad, there were different sights and smells, strange customs and unusual foodstuffs. The first time I stayed over at my friend Beej's house, I learned that pancakes made for a perfectly acceptable dinner fare - something that was highlighted in my report upon my return home. The most memorable thing about [...]

It's that time of year again! It's inside of 24 hours of me getting on a plane and heading for the mountains of Colorado for a glorious week of sliding down a mountain. While I am gone I've lined up some great guest posts for y'all. I hope you guys enjoy it. For me, I am about to shut this laptop off, put it in my carry-on and pop the top on one of my homebrews and start drinking.... CAUSE I'M ON VACATION BITCHES! See y'all in a week. The Lost Cabin Sessions are the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' first studio recordings from 1972. To my knowledge these early recordings were first officially released sometime in 2003 off the Varese cd label. The band would go on to become a well known and very successful country pop group similar in sound to the Eagles or the Pure Prairie League. While that sound is a bit commercial and somewhat formula driven, these early recordings represent something a little different. These 18 songs highlight a wonderful group whose sound was caught between the less bluesier aspects of [...]

Here's the second part of the Southern rock (rawk) classics. I think some folks enjoyed part 1 so I figured I would do another one. A lot of these were in the 70's and pre-dated my immersion into 80's music. So, they have a special significance to my music upbringing. I love all kinds of rock music, there are no real limits to me. Enjoy! mp3 If You Want To Get To Heaven (Ozark Mountain Daredevils - Best Of Southern Rock) [...]
