Mat Riviere Having kicked things off in Cardiff, CAMP Basement tonight is the second stop along the bus route that is BRNLV Records 2010 Tour. Up first is the ever-intense Mat Riviere : lurching half bent on the floor a stream of esoteric lyrics splutter out over his incredible array of noise, gadgetry and instruments. A certain ferocity seems to overcome this quiet natured Norwich based artist the moment his trembling lips reach the microphone, only to be hushed by rare moments of uncanny silence ushered in by delicate keys. These are only momentary states [...]

Pagan Wanderer Lu From: Cardiff/Bolton, United Kingdom Pagan Wanderer Lu is Andy Regan (born in Bolton) a one-man 'Indietronica' band originally formed in Aberystwyth but now based in Cardiff. As Pagan Wanderer Lu Andy, who also passes his time playing bass in Silence At Sea , has self released countless albums and EPs of world weary, witty ditties. He is a uniquely British, razor sharp commentator [...]

"A few hundred megabytes on iTunes no-one will ever listen to" This is how Andy Regan, aka as (and sole member of) Pagan Wanderer Lu , describes his latest album on its greatest track, the epically titled 'God in His Wisdom and Compassion Spares the Mona Lisa from Being Engulfed by the Dying Sun'. The song is a revelatory moment on what was already, up to this point, a banging record: it's the moment the album miraculously becomes a sentient and self-aware being entirely of its own making; it's the moment the album transcends pop music and [...]

'Banish Negative Thoughts' is the first single from Pagan Wanderer Lu's European Monsoon . To celebrate the TLOBF premiere of the new video, we caught up with the man himself to talk about anger, awfulness, being misunderstood and jumping in the air 400 times. Hi PWL! This is a pretty angry song. What's eating you? The usual really. The comforting embrace of bullshit which I envy and despise in equal measure... So what's that crazy sound on the start of the track? What have you [...]

This is a not entirely accurately-titled podcast, in that the whoring only takes place over a couple of songs at the tail end and does not at all influence any of the rest of the playlist. What am I talking about, you ask? Well when I played a few trendy songs a few months back the listership of the podcast doubled over the course of a few weeks. I noticed this back when I was a bit more rigorous about the blog in the early days: if I reviewed high-profile new releases in the week of release it [...]

To wrap up an amazing 2009, Brainlove Records is to release a final EP by one the label's mainstays, Cardiff's Pagan Wanderer Lu . The lead track is one of the closing trilogy of songs from Pagan Wanderer Lu's album "magnum opus" (Plan B Magazine) "Fight My Battles For Me" . "Pockets In Shrouds" is an acoustic folk song, on the very Christmassy subject of death. The song features Laura and David from PWL's sometime backing band The Volunteers , who add scratchy Dirty [...]

Artist: Pagan Wanderer Lu Album: Fight My Battles For Me Label: Brainlove Records Website: www.myspace.com/paganwandererl u Words by: Danny Wadeson Pagan Wanderer Lu is as bizarre a prospect as his name implies. 'Whimsical' is perhaps the single word best used to sum up this collection of tracks, and smiles are perhaps the most visible result of listening to them. Songs range in time honoured tradition from loud to quiet, and there are lyrics and instruments. Beyond that we find [...]

Last week at work I was having a conversation with my colleagues about the Omnichord (that sort of thing happens – it's fun to work there sometimes), which has led in a roundabout way to this post. For those who don't know the Omnichord, it's a hand-held electronic instrument, which has buttons for chords and a touch plate which is strummed with a rubber plectrum to make a sort of electronic harp sound (more photos here if you're interested). I remember my friend's parents having one back in the 80s, and us sitting in his lounge [...]

Build Library Here (or else!) is a reissue of the first major release from Wales' own Pagan Wanderer Lu, the one man electro casio indie keyboard guitar drums n bass soloman who more recently released the quite excellent Independent Scrutineer mini album on Brainlove records. Originally released as a DIY compilation of songs from his early live sets, its re-release gives those of us who enjoyed Scrutineer and who have yet to see him live a chance to get a bit of a fuller picture. Luckily the material here is just as strong as more [...]

If you're at all familiar with the London gig scene then you've probably already heard of Pagan Wanderer Lu. There's certainly been a lot of mentions on sites like Drowned In Sound, and not only because of the enthusiastic plugging of the guy releasing his material. The man in question is of course the venerable John Brainlove, who released a new six song PWL mini album, The Independent Scrutineer on his own Brainlove Records this past monday. PWL presents a sort of Helen Loveish mixture of indie pop and casiopop/folktronica/whateva-y ou-wanna-call-it with the pov of a [...]
