This edition of the MFR Throwback Mix series pretty much sums up my junior year of college. If you can guess the theme, you win a free shirt. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Tick" Awesome Snakes - "The Snakes Get High" Arctic Monkeys - "I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor" Menomena - "Wet And Rusting" [...]

We've been doing up the floors in our house, stripping out the carpet, repainting the walls, painting the trim and doors, and laying down a rich brown woven bamboo (hence the lateness of this post and the general lack of posts this week). It's a project that should add equity to our house and, one day, our pockets. I threw this playlist together Friday morning and set to work stripping carpet from the hallway while it played in the background. Then I threw on some vinyl and rounded out the [...]

The ladies of the Steam Co. love our dogs. Katie lives with pups Diane and Coco, and Alyssa with Ms. Winnie. In addition to her Ms. W., Alyssa has been sitting for her two nieces for the past few days, bringing her doggie total to an unmanageable 3. No matter how much we love them, this week has drawn to a close with the conclusion that more than two woofers in an apartment are just too many, especially for just one gal. To the end of Alyssa's dogsitting days and in honor of the pups we [...]
It's 2011, and there's so much happening. Not only are we working on our year end lists for the best songs, albums, bands and more of 2010, but we're also prepping Advance Spins of upcoming releases from a bunch of artists and bands, ranging from Bright Eyes, Minks, The Strokes, The Decemberists, Smith Westerns and [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
I'm feeling a very strong and perhaps inappropriate urge to fire up this tiny little feature today (we've done A Tiny Mix highlighting Hypem favorites before - check it here ) and to title it "Hypem Hard-On". But I'm curious, can I use that word? It's vulgarity does not stress me but as I do not bear that particular body part, can I claim an actual hard-on for these jams? Like, is that okay? Fuck it. I'm gonna spend the next half hour making a graphic featuring a gramophone and the word "hard-on". Noble cause. I just [...]

53. Bright Eyes - The First Day Of My Life Listen to this, turning a globe in your ends, dotting the places you've been: I was born here, here and here. 52. Uzi + Ari - Don't Black Out I've noticed I tend to be quite partial to anything that concerns itself thematically with the link between falling asleep and the cold. I'm not sure why, maybe some sort of Hibernian affinity for [...]

This is a strange, strange album, although not obviously so. It's like a slightly croonsome, quite country album was being listened to through a pair of earphones which might have been built by someone in the Flaming Lips. It's not that there's anything Flaming Lipsy about the album at all, it's just there's clearly something funny about it, in a manner in which I sort of think they might approve. Maybe it's because this feels a bit like a pleasant alt-country album being delivered by someone in one of their giant stage bunny costumes. I guess if you [...]
Michael Nau is a good liar. In fact, he's so good that we have no problem with his dishonesty. As difficult as it may be to believe, he, wife Whitney McGraw, and the rest of Cumberland, Maryland's Cotton Jones aren't from the 60's, and their music wasn't recorded then, either. The truth is that the former Page France members play the part so meticulously, in such a humble, unfettered way, that it could pass for a legitimate, obscure, accidental throwaway from a bygone era. Don't believe me? Play Tall Hours in the Glowstream for your father. My [...]

Photography by me ! I'd like to tell you a little story... A semi-tragic love story, if you will, between myself & a little mobile phone service provider named Sprint . It's a long story, so how about we start up the tunes now, let you settle in, and snuggle up for a, hopefully, good read. Push play and let's begin our story as... TSURURADIO Presents... Baby, Don't Forget My Number!!! The Story & Mixtape Of The Trials & [...]

It's easy to forget Michael Nau and Whitney McGraw played in Page France together before forming Cotton Jones. Mostly because with Paranoid Cocoon and the Rio Ranger EP, they've created a persona and sound so unbelievably raw and pure that it's hard to imagine any other music possible. Tall Hours In The Glowstream , the group's next full-length, is scheduled to be released August 24. Cotton Jones - "Glorylight and Christie" (from Tall Hours In The Glowstream )
Cotton Jones will release their sophomore album, Tall Hours In The Glowstream , this coming August 24th through Suicide Squeeze Records . Check for the band oun tour in the U.S. throughout August. Ms. Belle Cafritz, I think I'm in love with you . MP3: Page France - "Dogs" Love, Zack
I wonder what an appropriate cut-off is for time passage before inclusion in this project. 3 months? 6 months? A year? I'm not sure. I kind of think that, if there's something that is immediately undeniable, I could include it the very next week. I have nothing like that today, but maybe at some point [...]
We’ve been off of these for a while, and hope that we have new readers since the last time we did, so if you need an explanation or some background on what we’re trying to accomplish with this list, please go here. If you’re up to speed already, then read on. 81. Third Eye Blind – [...]
Just listen to this. Coke Rats - "Dinnertime" (Download) I KNOW, RIGHT? We mentioned Coke Rats a little while a go, and apparently for good reason. "Dinnertime" is like a less refined Grizzly Bear, or a more morbid Page France. And yet how unknown is this band? When I Googled their name for a picture, I just got images of Coke bottles and rats. After searching HypeM, I can say that as of last night no one else has written about them. This just blows my mind. [...]

I planned on finishing this before tomorrow, but I'm having not enough time to do it like I did for numers 50 - 31. So, the next texts are gonna be shorter, very short. Just a sentence and a song. Hope you don't mind. 30. Megafaun - Gather, Form And Fly ( Home Tapes ) What? Band rooted in indie country, but opening up to a whole array of genres [...]

The awesome air-violin performed with cat-gut strings Today is Violin Day which would also make it Fiddle Day. I've always wondered the difference between the two instruments and after doing some online research, apparently there's no difference, except in the genre of music one chooses to play. Page France - Mr. Violin And Dancing Bear During the eighties, Vanessa Mae was the young, British prodigy child who could play the hell out of Bach on her fiddle violin. She's all grown-up now and still [...]

2005 opened my eyes to a world of new music. I joined the crew at KZUU over the summer, my first summer back in Pullman working toward my Masters in Business. I'd spend my two-hour show pouring over thousands of obscure albums, looking for anything that might spark my interest. While music had always been a borderline obsession, until now it was just that - borderline. In the days that passed, it became a full-fledged consumption of everything me. There are turning points in all of our lives, and DJing at KZUU was absolutely one [...]

Given that this band has its roots in the lovely, borderline gospel, old-time Americana of the Cotton Jones Basket Ride, I'd say that Rio Ranger was a bit of a surprise, as an EP. I don't know if I'm just being perverse, because a lot of the same elements are still there, but this atmosphere seems a little different now. Maybe that was the reason for the name change - maybe they felt they'd settled on the kind of band they wanted to be after the demise of Page France, and the sound had kind of fallen into [...]
My personal enjoyment with the show Weeds has declined with each passing season, but the one thing for which I’ll be forever grateful (other than choice Kevin Nealon lines) is the introduction to the (now defunct) band Page France. Dave and I are both the type of guy who will pick ...
