Words by Raymond Morin Ed. note: We love when Pittsburgh people ask to write something special for us, so when our friend Raymond Morin, from the incredible guitar duo Pairdown , offered to review the new Triggers album, we couldn't resist. Aside from being a guitar virtuoso, Morin has his own guitar-based blog called Work and Worry , so we really didn't need to ask for any sample writing. So hey, see what Raymond has to say about Pittsburgh's indie power pop group, Triggers . [...]

Words by Jim Is it really that time of year already? I swear two weeks ago it was 100 degrees, sunny, and we were eating apple pie and shooting off fireworks. I won't complain too much, though. I love the Christmas (err...Holiday) Season and get a lot of enjoyment out of the decorations, the good will, shopping and giving to loved ones, and eating and drinking until I explode. Not to mention the time off from work is much needed and appreciated. To help us get in the holiday spirit at DUL, and to [...]

Hey. How's it going? Good, great. So, yeah, you might be new here. Maybe you're a freshman at Pitt or CMU or somewhere else. That's terrific and we applaud your good choice in city. But maybe you're not exactly new here, and you're finding yourself ready to explore the town and uncover it's wonders. You're like a goddamn pearl diver, ready to take the plunge and come up for air with a little bit of treasure. Well, we're here to help you with that whole situation. It could definitely seem like a staggering endeavor. We understand. We went through it [...]

Mountain Man & Pairdown / Club Cafe / 07.24.2011 / Doors 7:00 / $8 Words by Jim You might expect a band with the name Mountain Man to be comprised of several burly, beard-wearing hipsters, perhaps smelly in fragrance, but gentle in disposition. That's a good guess, guy, but wrong. So wrong. The fact that Mountain Man is a trio of fair faced women may come as a surprise, but let's also discuss the fact that these three women have perhaps the most beautiful [...]

Jerry's Records in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. While I'm a bit suspicious of the growing Luddism of vinyl jockeys, I can appreciate the ideas that smaller music stores are coming up with. They have the ability to scurry and fill a market hole to which larger chains just aren't agile enough to detect and cater. There's movement at the local shops in Pittsburgh to promote Record Store Day : Locally, 7-inch singles remain a popular format for bands, and some, like Pairdown [...]

There's something of a plain quality to this record. It's very straightforward, and the delivery is pretty unadorned with straining or flourish. Stylistically, it's a largely acoustic indie album, layered with vocal harmonies which strive more to create depth and nuance than to soar or dance. The acoustic guitar is meanderingly plucked throughout, occasionally hinting at the insistent pace of the Dodos, but never quite going that far. More usually, there's an interplay between pick and strum much the same as the one between the vocals; one which creates a good depth of sound without ever feeling the [...]

Pairdown is the collaboration of Pittsburgh-based singer-guitarists David Leicht and Raymond Morin . They have been playing together since 2005, exploring different moods and tunings for the acoustic guitar. Their full-length Holykyle has just been released on Morin's one-man label Sort Of Records . They name British folk bands like Pentangle and The Incredible String Band as their influences. There are hints of Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left in there too. Holykyle is a gentle album that will appeal to fellow acoustic players and hardcore folk fanatics who [...]
Hello Everyone ! Thanks for hanging in there through the lack of posts while I was away and while I continue to sort out the file hosting issues. Lots more good things coming your way. Here's a great event you should try and check out if you possibly can. Hey all you folks within range of Pittsburgh, PA, you're going to want to get on down to the Brillo Box this Saturday March 10th and take part in the big 1-Year Anniversary Party for [...]

David Bernabo and Pairdown (photo above) have released two of the sort of strange electro-acoustic records that I've been liking of late. Their new records are out soon on Sort Of Records . Since I'm writing about them together it's now going to be impossible for me to think of them seperately. David Bernabo is one half of the band Vale and Year. Word Roses will be his first widely available solo record. I like the song "In Hell" below but there [...]
