Infamously cantankerous studio rat/national treasure Steve Albini doesn't like to be called a record producer. He prefers the term "recording engineer." That's a dry, clinical term for what Albini actually does, but it makes sense that he'd prefer to be seen that way. Over the past few decades, Albini has overseen the creation of countless numbers of recorded artifacts. And even though he's been an outspoken opponent of the major-label system (and of other underground-rock heroes), he's known to work with just about anyone who requests his services, whether it's a major-label juggernaut like '90s radio-grunge rulers Bush or the [...]
Feeling slightly better this morning (my fever broke in the middle of the night, which is always a weird feeling - waking up in a pool of your own sweat but cooler and somewhat relieved) I donned my Sunday Best and drove out to Topanga State Park for my dear friends Fawn and Brian's wedding. [...]
Palace Music — New Partner From Viva Last Blues ( Drag City ; 1995) There is some awful action that just breathes from my hand / Just breaths from a deed so exquisitely grand
"I had a dream last night that a woman placed her old, worn hand around the back of my neck. Her bracelet hung cold and limp against my skin. I still felt her palm around me as I regained consciousness. After a few moments, I rolled over. There was no one there." [Palace Music - [...]

Words by Rick Molsen If you're like me, you love going to the bar to talk about your favorite music. If you're not like me, that probably means you're at a bar because you have an actual date (ouch). Even if you're not at a pub reading this from your iPhone, feel free to crack open a beer and drink up as we talk about independent record labels a bit. They're not only businesses, but they act as a predominant way of discovering new music, because let's face it, if a label signs a [...]

SPOOK HILL :: SEPTEMBER MIXTAPE :: BOY ATTRACTIONS Walker and I have had this one in the works for a while. We decided a month or so ago (after our last mixtape) that we wanted to try something a bit different from our usual mixes. We settled on the idea of compiling our favorite songs recorded before 2000 that were relatively unknown or obscure (or at least if the artist was relatively known, one of their hidden gems). That was really the only restriction. Interestingly enough, there was a clear divide in the years [...]

we all, us three, will ride off viva last blues // this should have been in my to 20 of all time favorite records. essential listening, imo Tags: essential , palace , palace brothers , palace music , viva last blues , will oldham

Today is a special day for those romantics amongst us. Or those who like bitter-sweet love songs, in which the usual tropes of love songs get turned on their head. Miserable gits who like miserable songs, in other words. Josh Rouse's "Sweetie" is one of his beautifully sung, gorgeously composed numbers that he seems able to turn out in his sleep. Seriously, does anyone have such a gift of picking out a tune as Josh? His tender voice sings plaintively over strummed acoustic guitar during the chorus, with the last line spelling out the [...]
"New Partner," the brilliant ballad from Palace Music 's bar-setting, perfect 1995 collection Viva Last Blues , is the second-greatest song Will Oldham has written, in our humble opinion. His best song is the distressingly sad (to the extent we can't bring ourselves to listen to it sometimes) but absurdly titled "You Have Cum In Your Hair And Your Dick Is Hanging Out." But that is a topic for another day. Over a recent weekend we wondered to ourselves why no one had ever covered "New Partner," and moseyed on over to YouTube to see what [...]

In the spirit of super groups (see previous post), the weapon brings you Monsters of Folk. The name would be fitting if the band consisted of Will Oldham, Jeff Mangum, and Samuel Beam, but it doesn't. Members Conor Oberst , M. Ward , Jim James, and Mike Mogis are Monsters of Folk - and I'll be honest - they make me remember why I LOVED THE CRAP out of Fevers and Mirrors so hard (yes, I just said I loved something "so hard"....) when I was 16. The reason: BECAUSE ITS REALLY FREAKING GOOD. Period. And [...]

death On Monday night, I filled out a job application for the first time in almost 4 years. It's for a government gig (Death Panel Co-Ordinator), so it was a pretty laborous process - I think I spent a little over three hours filling it out online. This was done, naturally, while tending to my current job. If I'm gonna spend that much time filling something out, I might as well be getting paid while doing it. The process got me thinking about songs that involve working in some way. As the resident indie-popper, [...]

been listening to mr will oldham and his many monikers quite a bit lately. one thing i have come to realize about his music that i didnt when i started listening to him, many moons ago, is that while most of his songs sound absolutely dreadful and solemn they are actually quite uplifting, in a sense. just started to understand this about him and his work recently. anyone else get that same feeling? here he is as will oldham performing on kusf-fm, san francisco on 10.8.98. in rar format 1. You Should Know Most obligatory Hallmark-holiday ever. Woo, nothing says "I love you" more than drugstore chocolates and $15 flower bouquets. Do something creative. Make something. Give it to the person you love on a day it isn't expected. It will mean more to them. Unless they are lame. -- Cap Listen: [...]

I have been meaning to post on Will Oldham for a while now, but for one reason or another something else has always come first. Well, with the new Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album 'Beware' out in less than a months time, I am making my move...and with Valentines day just a few days away - if I tack on the Palace Music song of the same name to the post, it looks like it has a purpose. MP3: Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Brokedown Palace MP3: Palace [...]

Cartman Sucks by Alex Carnevale After we die from Al Gore, mankind will review its greatest accomplishments. Many of the most important will have been accomplished by South Park scribe Trey Parker, the visionary force behind the greatest show in the history of the television medium. You see, Eric Cartman makes a habit of inviting over sad sack naive Butters to his house for sleepovers. "do you want to play games, eric, or just chit chat [...]

Palace Music - " Untitled [live] " available on Lost Blues and Other Songs (1997) If I wrote songs, this is what they'd sound like: raw, rollicking, inspired. I cannot stress enough the value of this Palace Music collection . I just ordered the new B 'P' B album. I hear it's good. Item : stay tuned to Drag City for the new Silver Jews album next week. Everyone have a good weekends? If your big Halloween party was Friday or Saturday night, I hope you took my costume advice. Otherwise, you've got until Wednesday to figure out how to dress as the dirty sex act known as "space docking." As for me, I was rather inebriated last evening. Drunkest I've been in a very long time. I have...I have weird flashes of memories, but not much else. I awoke with on the couch with a weird bruise on the right side of my torso. Anyone who commented on Thursday's post will receive their personalized top [...]

Palace - " West Palm Beach " and " Gulf Shores " from Lost Blues and Other Songs (compilation, 1997) These songs were originally released on a 73 in 1995 and can now be had on the fabulous Palace compilation. Usually perceived as mountain man, Will Oldham had a beachcomber past, which included these supremely relaxing tracks. You'd better buy now. There aren't many left in the world. Posted by Jordy
