Our first mention of Pale Air Singers came way back in May when I dropped a drunken review of their debut album into the Citizen Dick ether. Since then it has been one of a very small handful of albums that I have made a point to squeeze into my regular rotation this year. I am often considered one of the more finicky Dicks when it comes to embracing new albums, but this record did it for me from day one and I will probably still be spinning it consistently at this time next [...]

again, with the freakin canadians, but this time they come as a collective or collaborative, whatever you want to call it. the pale air singers are made up of members of calgary's cape may and victoria's run chico run. dont think i have heard of either, but no matter. im currently on track 4, "horse trade," and its got kind of a girls can tell era spoon vibe going on, which is always good, but really it doesnt sound much like spoon, just the vibe. the opener "convict escpes," almost sounds like an americana-y sea and cake, and [...]

This album comes from amongst the small avalanche which filled up my inbox while I was away in Italy, and it has taken me a little while to get to it, as I've slowly sorted through everything which came my way in June. Even then, it's far from a new album to begin with, having actually been released back in April. The Pale Air Singers are on Flemish Eye Records , who are a really superb little record label (Women, Chad VanGaalen) and this is a collaboration between Run Chico Run and another Flemish Eye band, The [...]

To celebrate the anniversary of the independence of our neighbors to the north, today we bring you a very special mid-week edition of our popular Sunday Radio Dick feature. 364 days out of the year Canada gets to be the butt of the world's jokes, but today we are focusing on the positive contributions they have made. When thinking of Canada, the first thing that comes to mind for me (besides legalized gambling and an arrest warrant that I probably shouldn't talk about here) is the incredible indie music scene. In fact, I would have to say that Canada is [...]

You can't really look anywhere without at least hearing someone mentioning Passion Pit and their debut titled Manners . I'm not exactly on the bandwagon quite yet, as I still think the lead singer's falsetto makes me want to pull my hair out. But for the most part, the music itself is catchy and that can make the difference in some instances. From the singer-songwriter side of the spectrum, you're in luck, as a few well-known names have new albums out this week including John Vanderslice and Iron & Wine [...]

We're all about full disclosure here at Citizen Dick, and given that fact I am going to let you all in on a few secrets right now. First, though you are likely reading this review on a lovely Tuesday morning, I actually wrote it last night before I went to bed. Second, I accidentally got fairly drunk on Monday night. I will let you draw your own conclusions from those two bits of information; I'm confident that you'll figure it out where I'm going with that. My state of inebriation likely means different things to different people, but what it [...]

Fraser - House on a Hill myspace || buy CD This Ontario singer probably hates the reading snippets written about his work. I mean, most are complimentary – and deservedly so – but the ease at which his songs force you to think about other artists must start to grate on the young man. I usually try to avoid the "sounds-like" trap, but on House on the Hill there are terrific subdued moments that help Fraser sound like Teitur (the opening number Dusklight and [...]

Pale Air Singers are a collaborative recording project between The Cape May and Run Chico Run. Their debut is out May 19th via Flemish Eye Records. More about the album: Pale Air Singers' debut album is rich with layered, vocal harmonies and complex interplay of rhythm and instrumentation. The album, recorded in two intensive and blurry sessions in the band's respective locations in Calgary and Victoria, hints at the output of either band while reaching a place where neither have ever traveled. Written and recorded in an improvisational fashion with very few expectations on genre or [...]

What is going on around in my fellow bloggers world that is of concern to me (and hence you)? Well, I am glad you asked. Let me drop some links for you for items of note for me (and hence you). ~~~ Captain Obvious has put up a post on Joe Purdy in light of his new album "Last Clock on the Wall" , which is quickly becoming a favourite of mine. Great folk country from quite a prolific artist. My good friend [...]

If you're staying home tonight, and why wouldn't you, you might want to check out The Fifth Estate on CBC at 9 p.m., as they present "Staying Alive", their documentary on Vancouver's Supervised Injection Site . If you watch closely, you might see me in the background. But that's not why you should watch it, and don't let it distract from the most indepth look at the SIS in broadcast history. The fine people at Flemish Eye have announced the May 19th release of the self-titled debut album from the Pale [...]
