Reading about Pale Sketcher, the electronic project of Justin Broadrick, aka the dude who was in Napalm Death aka the dude who does Jesu, always felt like a serious What The Hell? moment. But whatever, ... read more

Along with a lot of excellent new EPs and singles, this year has seen the official release of Light Asylum 's In Tension , our favorite EP of 2010 . I should also mention Arthur Russell 's outstanding Let's Go Swimming 12", which got reissued with a previously unreleased bonus track. As for this year's releases, these are some of our favorites: Holy Other : With U Laurel Halo : Hour Logic Maria Minerva : Sacred [...]
Here's the sequel to last year's popular heartbreak of a mixtape, Cruel Summer . That one was worn, forlorn, and sexual, it was the soundtrack arc to your winter romance burning up and melting in the hot, hormonal sun. This year it's just a party, really, soundtracked once again by some of the very best and most summery songs of the year. This 25 track tape is sequenced for feel and flow, grouped by sound and mood. There's hardcore via Fucked Up and Iceage, hip hop via Drake, Heems, and Giggs. The dance floor gets worked [...]

Beat experimentalist, Pale Sketcher , just recently released his Seventh Heaven EP , on Ghostly International . His post dubbed drone-stepping title track, 'Seventh Heaven', sends blissful soundscapes of lucid bass frequencies that swoon in every ounce of attention from it's listener. At least for me it did. Love this one. Purchase his whole EP HERE . Pale Sketcher - Seventh Heaven

Bibio's new album Mind Bokeh . look it up. (don't type it into google with mediafire .zip attached if you don't want the album) Pale Sketcher 's new Ep is beyond monetary value. Pale Sketcher - Seventh Heaven Paper cuts also an amazing album. Fading Parade . [...]

Bill Whitten of Grand Mal You know the drill by now. Here's a ton of music that most other sites would put up one-post-at-a-time, but you get it in one simple post. So many artists featured I would take more time to read them than scroll through them. Videos are below the track postings. The Dodos - "Don't Stop" Man/Miracle - "Don't Waste It" Agnes Obel - "Brother Sparrow" Ghost Animal - "Young And [...]

As hard as it is to believe, the fragmented bliss that is " Seventh Heaven " is made by the same merciless dude (Justin Broadrick) who unleashes both Napalm Death and Godflesh and Jesu onto an unsuspecting world. While I'm not entirely familiar with any of those bands, I know enough to understand that this stunning extended crescendo is as anomalous as it is great. Like Girl Unit's "Wut," a repetitive vocal sample rides the swell of an enormous beat under a blazing sun of synthesizers smile down on the proceedings. The swirling black hole on the single's cover is totally misleading: [...]

Mogwai : Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will ( Sub Pop ) This is the best Mogwai album I've heard in years. Sounds loose but still gigantic, and even delicate at times. Not too many bands can pull that off. They're also giving Morrissey a run for his money in the song titles department. Can't wait to see these lads melt the paint off the walls at the Mayan Theatre. [...]

The man who, in my eyes, will always be known as the brains behind Godflesh and Jesu (not to diminish the legacy of his countless other projects) has a new single out under his Pale Sketcher alias, entitled 'Seventh Heaven'. The track itself follows in a similar vein to Jesu; ambient soundscapes scattered with seemingly random synth lines that dance and stumble as if by accident. While that sounds like a dismissive, offhand remark, I actually meant it as a compliment - in my own cackhanded way. What I love about Justin Broadrick 's music is that [...]

Pale Sketcher (a.k.a. Jesu 's Justin K. Broadrick) has a follow up to last year's Jesu: Pale Sketches Demixed . The five-song Seventh Heaven EP is available now from Ghostly International . Along with four new songs, it also features a remix by King Midas Sound . Stream the whole EP on that Ghostly page , and here's that King Midas Sound remix of 'Wash it All Away': [ via ] Pale Sketcher
Jesu's Justin Broadrick has steadily been shifting huge swaths of sound into pop territory over the years, and we feel ridiculous for ever being surprised by that. Now, as Pale Sketcher, he's made the final jump. Adding drum thump over strained feedback on "Seventh Heaven" and letting his sometimes collaborator King Midas Sound aka The [...]

Last year was all about Summer . This year it was quite the opposite. So once again, instead of doing a songs-of-the-year list, our list focuses on what we picked up to be the dominant trend this year. Cos we're all about being hip and relevant. Here are some of our favorite weird dark gems and year round winter hits. Light Asylum – A Certain Person + Dark Allies Forest Swords – If Your Girl (Aaliyah cover) [...]

I've been posting a lot of hard-hitting house tracks lately, so I will slow it down a bit with some electronic masterpieces. Real chill, laid back, Sunday morning type shit. Enjoy yourself a bit with these. Cheers. -lev Can I Go Now (Gone Version) [Donnacha Costello Remix] - Pale Sketcher Every Love That Ever Was (Montauk's Vacation Mix) - Home Video

Blazing trails in music these days isn't just about coming up with something catchy or original. Right now, in the world of sonic words, it's all about how many responsibilities an artist can take on at once. If you're a great musician who can manage and produce all at the same time, even better! The industry has a job for you! Most of the time, though, artists who can pull off that kind of juggling act don't want to have anything to do with the tumor that is the corporate music world. Most want to be independent of [...]

Justin Broadwick is one of those guys whose music I wished I liked more. From Godflesh’s industrial noise right through to Jesu’s decidedly metallic take on shoegaze, he’s always made music close to my taste... but not quite. Thus it’s pleasing to finally find something from the man who reportedly turned down the opportunity to join Faith No More that I can actively enjoy as opposed to passively respect. The genius of Pale Sketcher lies in Jesu - specifically in a limited edition album of remixes released last year. 'Can I Go Now (Gone Version)', [...]
Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. [tweetmeme] In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler offers a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes. The Salteens "If Love Is Gone Where Do We Go from Here" from Grey Eyes [ to be [...]

[ Ghostly International ] ( buy mp3s ) Most electronic music lovers are probably not familiar with the work of Justin Broadrick under his older incarnations as the guitarist for one of Birmingham's heaviest metal groups, Napalm Death or his own band Godflesh. Over the years Broadrick's work has become increasingly focused on drone and shoegaze, leading him to completely forego the guitars for his most recent project and fix his attention on the synths. This release comes from the remix album of an earlier work as Jesu, the album titled [...]
