I first saw Palomar a couple years back when they opened for The Wrens at their two-night 20th anniversary throwdown in NJ at Maxwells. Comprised of three woman and a guy drummer, they played great kick ass songs with running streams of power pop and folk, and harmonic melodies that wrap around you and hold you tight. Since their inception in 1998, Palomar has released four full-lengths and one EP. Sense & Antisense , their fifth full-length, contains contributions by the likes of [...]

Clinton Hill, Brooklyn four-piece Palomar have returned with a gripping new batch of excellent tracks laced with gorgeous female fronted vocals. Their new album jumps out of the gates this January 24th with the leadoff track 'Wouldn't Release You' from their upcoming fifth new album 'Sense and Antisense' - featured here today. The album was produced in Brooklyn by Phil Palazzolo (The New Pornographers' Together and Ted Leo's The Brutalist Bricks) at Seaside Lounge. Contributing to the album are local stars Charles Bissell of the Wrens (guitarist/vocalist Rachel's husband), Roman Kuebler of the late Oranges Band, and Jed [...]

Italienska psych-duon Dumbo Gets Mad , som i december följer upp debutalbumet Elephants at the door med en helt ny singel plus video, har gjort ett en timmes långt mixtape fullproppat med fantastisk och i de flesta fallen oidentifierad (det finns med andra ord ingen låtlista tillgänglig) old school-romantik. Så här säger de själva om det: This mixtape pictures a DGM's journey in deep space! Along the way colours, dances, unusual feelings melt together with encounters of travel companions such as Venice and Cècile. Get stoned [...]

Long before the Beatles kicked off "She Loves You" with a now-famous count, Lawrence Welk was doing it with "a-one and a-two." A lot of musicians do a count at the beginning of a song, but that isn't necessarily the part of a song you recall. That made finding a contribution for this week's Contrast Podcast #184 theme a bit tricky, and it's bound to lead to a fine mix. The songs I considered were all so beautiful that choosing one was difficult, so I am posting them all here. My choice for [...]
Monday: The Virgins, The Beets, Animal Collective (DJ set) @ Santo's Party House 7pm $20 If you weren't able to make it out for any of Animal Collective's shows at Prospect Park this weekend then you should definitely make a point of going and dancing with the band as the spin records. At least that way you get some Animal Collective in your life and with The Beets and The Virgins playing too it should almost be worth spending $20 on. The Virgins - "Rich Girls" [...]

Day two of Northside featured some show-hopping – well, a little bit of show-hopping. My main focus that evening was EarFarm 's showcase at Spike Hill , although I had my eye on a few other shows, too. Unfortunately, my notes on this night are rather meager, so you're going to have to enjoy all the pretty pictures instead. Before the festival started, members of Coyote Eyes contacted me and sent along some songs, which is a generally lovely thing to do, and so I looked forward to seeing them live. Alas, [...]

Here are some of my shitty photos from the Pop Tarts Suck Toasted Showcase that was part of the first Northside Fest : Screaming Females Eula Sisters Palomar Dinowalrus [...]

At some point during the booking of this show the good folks at Absolutely Kosher reached to see if I would like Palomar to be part of it. My immediate reaction was "Hell yeah!" and so Palomar was added to the bill. It was basically a coup to have a band as experienced and enjoyed as Palomar at a small venue like Public Assembly and they absolutely filled the steamy backroom to the gills for their set. And what a set it was! Filled with the band's brilliant songs both new and old, Palomar absolutely ruled the [...]

What : Pop Tarts Suck Toasted's Northside Fest Showcase When : Tonight, 8pm! Where : Public Assembly , 70 N. 6th St. Cost : $10 What to Expect : With 12-bands on two stages this is simply the most bang for your buck throughout the entire Northside Festival. Not only is it big in terms of numbers it's big in bands as well with some true up-and-coming acts like Screaming Females, Dinowalrus, and Kilgore Trout Is Dead all getting time on the stages. Of course I've made [...]
