PortlandtownUSA by Pancake Breakfast Our city's most festive collective, Pancake Breakfast , has a new single for this young, new year, and hey! It's about the city where you live! "PortlandtownUSA" (my spellcheck does not recognize "PortlandtownUSA" as a word—however, my spellcheck also does not recognize the word "spellcheck") is a one-off from Mike Midlo and the Pancakers. ("Pancakers" too? Jesus, spellcheck.) After a hymn-like intro, it turns into a rowdy boot-stomper with folk, country, and mariachi influences. True to the nature of its Portland subject, clouds and rain play [...]

One of the advantages of having a blog like this is being able to make up the rules as you go along, and today that means giving the limelight to our youngest Joe, who reaches the ripe old age of seven today. Now, we are all guilty of bias and of nepotism at times (and this is one of them), but I think you'd be hard pressed to find another seven year old with music tastes as good as his. From age five he chose to go to sleep to the soothing strains of Mclusky loudly singing along, [...]
Between 2/26 and March 7, two Narcs were out vacationing working on a piece on Portland's and San Francisco's music scene. This first of three parts finds our young adventurers wandering the bearded streets of Portland in search of a venue with spellbinding sound. There are many thing that a Philadelphian will find familiar about Portland. The beer scene. The unpretentious vibe. The bikes. The universal signposts of hipster culture, the universal denial of said hipster culture. That choosing a spot for jazz [...]

Now that we've had the top tens from all the Mad Mackerel contributors, we will give you a definitive overall top ten in a couple of days. Before that is our penultimate top ten list of the year - the favourite new bands and artists that have come our way in 2010 which was perhaps the hardest list of all to compile. So with honourable mentions to Gaoler's Daughter , White Noise Movement, Pop. 1280 and White Dress , here we have our favourites. Hopefully we'll see a lot more of them all in [...]

Here at MM we share, chat, argue, bury and praise music on a pretty regular basis…like daily. So throughout the year, the Mackerel crew (Mrs Mackerel, Barry-Sean, Christy-Popper, Dr Roddy, Polly Pocket, Starbar, MM and others) keep their own ever-changing top tens ready for publication at the climax of the festive season. So last, but very much not least, is the lovely (though flu-stricken) Mrs Mackerel and her choices for 2010. We all sweat a little over our top tens and I don't know why really. This is just what I think, you will undoubtedly think [...]

Now is the time to reveal all... Our third contribution this year comes from the mighty Dr Roddy, house-mate, chef, Leeds fan, and occasional soiler of his own trousers. 10. I love this. I love this song and I love this video. I especially love the "magic car" segments, and the footage of Pancake Breakfast frontman Mike Midlo ghost riding the whip. Way to work within a budget and make it look good, Team Pancake! Somehow the video, directed by Sean Hutchinson, seems extra-appropriate because how Leonard Cohen plays Portland tonight. This particular Pancake Breakfast tune is one of the more Cohen-y efforts from new self-titled PB disc, an album the band says it will make 11 videos for, in all. "Trouble" is the third of 11. It [...]
Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. [tweetmeme] In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler offers a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes. You might call Portland, OR ensemble Pancake Breakfast a critic's nightmare, due to the fact that they're almost impossible to categorize, but then, that same indescribability it what makes their music so intriguing. Over the course of their dizzyingly eclectic self-titled album, this nine-piece band covers a lot of ground. There's the Mexican-tinged mariachi-pop of "A Balloon in the Sky," giddy playground chanting over junkyard percussion on "Hoot Hot Damn! I Got a Job of Work," and slow-moving, stoner-rock slabs of thick, sludgy guitar leading into a Western cowboy vibe on "Jakebrake/Peterbilt," and that's just part of the story. By [...]

Pancake Breakfast gave us the ridiculously catchy (and current Mackerel family fave) The Ballad Of Maynard Noe recently. It comes from their new self-titled album, and the band have now embarked on a plan to release a video for each of the eleven tracks on the album. So, first up is the marvellous Pedro Infante . Watch it below in all its monochrome beauty. Buy the album from cdbaby here . Download [...]

[ via ] Another week, another mix. Have no idea how long I'll keep this up - probably until it doesn't make me smile anymore. Fujiya & Miyagi are back! Fujiya & Miyagi are back! I mean, I'd probably post this even if it was kinda bats just because it's new Fujiya & Miyagi, so luckily it's good. 1. Fujiya & Miyagi - Sixteen Shades Of Black and Blue [...]

Portland, Oregon's Pancake Breakfast to release a hootenanny of a debut record, revealing an exploration into baroque-pop truck stop goodness - OCTOBER 19th! Times are hard. Folks want to see and hear something that makes them feel better, or at least different. Pancake Breakfast is attempting to do just that. The nine, hardworking Northwesterners hailing from Portland, OR, have played memorable sets at festivals like Portland's Pick-a-thon and the Sisters Folk Festival to local house shows, bar gigs and campfire hootenannies with one goal: to send people home from their shows with a song in their head [...]

After a brief foray in MM's territory, recommending Kurran & The Wolfnotes' Your Four Limbs , and enjoying HUGELY the Pancake Breakfast track, The Ballad of Maynard Noe (and let's face it, who doesn't enjoy a pancake breakfast?), it's back to Friday business. For some unfathomable reason, I was thinking about Level 42 this week (in my defence, only once and rather briefly). It could have been to do with the quiz MM and I were putting together for tonight, in downtown Charlbury. Decades ago, when young and foolish, [...]
