And so the weekend ends where it once began . All Friday early eve optimism exchanged for that dull numb Sunday and its ensuing imminent-return-to-mundanity vibe signals, we've some supernal entity to thank for Animal Collective being about these European longitudes and latitudes right around now. Spiritually, we're back in Baltimore although impatiently awaiting beneath a set of inflatable dentures, it almost feels like a 'Stones show is upon us. No such unluck. Mick & co. could no longer comport themselves as do Paw Tracks duo Prince Rama [...]

We are so excited! The avantgarde-experimental-pop quartet Animal Collective are finally back to Berlin to play a show at Astra (near Warschauerstrasse), November 18th. They are probably bringing their crazy live light show + stage buildings (huge teeth & colored spikes) and Brookyln-based artist trio Prince Rama will support. Check out their amazing 20 minute- long video '15 [...]

Lord Huron isn't a new name at TWJ, but they are new as certain additions to my top albums/songs of the year. They released three solid EPs in the past few years, but Lonesome Dreams, is on another level. Think about about Fleet foxes, Band of Horses, and Panda Bear mixed up with an authentic sound that [...]

Finding a foothold from which to begin with Talk Banana is a bit like deciding from which Liars recording to commence the odyssey that is the Antipodean nudniks' discography. It's here as tricky within the context of one solitary song as it is to correctly enunciate its very title. For ¶ ► ♠ Œ∆³ª¨√♦§° ± is more a synopsis of contemporary musical culture than it is a conventional song, per se. Beginning with the now and worming its way back into times of retrospection, John Murphy eases us in with some soft celestial ambience – something of a [...]

Can't say I really get all the dingbat etiquettes of the internet, although far more comprehensible is this dreampop reverie from Zooey . Not Deschanel, but Montréal's Matthew Otto. The patent comparison would be with Noah Lennox, yet there's more to 回回 (yeah, me neither) than first meets the ear. For caught up in its propulsive whooshes of synth are processed, if still perceptibly human vocals, which in turn flow into the sprightly electropop undertow of the track. An optimum cosmic plod, and one that remains connected to our unintelligible earthly etiquettes as it and Otto drift [...]

We all know what our favorite musicians are like on stage — whether they're shy or flamboyant, whether they're chatty or businesslike, whether they're funny or taciturn. But we also know that what we're seeing on stage is ultimately a performance. Off stage, however, it's a completely different matter, and thus backstage photography has always provided an interesting insight into the music world, particularly when the photos in question aren't posed or contrived. After the jump, we've pulled together a collection of such photos, images that seem to capture sides to performers that we rarely get to see, giving a [...]

Six producers worth their salt is a weekly column which features six relevant, up-and-coming, under-exposed, or disruptively innovative musicians in a particular genre-space. Every Friday we’ll put together a list of a half-dozen must-listen artists that are – or we expect to be – making waves in the coming months. Everybody loves pop music. As human beings, we are instinctively drawn to catchy hooks. I can't say I've ever met someone in my life who does not enjoy a good pop song (anyone who says they do not is either lying or an alien). Thus, the [...]

Animal Collective - Centipede Hz By Russell Warfield Even as I heard Merriweather Post Pavilion for the first time (and we all, if you’ll pardon the expression, remember our first time) I was already wondering what Animal Collective were going to do next. Animal Collective are a notoriously restless bunch, who take two steps sideways for every three steps forwards. And what’s all the more exhilarating – up until this point in their career anyway – is how it becomes harder and harder to envision where [...]

Another Animal Collective record, another recorded live set teasing new material (remember the first time we heard "What Would I Want? Sky" following the release of Merriweather Post Pavilion ?) - this time it's "Crimson," which the band have apparently been playing live for a while, but has never seen studio attention. Let's hope for a castoff EP soon; you can still find Centipede HZ 's broken-toy, abandoned-carnival staggering pulse in "Crimson," but, as in Animal Collective's best songs, dudes surprise you toward the song's latter half with some very unexpected poppy [...]

As with all forms of experimentation, every Animal Collective endeavour feels a case study of various successes and failures; of trial and error. For every Merriweather Post Pavilion there's a Fall Be Kind ; for every Leaf House a Pride And Fight. Thus the overriding sensation with their every effort concerns how capable Maryland's most noteworthy contemporary musicologists are of achieving a balance between the direct and the directionless. With ninth studio LP Centipede Hz , equilibrium isn't exactly achieved, although unquestionably some monumental feats of listenability are accomplished. [...]
Hey, wanna hear a new Animal Collective song? And I don't mean a new track off their just released album, Centipede Hz. The band appeared on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" today, and they performed a new song, "Crimson". Listen to it below. Animal Collective 2012 Tour Dates: 09/18 – Seattle, WA [...]
With Centipede Hz, experimental music outfit Animal Collective is following its poppiest album, 20092s Merriweather Post Pavilion , with one of its most hectic. WATCH THE REVIEW
This album is full of fun oddities. Akin to the effects of strobe lights on your ocular senses, it is an in-your-face sound blitz on ones audible capacity.
