A new location and a weekday start lent the 2013 Jubilee a different feel than previous years, but emerging bands still shone.

You can't take yourself too seriously when you're having a rad time. Los Angeles garage rockers Pangea look and sound like they could throw an awesome party. Pangea rocked the first day crowd at Jubilee fest in downtown's arts district with a set of catchy fuzzed out tracks including "Night of the Living Dummy" and "Too Drunk to Cum". Other highlights were the fast paced punk-inspired "River" from The Killer Dreams EP released last year and even when they slowed things down with a screechy cover of The Ronnette's "Be My Baby", the crowd kept [...]

The opener of the Jubilee Music & Arts Festival might have been light on the crowds, but there was no shortage of energy from the performers. Kitten [top photo], Trash Talk, the Black Lips and Obliterations peeled what was left of the paint off the the downtown warehouse complex that hosted the venue, and whether it roared or purred, the music was top-notch throughout the day. Here is our report from Day 1 . Above, highlights from photographer Carl Pocket . After the jump, there's more :

For all its promotional heft, the reinvented, relocated Jubilee Music & Arts Festival on Friday felt like Introduction to Concert-Going. That owed mostly to the crowd, which was not only alarmingly sparse but very young. Rosy-cheeked fans moved in gaggles, bouncing to music from peers such as teenaged quartet Cherry Glazerr , moshing to rough-and-tumble rockers Pangea and huddling against walls to save enough energy to thrash later to Trash Talk and the Black Lips . Thanks to the setting — a maze of distressed, graffiti-stained, once-industrial buildings in the [...]

"What if Ty Segall were to come out tonight?" asked a fan in the sold-out Echo on Friday night. This was seconds before someone rammed into his body and pulled him into the mosh pit. His possible scenario didn't have to come into fruition because the bombastic bill of Mikal Cronin , Pangea and Gap Dream didn't give anybody much time to think. There were only two choices: Move along with the music or have someone else accidentally knock a beer out of your hand for taking the night too seriously. [...]

Everybody who heard the soulful first volleys from Jillian Banks — doing business simply as Banks — figured there'd be more good things to come from the L.A.-based songstress. Indeed, Banks' second single, " Warm Water," arrived this week with a tingle, and with production courtesy of U.K producer Orlando Higginbottom, aka Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs . The bulletin, though, is that after an early alliance with IAMSOUND Records, Banks has been scooped up by Capitol-affiliated label Harvest Records , which once upon a time released an album called "Dark Side of the [...]
Remember The Scene ? Sure you do. It was that absolutely awesomesauce free gig at Blue Frog, Mumbai last month that featured the likes of The Lightyears Explode , Big City Harmonics and Skrat . Hell, we even released a zine about it with interviews and stories. The first in the monthly series was a huge success and it's back for the month of May. Version 2.o of NH7.in and Blue Frog's The Scene will take place on May 29 at Blue Frog, Mumbai, and once again, it won't cost you a dime! [...]

Pangea is a garage rock band that is based in Los Angeles. The released their debut LP Living Dummy last year via Burger Records. Catch Pangea playing a new tune that has that decidedly Violent Femmes-y spunk to it below. There's a pretty grand little freak out at the end that crystallizes the pretty simple, but well written words. Though Pangea does have some hardcore bedfellows, their energy is far more vulnerable and intimate. Thus the songs play less as party rock and more as bothered garage pop. It's really easy to enjoy, relate-able music. And if it isn't [...]

My eyes were open for a full five minutes before I closed them again, and suddenly 10:30 a.m. became 2 p.m. Goddam it. In what seemed like the literal blink of an eye, a dozen wonderful Friday performances became impossible to get to, everything from Shannon and the Clams at Barbarella, to Useless Eaters/Surgeons/Shark Toys/Peach Kelli Pop/Guantanamo Baywatch at the Cherrywood, to fucking Billy Bragg at Waterloo Records! Oh my god, how could I have missed Billy Bragg?!? This being SXSW, he no doubt played a jam-packed but intimate show, [...]
