Monday? Innately awful. New BRAIDS ? Ineffably brilliant. They've no need to make Amends for anything in particular, not least as the ringleader of the Montréal troupe Raphaelle Standell-Preston already has our album of the year thus far under her belt in the inscrutably excellent form of Blue Hawaii sophomore, Untogether . It's an endeavour which has by now quite evidently had a not insubstantial impact upon her more widely renowned, and with that revered escapades alongside the blokes of BRAIDS, and I say blokes as opposed to guys as they've recently parted ways with [...]
Whenever I wonder of Hotflush Recordings , I think to the robotically articulated tag plastered across the promo version I once had of Mount Kimbie's to this day amazing Crooks & Lovers LP of 2010 when really, I ought to recur to consummately bass-hefty house. These are things I know relatively little of, truth be known – I know what I like, and I like what I know ; I love Sónar. But other than that, I've only an elementary cognition of the unending permutations of dance music. Though as two of [...]
A lot of people have recommended the Body & Soul festival to me in the past, but I've somehow conspired to never get there. This year could be too difficult to resist though. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds! Kurt Vile! Pantha Du Prince! Solange! Took me a while to [Read more]
Could hope be said to only incur pain? Granted, it's rarely fulfilled as we'd so optimistically wish for it to be, but I'd counter that only the hopeless know true pain. And Hope Only Brings Pain certainly makes for a discombobulating title to slap on the sophomore recording from Barcelona pairing, The Suicide of Western Culture . Their native city itself is one that, to the visiting alien, reeks of a painfully transparent positivity: it's bathed in luminescence for at least six months of the year; sits beside the seaside; and boasts two of mainland Europe's most [...]

There's something of a drastic lack of fun, and with it frivolity innately located within contemporary hip hop which, when you gaze back retrospectively over the genre's mischievous previous, is ever so slightly disheartening. Though reinserting some of that same impishness of yore is Vancouver's Blac Hollywood , aka Cephas Munga, whose freebie Kids With Crowns EP pairs up a more elate and electronica-flecked take on the so-called chillwave of Toro Y Moi et al. with that same playfulness to have propelled Edinburgh's Young Fathers to a starker prominence in recent times. All nifty scratches [...]

The electronic producer’s latest affair is a minimal and instrument-laden side project with the Norwegian bell group.
Nearly three years removed from Pantha du Prince' s Rough Trade debut LP, Black Noise, the German producer's studio has grown to include a three-ton electronic carillon comprised of 50 bronze bells - a massive instrument that has also created an impedance for his sonic experimentation in fusing the tempos and textures of minimal techno with the beauty of organic soundscapes. Originally written as one movement by Pantha du Prince (né Hendrick Weber), the producer enlisted Norwegian composer Lars Petter Hagen to arrange Elements of Light for the many Oslo-based musicians who would eventually take [...]

Pantha Du Prince , a German-based beat producer, has been releasing music for over a decade now so his interest in adding a group of bell musicians and naming them The Bell Laboratory speaks to his desire to think outside the box more than anything. Their original collaboration started in 2011, meaning Elements of Light has been a project for some time and the result is sonically delicate and robust. Throughout the forty-five minute album, Elements of Light feels [...]

Over the course of three albums, Hendrik Weber has honed his minimal techno sounds in such a way to ensure that his alter ego, Pantha du Prince is one of the most important names in dance music today. From the intensity of debut album Diamond Daze , through the more laid-back explorations of This Bliss to 2010’s Black Noise , a record of electronic music that explored nature and science in a way that very few releases in the genre had [...]

Pantha Du Prince & The Bell Laboratory - Elements of Light Rough Trade: 2013 It is somewhat unfortunate that the bell has become so inextricably linked with death. A victim of its own far-reaching power, death bells became an ominous town crier. John Donne did it no favors. Even the steady ringing of clock towers can be seen as a sort of audible hourglass on our own existence. So perhaps it is no surprise that we often forget how beautiful bells can be. Consider a joyous wedding, the satisfying page for an absent hotel clerk, or [...]
It's not surprising Pantha Du Prince is the last man standing from Dial's seminal decade long run of downer house which gave us the likes of Lawrence's The Absence of Blight , Efdemin's 2007 self-titled, and, yep, Pantha Du Prince's This Bliss . But it wasn't until that latter record's follow up, Black Noise , released on Rough Trade in 2010, that the German producer truly had his cross over moment. The factors are numerous and debatable, but Hendrik Weber's glassy and intricate minimal techno sound sculptures were some of the most inviting and singular in all [...]

Elements of Light , the latest from German techno mainstay Pantha du Prince (Hendrik Weber) is out today. It’s a collaboration between Weber and a collection of bell musicians being credited here as “The Bell Laboratory.” Read any review of the album-it’s already gotten its fair share of them-and you’ll find the carillon, an instrument at the album’s center, described and almost fetishized. And, weighing in at three metric tons, it’s certainly not the most expected instrument to hear on any techno track. But the attention being given to the carillon, along with the fact [...]
