MP3: PANTHERS "Goblin City" ( Vice ) Brooklyn's Panthers are the type of band who wants their screeching guitars to leave skid marks on your stereo. So those looking for a punk-inspired testosterone infusion need not look much further than the band upcoming release The Trick , which thrashes its way to music stores on April 10. ![Panthers Rep Goblin City, Rock Out Like Crazy [MP3]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/411896_lg.jpg)
[PHOTO CREDIT: "KATE"] You like Black Sabbath ? Fu Manchu ? Then you are going to dig this a lot. A couple months back the nice folks at Vice sent along a virtual promo of Panthers ' ( no, not Panther ) forthcoming set The Trick . After a couple listens we emailed back and said, hey, this is a hot record, can we post the tune "Goblin City," because it rocks like crazy. Vice said something along the lines of "all in due time, rock fan, all in due time." Well, that time has come. [...]

So Friday night I went to the album release show for Panther and Copy at Holocene, though I'm not entirely sure it was their album release show as it was billed, because this seems to assert they've already had one before. E*Rock , co-founder of Fryk Beat (home to Panther) and Audio Dregs (home to Copy) opened the show. he had a mic up there with him, but he barely used it [...]

If you guys are burnt out on running to 45:33 by LCD Soundsystem, I was using this cool mac program the other day called Tangerine . It analyzes the BPM of songs in your iTunes library and allows you to create random smart playlists based on BPM and beat intensity. Here's one I ran to yesterday. It clocks in at 39:42. 01. The Wrens - I've Made Enough Friends 02. TV On The Radio - Wolf Like Me 03. Whitest Boy Alive - Burning 04. [...]

Panther - How Well Can You Swim? Amazing. Can you imagine a world where this song by Portland Oregon's Panther could be our pop music? Imagine this song on the radio, popular with the kids... Electro beats, busted up soul singing, insane synthesizers burping and farting. It is what I call 'totally excellent'. Panther is Charlie Salas-Humara. Lately, he has showed up on MTV2 with a nomination for "Video of the Year" and in Spin Magazine. Not at all bad for someone whose live show, I hear, includes a great amount of "floor dancing" - have a look at...
You know him as the consummate breakdancer in The Thermals' "Pillar Of Salt" video, but Charlie Salas-Humara (aka Panther) is a one man sonic wrecking crew in his own right, crafting a "mutant" strain of pop that fuses strained falsetto...

So there's been some changes around here at Macktronic. The focus and design have slowly been evolving, and probably will continue to do so throughout the history of this project. One offshoot of the endeavor is that I've decided to put my money where my mouth is, so to speak, and start a record label...... Gold Robot Records . The focus of GRR is small run vinyl releases with a focus on independent musicians, artists, printmakers, and designers. It's a non-profit project, with all proceeds going to the making of the next release. [...]

Charlie Salas-Humar, aka Panther , is an entertainment machine. At least that's the impression I get from listening to his music and watching clips of his shows online. Having recently played a series of dates opening for Ratatat , he definitely has people talking. I haven't been to a Panther show (living in a remote outpost of the music world has some obvious disadvantages), but I bet they are fun. I also bet they are pretty polarizing. This one-man act, with his drum machine beats and falsetto vocals, has a sound that will [...]
Yes, it's Panther , not Panthers ... We'll be honest, until Panther mastermind Charlie Salas-Humara blurted an obscenity (pretty much the most obscene one, if you're curious, so don't play this video at work if that is the sort of thing that will ruffle feathers) at 1:29 into this video, we weren't sure it was for us. But as soon as the dirty word is uttered the manic vocal and the killer minimalist electro groove (think James Brown-grade funk in the year 2419A.D., Buck Rogers-stizz) suddenly come into focus. After feeling that, we watched "You Don't [...]

Here's the first extrawack! Baker's Dozen Downloads of the new year...as usual, these are thirteen tracks we think you need to have on the personal listening device of your choice, and to maybe even hold up said device with the backlight on so that the people around you on the train or in the pizza joint can see how au courant you really are. The Icicles - "Sugar Sweet" mp3 Buildings Breeding - "Stacking Up Reasons" mp3 [...]
This rock block is all about chi. I tell you what, those Asian dudes, sure got it right when they talk about keeping balance in your life. Earlier this week, I dropped a Not Rock Block, and ever since that day I've been plagued by headaches. Coincidence, you say? No way. It's bad chi. Let's take care of that chi, and that pain in my head, with some good old-fashioned rock and roll music. I can't think of a better way to kick of a rock block then with the newest single [...]
Here are some friday favorites to keep you going through the weekend, - enjoy! Read Yellow - Pia Zadora - from labelsite Los Campesinos! - you me dancing - from myspace (fantastic band, love them!) Pela - lonesome hearts (cassette won't listen remix) - from labelsite Wolfkin - these are all illusions - from bandsite (Denmark) Panthers - uncertainly - from labelsite Field music - sit tight

Obvious Justin Timberlake comparisons aside, we suspected that Panther would sound better in the studio than on stage. Not that we don't admire the thing he does live , but... he actually sounds impressive on his new album, Secret Lawns . Of course, Panther still rides dangerously close to being a joke, but if his act ends up falling that way, at least there is some meat to it all. Panther - "How Well Can You Swim" (mp3) Secret Lawns [...]
