Last night was our second DJing experience, and it was rather a contrast to the first time around. It was all rather last minute, meaning I didn't have five weeks to fret about song choices. It was in a coffee shop instead of a bar with a dance floor, and given the rain and other factors, there wasn't exactly a big turnout. Didn't matter though as I still ended up enjoying myself immensely. Here's what I played: 1. Herman Düne - Tell Me Something I Don't Know 2. Belle & Sebastian - Your Cover's [...]
For myself, one of the sadder bits of news in 2010 was the apparent breakup of Boston's Pants Yell! last April. The band released some absolutely stellar pop records, and came around the time where I was truly discovering that kind of unique sound which was culled from 80s/90s indiepop. After playing their final shows last May, one would hope we would be hearing something soon on the future endeavors of the members. Luckily, we didn't have to wait that long to find out. Towards the end of last year, former PY! frontman Andrew Churchman returned [...]

Hey, look, three new songs (O.K., demos) from CUFFS, the new band of two-thirds of Pants Yell! They're a little muddier than the crisper-than-autumn-air last Pants Yell! record (because, lo-fi lusters, they are demos ) but the songs themselves are bold and bright and great. CUFFS - "Privilege" : mp3 CUFFS - "Albert Kroff" (which I posted previously as "Albert Cross") : mp3 CUFFS - "You Can Come True": mp3 Keep an eye on the [...]
The end of Pants Yell! was a pretty sad thing for me. Their songs entered my life right around the time I started college and followed me all the way through until the year I graduated. Andrew's words have always meant a lot to me and I guess it's because I feel like I can relate to them so well. If I was going through a bad time, there was a Pants Yell! song to complement my woes . If I was feeling good, that bright picking was always there to accompany my happiness. So, as you can see, [...]

With twee heroes Pants Yell! defunct after having played their last shows in May, frontman Andrew Churchman already has plans for his next band. "[It's a] continental European pop band… just up the ante a bit and be a little more mature," he told the Phoning It In podcast on May 8, comparing the new group to Prefab Sprout. He's also playing drums in New Jersey's Fluffy Lumbers, an act associated with Underwater Peoples, as well as a pair of other collaborations. "We're working on this collaboration of really cryptic Sonic Youth [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News There was a neat symmetry to the second night of NYC Popfest 2010 , a four-day summit of U.S. and European fuzz-and-jangle bands. The festival is being staged at venues across Manhattan and Brooklyn and Friday night, the scene was the SoHo dive Don Hill's, where one band said, "Goodbye, sort of" and another said, "Hello, again." The group bidding farewell, at least to New York City, was the trio Pants Yell , which officially ends its seven-year run Sunday with a [...]

Sometimes there are bands that you discover too late, and one of them for me is Pants Yell! Last years Received Pronunciation was undoubtedly good from the very first listen (check out my review of the album here ), but I had no idea the long lasting effects this album would have on me. I find myself returning to it's sweet undistorted guitar driven pop over and over again, and the disc itself has been lodged in the cd player of my car since I got it(the car is [...]
Chalk up another one . Boston indie pop trio Pants Yell! is calling it quits after seven years together. Frontman Andrew Churchman calls it a "self imposed expiration date" instead of a breakup, but in any case, the band's last show is scheduled for May 24th in Cambridge. Churchman wrote the following on the band's blog : To me, pants yell represents something very special and precious and I want to keep that magic intact. I'm no longer the 23 year old singing 'Evan's Way'. I want [...]

Photo by David Greenwald Rawkblog twee favorites Pants Yell! are calling it a day, wrapping up a four-album career with three East Coast shows in May, frontman Andrew Churchman announced on Facebook today. After the band's incendiary slot at the Slumberland 20th Anniversary show at the Echo last month, he told me that it wouldn't be an end for his music-making - just the band name, and its accompanying musical expectations. Nevertheless, these are gigs you won't want to miss. Details on Facebook . Pants Yell! - "Cold Hands": [...]

As I mentioned in my list of favorite full-lengths released last year, there were so many that came from bands based here in the Boston-area that I thought I'd spotlight them in their very own post. To be completely clear, though: This is far from some lesser-category of local releases, but a list of 10 albums that sit proudly alongside my other favorite 20 - the fact that they originate from

Like the evenly cooked oatmeal in "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," so many things about Pants Yell!'s Received Pronunciation are just right . The guitars jangle along the edge of fuzz but not to the point of stylization; the vocals are sincere and dorky but not without confidence (at one point, singer Andrew Churchman sings, "Your boy friend's an asshole," and on "Not Wrong," drops the line "You had the gall to tell me I'm wrong / but I'm not wrong"); and the performances are joyfully loose even as the songcraft is sewn tight with care. Despite [...]
