Listen to The Chieftains Celebrate Their 50th Anniversary with The Decemberists on a Cover of Bob Dylan's 'When The Ship Comes In'.
Owl Mag writer Katie Carroll can't help but cringe a bit at her high school soundtrack, but it's perfect for an indie-pop dance party.

Celtic music mainstays The Chieftains - who you may be most familiar with via their Sinead O'Connor collaboration "The Foggy Dew" - turn 50-years old in 2012. As an issued press release reports, the band is celebrating with a new studio album featuring collaborations with "like-minded musical visionaries and kindred spirits." Titled Voice of Ages, the record features contributions from Bon Iver, The Decemberists, Paolo Nutini, Imelda May, The Low Anthem, The Secret Sisters, and Lisa Hannigan, among others. In addition, T-Bone Burnett served as producer alongside The Chieftains' Paddy Moloney. Voice of [...]

STV have come in for some massively unfair stick in the past, but they have come back fighting this week with one of the funniest pieces I've seen in ages. This week they published a list of nominations for the best Scottish songs of the noughties, to be voted for by viewers, with the intention of eventually whittling the numbers down to select 'Scotland's Greatest Ever Album'. And it is hilarious . The list of nominated songs for the last ten years or so is absolutely brilliant. I can't tell if it's the best satire [...]

Quick hint, Q - if you're looking to mark a quarter century of taste and discernment, this... ... might not be the way to flag that message. -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch
Rising upstart Murray James is set to release his awaited debut Lp in 2012, until then the singer/songwriter is releasing an Ep on October 9th. Visuals for the first single 'Protect Me' are above. Quite sure you'll be hearing more of this talent within the coming months.

Among the contributors are David Gray, Paolo Nutini, Beck, Swell Season, and Robert Smith. In the late '60s, the late British guitarist and songwriter John Martyn broke ground by leaping from acoustic folk into highly successful experiments with tape delay, wild recording scenarios, and jazz-inspired arrangements. He became a cult figure among British musicians. A list of his admirers reads like a who's-who of rock, pop, and even trip hop: Eric Clapton, The Band's Levon Helm, Lee "Scratch" Perry, The Cure's Robert Smith, Beck, Morcheeba. To honor his life, thirty artists reveal the full breadth of Martyn's creativity [...]

Little Green Cars - Heineken Green Spheres Stage Little Green Cars were named as one of State's 'Faces of 2011', and for very good reason. The young six-piece kick of Saturday's proceedings on the Heineken Green Spheres Stage with an impressively polished performance. Little Green Cars have the kind of raw talent that is genuinely exciting – their musicianship is top notch, their vocals – in particular, those brilliant harmonies – are incredibly tight, and their songs are festival anthems in the making. The band's debut single on UK label Young and Lost Club, 'The John Wayne', is [...]
Saturday's opener were the Gaslight Anthem who, while only having played Pilton Farm once before, made one hell of an impression when they did. None other than The Boss himself joined the New Jersey boys on stage to power through their anthem 'The 59 Sound' before he hit the Pyramid Stage to headline 2 years ago. The Gaslight Anthem this time around were gracing the Pyramid Stage and at first they looked like they were a little overawed by it all. Who can blame them when you have upwards of 10,000 people [...]

Here's a brand new name to Rarities : Pete Lawrie is a singer-songwriter hailing from Wales, who recently released his debut album A Little Brighter through Island Records. With a great selection of songs and a sound that he himself describes as "Southern blues country rock skiffle hop tronica", this guy is definitely one to keep an eye on in 2011. Born on Penny Lane in Liverpool to a mother who plays oboe in the opera and a father who makes parts for wind instruments, [...]

The news is a-buzzin' that one of Loft9652s favorites is in the studio laying some new tracks for her sophomore album. The singer who produced Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful? has everyone waiting for the sophomore. We loved that record, but we are more in love with Paloma Faith 's visual image. We look forward to the new project and hope to see it by the end of the year. Filed under: Beats , Brit Brit Brit Tagged: art , Graham Coxon , [...]
Five Good Covers presents five cross-genre reinterpretations of an oft-covered song. Every band likes to end gigs with their biggest song. Arcade Fire must have a hard time drafting a set list, since every one of their songs is massive, but for a long time they've been sending off fans with the truly epic "Wake Up." It's a grand, soaring song that really requires the dedication of all eight Arcade Fire members. However, it's also such a gem that other artists can't help but try to take it on, though most of them tone it down to a more manageable [...]

Do you have a band that somehow changed your perception of music? I remember falling off the face of popular music in middle school after discovering last.fm . I don't really know how things happened, but I got sucked into the vortex of independent music more quickly than I would have thought possible. I'm not proud of some of my origins- I started with Oasis , moved to Muse , swung to Paolo Nutini ... I made a quick pass by Mika (yeah, I was that guy). From there, things started to get really [...]
