R eally, I hope the weather stays this nice for Lollapalooza. It is seriously 75 degrees with low humidity, a nice breeze, and only little white puffy clouds in the sky. What a lovely day and HBD2ME. For more Lollapalooza listening, check out parts one , two , three , four , five , and six of this series as well. MP3 | My Morning Jacket - Wordless Chorus (Live) MP3 [...]

On a day when one old coot got fired, another died. Kurt Vonnegut was the German-American writer of Cat's Cradle , a book about the end of the world by ice, and Slaughterhouse-Five , a book about the end of the world by Nazis. Bluebeard , a mock-biopic of abstract expressionism was his best book, his worst probably Galapagos , although Timequake was pretty horrible, too. There was this kid in my class named Stuart in 7th grade who purported to date Vonnegut's daughter. [...]

Via Lily Allen's MySpace blog: "Every interview I do at the moment I'm getting asked how I feel about Amy Winehouse. It's starting to really piss me off. I really like Amy and am totally supportive of her. Why do people always try and play women off against each other the whole time? Yes, Amy and I are both English and yes, we're both in our early twenties. Why don't they [the media] try and create a feud between me and James Morrison or Amy and Paulo Nutini? Or why not create a rivalry between [...]

Week 7 of 16 I Am Not Crazy and Neither Is Benry by Vice President Dick Cheney There's been a lot of suggestions out there that I'm going crazy . That bastard Jew Krauthammer-I don't need him defending me from Brent Scowcroft. Longtime associate Brent Scowcroft quoted as saying, "Dick Cheney I don't know anymore." Well. After 9/11, Cheney adopted a view about fighting jihadism, America's new existential enemy, that differed radically from the "realist" foreign-policy approach [...]

Now that the holidays have passed, and we have a whole year to look forward to next December, it's about time this blog got down to its regular duties. Assume that from here on out there is going to be consistent postage from Patrick and me. I'd like to tell you about an Scottish singer with Italian roots. On first listen, I didn't know what to expect--what kind of fusion rock could possibly result from this odd combo. What I discovered was something surprising--an intelligent songwriter with incredible pop sensibilities and a knack for making [...]
Curiously, trying to talk about why he's joined Rock Against Racism, Paolo Nutini gets lost in an anecdote about how he knows someone who knows someone who knows Bob Marley quite well: I was lucky enough to sit down and have a chat with Chris Blackwell, president of Island Records, who signed Bob Marley. "He told me he took Bob Marley to see a small bill of Island artists - John Martyn, Traffic and Free - before any of them had had a hit. "And he said John Martyn changed [...]
Pazzo Way way back when, Paolo Nutini was SOD, but it was a long long time ago and most of you have forgotten how amazing he is, right? So anyway, I was on my way home from the Food Van last night listening to this song and it just floored me, and I had to had to had to play it for you today. An outrageously talented 19 year old from Paisley Scotland with a striking resemblance to Jennifer Beals, his Great-Grandfather came from [...]

I was trying on verylong shirts at Old Navy this weekend (why is everything about 17 inches too long this season? I object.) and, as you may have experienced, the soundtracking in that store can vary from "Omigosh I love this song" to "Help me leap over this rack of embroidered jeans to escape as quickly as possible before my ears start bleeding." Luckily when I was in there I was enjoying dancing a little in the fitting room to the sounds of Paolo Nutini , who I've [...]

Greetings, Angelenos (and one jailbound NYer). We write to you from arctic Las Vegas where we'll be quickly doing some work at Photoshop World , feasting on a buffet or two, and taking a few pulls of Wheel of Fortune before heading back later on tonight for some things... It will be crazy sold out for Cold War Kids tonight at the Troubadour, but apparently some tickets might be available prior to the show. Amazing how big this band has gotten so quickly. That's what happens when you're good. And if you haven't heard, bidding [...]

I am sad about the news this morning that Steve Irwin ("Crocodile Hunter") apparently died today in Australia while on a dive. Stingray strike to the heart . That sucks, although I can't say I am surprised. Everytime we would watch Crocodile Hunter, I would shake my head at the insane stuff he would do, and comment that that was how he was going to die someday. I appreciated his childlike joy at the rad animals he would work with, but he'd always mess with the animals, and be like, " Crikey! She's a beaut! Now I'm [...]
