Photos: Evan Parent Source: NBC SoundDiego There is a certain etiquette shared by artists who don't make a fuss about introductions. Never to overcompensate; they're sure to trim the chatter and just play. Jeremy Messersmith has done this before. He and his accompanying band begin: complete with a cellist, drums, guitar and bass synchronize so romantically that you start to wish you'd dressed a bit more appropriately. That you'd done something with your hair. Their music calls for elegance, but not the pretentious kind because let's not forget- Messersmith and co. [...]

I'm taking a deep breath as I post this. It may be one of the last before I launch myself into festival season here in Colorado. There are a lot of amazing things coming up, but this one starts it all off. For two days (May 6th and 7th), Boulder becomes home to the Pearl Street Music and Arts Festival . Boulder is what most people picture when they think of Colorado- a small town feel with gorgeous mountain views. In the heart lies Pearl Street, which is packed with [...]

Bad Weather California Editor's Note: DeadJournalist.com takes a look at the Denver music scene in this article by Jamie Charmichael. The Denver Music Scene by Jamie Charmichael The Colorado music has had exponential recognition within the past few years for all types of music. Theaters, venues and record stores encourage all sounds and offer open booking and advertising plans throughout the state, yet most of the growth is in the diverse city of Denver. Local Denver papers [...]
A few weeks ago I lucked out by catching a very special, secret performance by Paper Bird , a seven-piece ensemble from Colorado. Their playful performance is truly something special to experience. Here is their Daytrotter Session . I highly recommend. Paper Bird - "Spit Spot" http://www.myspace.com/paperbi rdband

Paper Bird ::: Photo Courtesy of Gary Isaacs Paper Bird could easily be your grandmother's folk music. Yet timeless and gracefully kitsch-free, it's okay for Paper Bird to be your brand of folk music, too. This month marks the Colorado-based band's fourth anniversary, and according to some of their home state critics who have tracked the band's [...]

Paper Bird were lucky enough to play for a packed house, opening for Brett Dennen and Grace Potter at the Ogden last December. This set features several songs that will be on their upcoming full-length, When the River Took Flight . The CD release show is slated for July 30th at the Gothic Theatre- tickets are available from the Gothic's website. Here are Grace Potter and the Nocturnals opening for Brett Dennen at the Ogden last December. New band members Catherine Poppper and Benny Yurco fit perfectly, and Catherine lays claim to the best sounding bass tones I have ever heard in a live setting. Paper Bird are a seven-person musical machine on a mission from Denver, CO, and as a fan/fellow Coloradan, I would be super remiss to not let you in on the secret of their awesomeness. Their debut EP A Sky Underground is set to release April 6th on Park The Van, and they're playing their first of many SXSW shows this Wedneday. Banjo/harmonica player Caleb Hill gave us the skinny on Paper Bird's virgin experience. Have you ever been to Texas? Austin? Caleb Hill: Paul [...]

Lost Boys (mp3) What a great surprise to be introduced to Denver's Paper Bird . The 7-piece group of lookers brings on the real deal: good vibes, old-school musicianship on a variety of instruments including strings, horns and unadorned voices, mostly female, which blend harmoniously with intent earthiness and enough authentic passion to make you want to knee-slap or join elbows with a partner and spin around some. Paper Bird's gimmick-free, mesmerizing folk grabs in the right places and invites happy listening rather than smashing you in the head to force [...]
I've been following Denver's Paper Bird for about 2 years now I think, and I'm pretty sure that the only thing that has changed is that their songs are getting better, because when they started everyone in the band, and everyone they added to the band, was all ready amazing at what they did. For the past year now people have really started to take notice of this group, and for a good reason. It's feel good, swell down to the roots of the earth, grab yer lady and swing her 'round folk, lead [...]

No pictures from this show tonight, because I was pooped from Mile High Music Festival. But it was too good to not talk about. More on Mile High Music fest starting tomorrow. Tonight was absolutely one of the best evenings I've ever had. As some of you may know, I've been at the Monolith Music Festival for most the weekend. Well it started to rain, and I'm not much for getting struck with lightning, so I left. Luckily I was able to get to Rhinoceropolis in time (say, about 10pm) to catch the first [...]
Phewww. You made it this far. If you didn't, you're probably trying to nurse a hangover from too much fun in the sun and not enough water. Either that, or Day 2 wasn't your bag, or vice versa. The good news is that you get to sleep in for an extra hour. The day starts off leisurely at noon for Colorado's folk freakout group, Paper Bird . This next choice is fairly easy. Do you want to go with a teeny bopper type band, Jack's Mannequin , or you can go the route of [...]

This weekend, July 18th and 19th, the second annual Mile High Music Festival will be the place to experience the awkward interweaving of Tool fans with Widespread Panic fans. That's right, while Widespread will get to headline Sunday, Saturday they have the second to last slot opening for Tool. Should be an interesting changing-of-the-gaurd moment. All jokes aside, this festival has been proclaimed Denver's Best New Music Festival by the Westword ("an ideal fusion, a marriage of the local and the national, the commercial and the indie in an expansive, open-air setting"). This goes [...]
