Paperclip People, one of the many alias Carl Craig uses to release his work, released an epic track called "Throw" back in 1994. That five-note bassline has set more dancefloors on fire than 100 other top tracks of the moment combined. So was a remix by Scottish stompers Slam necessary? No, the original has been doing just fine for 15-plus years. As you'd expect, the duo's "Throw (Slam's RTM Remix)" is highly respectful of the original masterpiece, carrying that legendary bass on a bed of skipping hi-hats and housey snares that offer more snap than [...]

Painting by Joanne Greenbaum [ Planet E ] Carl Craig's output over the years has included numerous classic moments in techno and electronica. At their height, Paperclip People tracks were sure-fire dance-floor murderers; incendiary, throbbing techno that was filled with the robotic funk of Detroit techno but augmented by a rubbery, organic feel. In recent years, the legacy of those faultless releases has been meddled with through a small run of covers and remixes, the latest [...]

You can never have enough Carl Craig in your life. The Detroit techno and house don has released under many guises but for me his Paperclip People is some of his best. The track "Throw" first raised it head in 1994 and made an immediate impact with its high pitch strings and grooving jazzy synth chords. At over 14 minutes long its also the DJ's friend and one of the many classic tunes that can be found on Craig's own label Planet E . [...]

In addition to introducing the world to drum'n'bass and creating the Detroit Electronic Music Festival , Carl Craig somehow found time to start a label that has now been releasing classic house music for twenty years. From the driving minimal tech of Paperclip People's Clear & Present to the acidic jungle vibes of Recloose's Can't Take It , Planet E Communications has been home to some of the best sounds in recent memory. 20 F@#&ING Years Of Planet E: We Ain't Dead Yet , [...]
Buy These Tracks Download In 2011, Carl Craigs Planet E will be 20 years old and to celebrate he is taking Planet-E on tour throughout the world for the first time, ever. Craig will be joined by guests throughout the year including Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Dubfire, Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, Seth Troxler, Psycatron, [...]

I don't know what kind of nerve it takes to rip off the easily recognizable main loops from one of the most classic dance songs of all time, stick little bigger beat behind it, and claim it as your own, but that's what Alex Kenji & Federico Scavo have done. Now one might be inclined to point out that the original Paperclip People loop comes from Loleatta Holloway's song 'Hit and Run', and so they are just using that same loop. No harm, no foul. But I'm calling bullshit on that they just happened to use the same 2 bar [...]

[ Planet E ] ( buy vinyl ) I feel about LCD Soundsystem's "Throw" the same way I feel about the Hollywood remake of superb Swedish creepfest Let The Right One In (retitled Let Me In for the Stateside version). Sure it's perfectly adequate, but why bother? If you're reading this site, you already know how amazing the Paperclip People original (included here) is, and I can't objectively say that the LCD Soundsystem cover is bad. It's easy to see why James Murphy and his merry [...]

At any given moment, countless people are listening to electronic music, much of it directly influenced by a sound coming from the Motor City, the former home of Motown and the birthplace of a genre known to the world as Detroit Techno. The year 2010 is an exciting time for the Detroit electronic music community as it marks the 25th anniversary of the birth of Techno in the city. To celebrate, a collective of artists from Detroit past and present will be coming together to perform under the banner D25: Detroit Twenty Five. Included in this collective will [...]

[RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] An oldie but a goodie, Madlib manhandles music from India into the heavy beat that I love in hip hop these days. I had a good weekend night at Bunker in Brooklyn this past Friday, some great Detroit DJs showed up and that opened a tiny door back up in my heart for few techno classics to jump back into my life. Some smooth workings by Diskjokke, let this ride out, it unfolds nicely. Took a hour long car ride with Benoit [...]

When LCD Soundsystem 's latest album This is Happening released this summer, there were also digital versions available featuring a bonus track entitled "Throw." The track was a cover of Detroit-house master Carl Craig and his band Paperclip People, a brooding and spiraling homage to one of techno's true pioneers. And this Fall it appears as though "Throw" will finally be available physically, set to be released as the B-Side to a re-release of "Throw" on Craig's own Planet E records. LCD Soundystem's rendition is nothing short of masterful, combining endless hi-hat hits and [...]
It feels like it's been a while since we have heard new LCD Soundsystem , even though the band's stellar new third LP, This is Happening , just dropped on Tuesday. Damn you internet hype machine! But We All Want Someone (via Stereogum ) has managed to find something most of us haven't heard yet - a cover of Paperclip People (aka Carl Craig)'s "Throw". The 10-minute number is currently available as an iTunes bonus track, but thanks to that damn internet hype machine!, you can also listen to it [...]

For the iTunes release of LCD Soundsystem's latest album, This Is Happening , LCD Soundsystem covered Paperclip People's "Throw" as a itunes exclusive bonus track. Paperclip People is Carl Craig , a producer/dj who has a heavy hand in the Detroit underground techno/dance scene. The original version of "Throw" is pretty close to perfect 15 minutes of electronic jams. James Murphy spices the song up with crunchy bass, shuffling drums, hypnotizing synth attacks, and plenty of blissful effects. This is as worthy a cover as any. Give it a try: [...]
