Welcome to the Annual Vague Space Indie/Alternative Christmas Music Spectacular (TM). I was able to set aside my great urge to say "bah humbug" to this whole season this year and to get into the mood long enough for this post, so hopefully this will get you in the spirit if you are like me and saw Christmas lights glowing in your neighborhood the day after Thanksgiving and said "Are you fucking kidding me? Already?" Anyway, merry happy or something. Enjoy. Download Bishop Allen - "You'll Never Find My [...]
After a ton of thought and internal bickering, we're finally releasing our year end lists. It took a good amount of time, and a lot of thought to figure all of this out, but I'm seriously happy with the lists we've put together. 2010 has been called a flop of a year for music, but when it comes to the EP/73 category, I really don't agree. The follow are 15 of our favorite EPs and 73 releases of the year. Keep in mind, this is just our opinion . Don't take it personal that your favorite artist isn't [...]
The end of the 2010 is approaching and I, like most self-respecting music bloggers, am scrambling to put together my year-end lists. I'm kicking it off this year with one of my favorite lists to make, the best music videos of the year. The quality of music videos this year has been outstanding, I almost feel like I've seen more great videos in 2010 then in the last three years combined, and that made it extremely difficult to narrow this list down to 25 (there's an extended Honorable Mention section to make up for it). Whether it's the work of [...]

Photography by Me! WHEE ! Happy US Thanksgiving Eve!!! Very excited! Tonight, all across America, people will be placing giblets under their pillows with hopes that the Great Gobbler will swoop down their chimneys, exchanging the less-than-pleasanet-though-ver y-high-in-iron innards for beer & Stove Top Stuffing brand stuffing! AND... if you've been an extra good boy or girl this year, the Great Gobbler will even insure your favourite team has an extra-special juiced-up syringe of steroids, to help them win "the big game". Here's [...]
So I've only gone and produced another podcast, this time using my creative zen mic, as it seemed somehow better than my desktop microphone. It's still not perfect, full of crackles and my my aim is to get a good microphone whithin time for the next podcast. Anyhows God Is In The Pod 3, is my attempt to reflect some of the acts that have graced our pages or will be featured on our pages over the last three months, I hope you enjoy the music. I intentionally picked mostly up and coming and emerging acts in order to give [...]
Someone Else's Muse - Parenthetical Girls Someone Else's Muse - Parenthetical Girls ( Free Download / Buy ) Parenthetical Girls are currently working on putting out their fourth album, Privilege, and are doing so in installments. Consisting of 16 tracks total, the album is comprised of 4 song EPs that will be available digitally and on vinyl. Each record will only be printed 500 times and, as they say it, signed in the blood of a different member. Let's hope their going for metaphor here. [...]

They say good things come in small packages – for others, good things come in short bursts -- like songs done in two minutes or less. I've always had a thing for songs that go over that the five minute mark (without you feeling that it's going for longer than expected). It's sort of like the artists playing can't get enough that they infect you with the same kind of feeling through their song. Ditties, on the other hand, are sweet. They're like those little collectible items that people just like to keep, or unexpected rare treats that leave [...]

PARENTHETICAL GIRLS // Young Throats from theartof agency on Vimeo . It often seems like Parenthetical Girls are trying to be difficult. Their name itself contains a word that most people wouldn't even understand the dictionary definition of; their lead singer has been known to number their EPs in his own blood; and latest album "Privilege" is being released as 5 limited edition 12" EPs over 15 months. Part II - "The Past Imperfect" was unleashed on 21st September and given their own obstinate methods of release (on their own label, no less), we'd [...]

As far as bands go, you couldn't get two acts with a more disperate aesthetic than Joggers and Parenthetical Girls . Joggers play "indie rock" before the term became a basterdized catchall for anything written about on the blogosphere—think Merge Records stalwarts Polvo or Superchunk—with a perfect blend of sloppy minimalism and technical craft (those guitar sounds!). Parenthetical Girls' barely play the guitar; instead the band bangs on drums and New Wave synthesizers while singer Zac Pennington dances around whatever room its playing in. But that's not going to stop me from throwing 'em together in a [...]
Only four songs this week, but four rather great ones. I've never fully embraced The Fresh & Onlys, always dismissing them as another noisy rock band signed to Woodsist. "Waterfall", their first single from the upcoming Play It Stange is blowing my mind. The vocals are clear and catchy, the guitar part is thrilling, it's [...]
Following in the footsteps of Yeasayer, Neon Trees, and Animal Collective, Parenthetical Girls has taken on experimental pop in a unique way. Their new EP, "Privilege pt. II: The Past, Imperfect," doesn't serve as a record you can simply listen to, but rather, one you must experience. "Privilege" is made up of four songs, each [...]

New track from Parenthetical Girls, which is of the second of five EPs they plan to release leading up to a new LP titled Privilege . This EP will be pressed on 500 vinyl copies, and is getting a 9/21 release via Slender Means Society. MP3: Parenthetical Girls- Young Throats -

This past June Greenpoint and Williamsburg held the second annual L Magazine Northside Festival . Last year seemed to showcase local Brooklyn and New Jersey based acts while Year two brought some slightly bigger nationally known acts. Year two showed progress from year one with better organization, but there was one problem on Friday when all the venues "were at capacity for badge holders" and a lot of Northside badge holders were left on North 6th wondering what their pass was good for (as the festival gets bigger and bigger I'm sure that [...]

Portland, Oregon based band Parenthetical Girls , who have a taste for dramatic, keyboard heavy lo-fi rock, are set to release part two of their "Privilege" series on September 21st titled Privilege pt. II – The Past, Imperfect . The band has already made available the new track 'Young Throats' from the aforementioned EP, which has all the drama and heavy layering that defines their sound. Speaking of the dramatic, the EP is being released as a limited edition vinyl with 500 copies hand numbered [...]
