Belgium is covered in snow and it's hitting the minus temperatures again. The main part of what people will be seeing of you is a winter coat, so I thought it would be a good idea to show you some different models. 1. parka's Parka's are multifunctional. You can wear them in the summer (in the evening or when it's raining) or in the winter (with many layers underneath or buy one with a woollen inside). I think this will be my next buy. [...]

The first hump day in March here in Halifax called for a very specific soundtrack this morning. Spring is coming, but there's still a fairly bitter chill in the air, so I searched for a band whose name reminded me of winter, but whose music could energize me and get me prepped for the warm weather on the horizon. And preferably, the artwork from said band's most recent album could have some sort of Napoleonic cat on the cover. I'll admit I thought that finding such a thing would be impossible, but into that void stepped [...]

I have this thing about cleaning my house before I go away. It doesn't make a lot of sense, because I am perfectly willing to live with the mess while I'm home, but the thought of coming back to a cluttered and dirty kitchen just makes me crazy, so I always straighten up and vacuum before I leave. Today, to complicate matters, it's snowing outside--again--and so even if for some strange reason I didn't feel compelled to do it, I'm kind of stuck with nothing else to do, so I did an extra [...]

Whoever manages the band Parkas should be shot. Seriously. They were smart enough to quote my 2007 review of "Put Your Head In The Lion's Mouth," in which I said "I can't think of a better rock and roll record that's come out this year." But Christ on a popsicle stick, they went and released the band's swansong in December of 2009, after every blogger of note has completed his year's best list, and way too soon to be remembered on next year's. It's those lists that move albums, guys. I personally buy at least three or four [...]

Clearly, the Parkas are followers of Neil Young 's maxim that it's better to burn out than to fade away. Despite breaking up this fall, the long-running Toronto outfit chose to release one final album, the aptly-titled You Should Have Killed Us When You Had the Chance . Of course, this strategy makes no fiscal sense, since these days it's next to impossible to make money from record sales; what's more, without a tour to promote the album, it's unlikely to reach much of an audience outside of the Parkas' existing fanbase. Still, there's something noble [...]

What's funny is that I bought a new parka the other day. I live in Vancouver, I don't actually need a parka. I could get away with a windbreaker over a sweater. Growing up on the Prairies, though, I had some parkas, yes sir. Big puffy numbers from the Hobo Shop, three-quarter length Hudson's Bay doozies, and yeah, oversized army surplus parkas. When I was 15, everyone I knew either had a green army surplus parka or was about to get one. Friday nights we slouched and loitered around the South End of Regina imagining ourselves ruthless street toughs until [...]
(photo: myspace.com) The harsh reality of being in a band in 2009 is that the odds of being around by the time 2010 rolls around are not in your favour. I can count on my fingers and toes (and those of 5 to 10 friends) all the great (and semi-great) bands that have come and gone before I've even really had a chance to appreciate them. Such is the case with The Parkas , a band who were hailed as one of Canada's most energetic live bands, and a [...]

The Parkas have been rocking Canada for eight years and have decided to throw in the towel after releasing their third album. Look for When You Had The Chance on December 1. Until then, dive into the water in your boxer briefs. The Parkas - The Gang's All Gone

I went to see the Parkas on Saturday night and I've finally recovered (note: part of this may be moving and/or drinking related). The Tacoma Hellfarm Tragedy was the first band up, who I missed... next time. Next, the Whitebelt Octopus , who drove all the way from Ithaca, NY, performed his brand of incredibly vulgar, superbly hilarious, white-boy-electro-rap songs for about 40 minutes. I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't supremely shocked by all the "hat" (see photos below), the number of MF bombs, and the number [...]

Most of the picks of the week that are made on this here blog are because I really, really, like the albums; many of them are from bands that I feel are under appreciated, and, occasionally, its because I have some type of personal connection (real or imagined) with the band... this time its all of the above! Certainly part of my connection stems from recently graduating from teacher's cottage with lead singer Michael Brown, but, I think my (vast) appreciation of the band and their work , comes from the 2006 Documentary, [...]

Today is the official beginning of Parkas week at the Burgeoning Metropolis... Next Saturday is going to be like a funeral... of a new mother. The Parkas, who are awesome and I've have said so on a number of occasions , are packing it in as a band (they're dying). And, even though they're dying (figuratively) they're releasing a new album, You Should've Killed Us When You Had The Chance (the baby), which is pretty exciting, because we're going to have a way to remember the band. [...]

Now that I'm well ensconced in my thirties, I've got the privilege of looking back on my twenties in disgust. I wouldn't go so far as to say that they were a total waste of time, they got me to where I am. But I coulda done better. I coulda done better by a lot of folks. At the very least, I coulda -- shoulda --done better by the many people who tried to help me. The other day we were browsing the online Arts & Entertainment section of the [...]

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had picked up A Life of Crime , the documentary by Jon Eagan and James Loftus on the Parkas , their 2004 cross-country tour, and the subsequent "re-organization" of the band. It was a little strange watching the moving since, as I mentioned previously, I know Mike Brown from school; and, after seeing him in that context for the last 8 months, it was neat seeing him in his other life. The movie itself was a really interesting look at life in [...]
I know it's been a while since the last Just Burn It! mix but you may have noticed all the changes to the site instead. Well as site tweaking settles down I'll be making more mixes for y'all. Lets start with this one! As spring arrives there are often days that turn out to be less warm than we would have hoped. I often find these days to be the most depressing. At least in winter you know what to expect but during these transitional times it can be tough. Hope is often higher than the [...]
