Singer Catherine "Cat" Harris-White and rapper Stasia "Stas" Irons, otherwise known as THEEsatisfaction , met in 2006 while attending the University of Washington. Stas first encountered Cat while attending her open mic performances. Initially intimidated by her powerhouse performances, it took her some time to drum up the courage to to approach her, but once contact was established, the pair embarked on a partnership that would find them featured as guest performers on Shabazz Palaces' 2011 album, "Black Up" . This collaboration led them to being signed to [...]
It's that time of year again. Time to put the kids to bed and pull out the trees because today it's all about caring less than you ever will on any other day. A joyous time when everyone comes together to share a common interest and using it to enhance everything around them. A time when Mary Jane pops some cherries and shines down upon the world with a pocket full of gold. This embodiment of freeing the human soul becomes ever more sacred with the sound of music at your ear while you puff that happy stick. You can't [...]
Funkadelic guitarist extraordinaire Eddie Hazel's lone solo album finally available on CD.

At a P-Funk show, no one goes home until the roof lifts off the mutha sucka. With what looks to be at least two busloads of people on stage, and enough groove to disrupt an entire part of town, they come, they go off and they get down. You can't shake it. You can't fake it. And you sure as hell can't hate it. On Friday night, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic did what they do best in front of a sold out crowd in Portland. The revolving cast of characters that make [...]

What's up kids? I've got a doozy for you all today: a 1.7-hour playlist of songs about space. Why? Just for kicks, and because it gives me an excuse to post this link: www.spacetelescope.org/images/ archive/top100/ Which, if the URL doesn't make it obvious, is a collection of the 100 "best" space telescope pictures, and, I gotta say, there's some great ones, for sure. But anyways, about the music! 18 songs from a wide variety of genres and time periods, all with titles and/or subject matter relating to space. The ILS [...]

I don't know where this came from, but I'm simultaneously getting really into funk and gospel music. Funk was the original party playlist genre and I think it's undervalued in that category now. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that disco took everything good about funk and screwed it up. But if you heard this song playing at a party, wouldn't you be into it? It's Detroit's Parliament doing "Flash Light."
We take a look at several up-and-coming acts from this year's Outside Lands that may have been overshadowed by headliners like Arcade Fire and Phish. Their reputations for infectious and enthusiastic live performances is what earned them their time on stage, and also the reason for their surges in exposure after the festival ended less than two weeks ago. Look inside for audio clips.

It has been two and a half years since I last posted a Any Major Funk mix. Most of the tracks contained in this, the sixth volume, have been languishing in the shortlist folder since then. So here are 16 more songs from the great era of dance music, stretching from 1977 to 1983. While I'm at it, I have updated the expired links for the first five volumes. Michael Henderson has played with the greats. Having moved to Detroit as a child, he was only 13-14 years old when he [...]

Parliament : Unfunky UFO [ purchase ] "Objects, natural or artificial, real or imagined…" When I posted this week's theme, I implied that songs about UFOs were fine, but nobody took the bait. Instead, we stuck to natural celestial objects. It made for a great week, but here's a little taste of what might have been. When Parliament went out on their 1976 tour for the album Mothership Connection, they created a spectacle. Each show opened with a spaceship landing on stage. A hatch opened, and the band in [...]
