Cotton Mouth Black Hand When Martin Horn isn't slaving away behind a mixing console, putting polish on the music of a number of Montreal's brash new faces n' names ( Parlovr , for example), he's... Slaving away in front and behind of a mixing console, writing and producing his own music under the moniker Cotton Mouth . In the case of the EP from which this song is taken, produced for an [...]

Here's some new material from Montreal's Parlovr (pronounced Parlour), from their self-titled debut coming out next week on Dine Alone Records . Formed in the winter of 2006 by guitarist/vocalist Louis David Jackson and keyboardist/vocalist Alex Cooper, the band really took form when drummer Jeremy MacCuish joined and became the a catalyst to fuse the foiling songwriting styles of the original two. Sounding like 'Sloppy pop', expect polar opposites in their sound; 'quiet and loud, screams and whispers, sing-alongs and spacey instrumentals, warm low-end and crisp, shimmering leads; short pop jabs and extended epics.' Take a listen. [...]
Tuesday, June 1, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: Don't forget that Brad from the local blog Both Sides Of The Mouth will be making his debut post here at SOTO tomorrow (John Michael is out for at least the summer). The guy does some pretty nifty art and knows what he's talking about, so be sure to drop by and take a look. Also, from June 21 to June 27 the site is going to be on break, as I will be hanging on in San Francisco that week. If you [...]
Parlovr are three ones born in a Parc Extension loft of that name in the late months of 2005. Two errant songwriters on either end of the ring and a mesmerizing electronic artist-cum-referee standing in the middle come together to mash orchestral pop, punk and dark dance to make their own brand of heavy-hearted sloppy pop. Perhaps weird, they dance on reverb and puzzle each other with their... [[ This is only a preview. View the webpage to listen to each track on the New Music page. ]]

Back as 2008, I was hoping the few tiny ripples I made in the in the Parlovr pool would grow into a tsunami sized wave of hyperbolic buzz. Obviously it didn't, but the band's hustle paid off when they signed with Dine Alone records. It's hard to hear Parlovr and not recognize the talent and energy they deliver with their blend of frantic indie rock, noise and soaring anthems, but the man behind the knobs deserves some credit for the end result as well. Every time I [...]

Montreal rockers Parlovr have released the track list for their upcoming self-tilted LP set to drop June 8th on Dine Alone Records . Listen to their most excellent track "Pen To The Paper." They are anticipated to announce an east coast tour in the near future, so stay tuned and plugged in. MP3: Parlovr "Pen to the Paper" Parlovr Pen To The Paper Sandwalking On The Phone Hiccup! Once again Montreal is giving birth to another new band sure to make waves on our side of the border, Parlovr . The group is releasing their self-titled debut on June 8th here in the States, and it will include this track "Sandwalking." It has a real loose rock n' roll feel to it, which means the band is sure to be incredible live, not to mention providing us with an energy-fueled debut LP. Personally, it sounds a lot like The Constantines , and that's a compliment. Download: [...]

Toronto - Well the dust has settled on another Canadian Music Week. I've had an opportunity to take a step back and have a good think about the shows I've seen, so I'm ready for my recap. Best show: It's a tie between Plants & Animals and the last 20 minutes that I saw of the Handsome Furs set. I'm going to go with the Handsome Furs because it was so intense and energetic. Best show from a band you have never heard before: [...]

There's nothing new to post in this week's Friday Five. These are just tracks that get me up and out of the house for work. Once out of the house, they ease my two-foot commute. Everyone has their own tracks that gets them up and at 'em. Here's what got me to work this week: The Lovely Feathers - In the Valley Sigur Ros - Untitled 1 (Vaka) First Aid Kit - Ghost Town Palovr - Pen to [...]
Parlovr (pron: Parlour) were on Spin Magazine's recent list of the top up and coming Montreal acts . I saw them at Pop Montreal and they were amaxxxing. These are from their self titled 2008 debut. They have a new album in the works which is going to blow up huge(you heard it here first y'all). They are in France right now, then hitting up SXSW before making their way across Canada with We Are Wolves to the Biltmore, April 15th. Parlovr - Pen To The Paper [...]

December 18th was surely a fun time at Cafe Dekcuf. It was a festive holiday mood besides Cafe Dekcuf being cold when I got there. Playing there were: The Balconies Here is a video of The Slo that I taped. Sorry on the focusing part. Parlovr [...]
This is kind of exciting except that it is almost four months until South by Southwest in 2010. The bands from the list are mostly up-and-bands but there are also bands like Fanfarlo and We Are Scientists that are more well-known. A lot of the rising artists include Dan... Thursday was a chock-o-block full kind of day at M for Montreal. Starting with an afternoon schmooze session filled with managers/agents/promoters and more business cards than the free lunch bowl at any TGIFridays and shows going until the early morning, delegates were on the go. That being said, Friday was just as busy. A few panels started the day - which I sadly had to miss to keep my day job rolling - but the afternoon church show/book launch was a perfect start for my Friday. Mark Berube & The Few - Mark's [...]

I didn't do any CMJing tonight or today, so I decided to get these photos out of the way. I have spoke about most of the bands shown here already except We Are Wolves, but I didn't see them so I can't really say anything about them. Did I mention the free Poutine? I seriously ate 3 of them! Shout out to Poutine on 168 Ludlow Street and Jesse for hooking that up. PARLOVR [...]

My first event of the day yesterday hit the nail on the head. It was called Will Blog for Booze and you know what I am. The first band, Parlovr, who I saw twice yesterday really impressed me and I loved their attitude. They called out everyone at Bowery Electric for not standing on the dance floor and hovering around the bar. Granted they were giving away beer (Magic Hat at that), but it was great to see them do that. Call out jaded music industry people and hanger-ons. They deserve it. You will see how few people were in [...]

Last night was all about New Zealand, and they showed me a few things. One, they know how to drink Vodka better than most, and 2 that they have a great selection of up and coming acts (pictures to come later). Tonight is all about Canada, our neighbors to the North. Unlike New Zealand, Canada already has a hell of a "indie" music reputation with Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire (Yes I know one of them is from Texas) and Feist hailing from there. Here are a few of the bands I checked out that I am excited to see [...]

This is like my post withdrawal of Pop Montreal. Here is my album picks for this week. Japandroids - Post-Nothing Ever having this album in vinyl format, finally got the CD version. Such fun rocking crazy album and seeing them live is ten times better. Best tracks: The Boys Are Leaving Town Young Hearts Spark Fire [...]

It's another mailbag style post, but this is more because of the sheer amount of awesomeness that was sent our way over the last couple of days. Three artists we've covered a lot on the hill all hit us off with some news within 24 hours, so it makes sense to deliver the news to you good readers. First off, our good friend Michael – aka These Hands – is premiering his new LP exclusively on herohill. Home is Everywhere is a long time in the making, or [...]

Saturday was the busiest day for Pop Montreal. Being my last day to attend this festival, there was alot of bands and musicians that I saw. The Passovah Pop Montreal BBQ had to be moved to the Green Room due the rainy weather. Playing at the Green Room which I saw: Cotton Mouth Green Go Parlovr The D'Urbervilles [...]
