Oy vey, it's Video Vriday! Just in time for the upcoming Rose Festival, here's a new video from Scout Niblett , which must have been filmed at last year's Rose Fest. Niblett is no stranger to wearing wigs, but here she goes one step further with full Snow White regalia. She fits right in, while the slow-burning, seething undercurrents of the track "Gun" provide a bizarre and hilarious counterpoint. Scout Niblett's new album, It's Up to Emma (her first name is indeed Emma), comes out this Tuesday, May 21, [...]

Lots of things have happened for the Parson Red Heads in the last few years. They made the trek from Los Angeles to their native Oregon, settling in Portland,; they released the lovely album "Yearling;" and the band's married couple Evan and Brette Marie Way had a baby boy. Even with a baby in tow, the Parson Red Heads are jumping on tour to promote their latest EP, "6." Although their releases have always featured honeyed folk with a dash of psychedelia, the EP is a "bite-sized glimpse at our musical progression over the past year or so," says Evan [...]
The list of bands looking to channel the feel and sound of '70s Laurel Canyon folk/rock is long and growing longer but few can match The Parson Red Heads in their ability to sidestep soundalike retreads and bring their own songwriting -- and instrumental -- chops to the forefront. The follow up fall full-length to the Portland, OR, outfit's excellent 2011 Yearling is in the works and the new track "Times" is something of a preview arriving as part of a new six-song EP 6 due June 4. [...]

The Parson Red Heads are re-releasing their sublime Yearling not too long after it originally came out, and you should absolutely listen up this time. The Parson Red Heads are re-releasing their record Yearling a year and some change after its original appearance - apparently the same length of time it took to record in the first place, lending the referential title a little bit of extra potency. With some additional tracks to fill out this "deluxe edition" of a record that didn't make much of a splash, it's as if the band is trying again, saying [...]

THE PARSON RED HEADS, HE'S MY BROTHER SHE'S MY SISTER, RAYLAND BAXTER ( Mississippi Studios , 3939 N Mississippi) Evan and Brett Way—husband and wife, and one-half of the Parson Red Heads—had their first child last year. If Portland's music city is known for taking vintage sounds and making them contemporary, then the Parson Red Heads should be crowned as royalty. Rarely do you see songs executed based purely on phenomenal songwriting through the traditional sounds of folk, country, and pop. But the result from what the Parson Red Heads bring to the music world is a timeless quality with the ability to rock out like there's no tomorrow. The Parson Red Heads will be releasing a deluxe version of 2011's Yearling at Mississippi Studios on Thursday. This is [...]
Watch new videos featuring F.U.R.S and a taster for their excellent debut single Striptease , and the Parson Red Heads video for Another Chance is a color-saturated, send-up of the static, poker-faced videos of early Black Sabbath. See Batman and Superman get drunk and make out in Sunshine's video for Showering With Wine and finish with the scorching wildcat blues of two-piece Deap Vally's new single Lies . a a [...]

Tomorrow, Portland's The Parson Red Heads will be be releasing a deluxe re-issue of their 2011 album Yearling adding the six tracks that made up their EP Murmurations via Second Motion Records . To coincide, the band put together for a video for "Another Chance" inspired by the videos of the 60's with the band playing in front of a psychedelic backdrop. From the band: This is our first foray into a video beyond [...]
These Friday music videos might be starting to be a thing. No promises, though. Not too many videos today, but let's jump in. Andrew Sloan directed this stark but magnetic video of Y la Bamba singer Luz Elena Mendoza for the song "Michoacán," off the band's Court the Storm album from last year. This clip is totally great, for obvious reasons. While it's not a new Y la Bamba song, there will be some new Y la Bamba songs very shortly. The band has a new EP finished [...]

Well another year has passed and I figured this would be the year I wouldn't post my Christmas mix but a few folks I like and others I hadn't heard of have released some Christmas music so here we are again. As I say every year: these may be holiday songs but many of them are solid songs period - many deal with themes if lost hope, loneliness and the rigors of the holiday season. In fact several of these songs remain some of my favorites - you be the judge - check them out and see which [...]

A little over two years has passed since Los Angeles parted ways with the Parson Red Heads , but even after they returned to their hometown Portland, Ore., the warmth of their melodies has stayed within the L.A. community. With last year's release of "Yearling," they've offered more of their sunny psychedelic folk-pop tunes for us to keep in the Golden State, and there's more where that came from. The quartet will release a deluxe version of "Yearling," which features six bonus tracks like the elegant ballad "Another Chance," on Jan. 22 via Second Motion Records. But if you're [...]

The Parson Red Heads - Another Chance
The Parson Red Heads - Infinitely more irenic than ironic, this nine-year-old Portland, OR band led by Evan Parsons (and wife Brette) is sort of a graceful, laid-back 70's Laurel Canyon version of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros...trimmed to a quartet and no longer dressed all in white (cool!) when on stage, the band's second project was produced by occasional band member Raymond Richards and mixed by the legendary Chris Stamey of The dB's... // Release : Yearling Expanded Version (November 6) (Released a year ago and now out [...]

Finn Riggins Crowd by Glenn Landberg A week or so ago, I lost the battle with my jelly legs and ringing ears. Inside the most packed, sweaty Neurolux I’ve seen in my limited 21+ lifespan, even the sweet sound of the Cave Singers couldn’t keep me from fleeing to topple into bed by eleven o’clock on the closing night of Boise 's inaugural Treefort Music Fest . Sitting on a sparsely populated, sunny Sunday Neurolux patio now, I reflect. Wristbands have been shed, the unmarked van to car ratio has [...]

Living in LA isn't as glorious as one might think. It's definitely not the worst place someone can call home, but my con list is easily longer than my pro list. With that said, one pro of living in LA is the music scene. It's not the best, but it's definitely in the top 10 of the US. Each and every weekend, there are a handful of shows to choose from and even though I don't even come close to taking advantage of this pro, it doesn't mean the rest of you LA locals cannot and should not. So from [...]

The fine folks at Daytrotter welcomed in Portland's Parson Red Heads this week for a wonderfully warm and harmonious set of songs. Led by the demure vocals of songwriter Evan Way, the group's sonorous approach marries perfectly with Daytrotter's intimate recording process. All four songs on the session come from the softly radiant folk rock of the band's most recent album, Yearling , their most resonant work yet; and below we've got the session's lead track, "Seven Years Ago." Check it out and then click it here to get the rest. The only [...]
