The Parson Redheads make sunny day music. I noted this in my Stylus review for last year's King Giraffe. It is now springtime in Los Angeles and everything is 85 degrees and radiant and glowing and even dedicated cranks such as myself have trouble being unhappy in these moments. This is when the Parson Redheads make sense. The group have a new EP coming out called Owl and Timber. I assume this is an homage to their Oregon upbringing, because as a life-long Angeleno I can safely say that I have never [...]

After solidifying their reign over LA with a Monday night residency at Spaceland this past January, and a performance on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, The Parson Red Heads return with a six song EP on May 20, 2008 called Owl & Timber . The Parson Red Heads debut full length King Giraffe was released last year from their home in Los Angeles, and Owl & Timber keeps the ball rolling with signs of exploration and improved song-writing. Owl & Timber will be their first self-released title under the moniker Parson Farm [...]

Yeah, another slow week, but I scraped together some tracks for a mixtape... as always. It's good to hear new stuff from Augustana- I was starting to wonder if the second album would ever materialize, but the date is now April 29 and the video for Sweet and Low is out (see previous post). Otherwise this week, there are some interesting names on the list: Curt with a "C", Farryl Purkiss, Nozuka. Yeah, and a couple of new tracks from Wilco and Phantom Planet. Tracklisting: Augustana - [...]

To keep it simple – yes, The Parson Red Heads are originally from Oregon; yes, the band includes family members; yes, they do like The Byrds - and yes, only two of them are actual redheads. Moving on … when The Parson Red Heads debut full length King Giraffe was released last year, they had already earned themselves a solid reputation in their home of Los Angeles that was backed up by successful Monday night residencies at Silver Lake Lounge and The Echo - but since its release, their presence has extended past LA's city limits. The 60's loving quintet [...]

One of L.A.'s best bands is doing a little West Coast swing in support of Owl & Timber , a new EP they're self-releasing on May 20. I still haven't seen 'em myself so I'll definitely be at one of the two local gigs. Maybe both. 1. The Battle Royale - Shook Up - Immediately gripping and sounding like a glorious team-up of Page France and Cloud Cult, this Battle is laying their cards on the table up front. It's an acoustic sing-a-longer with a nice unexpected piano bridge. I doubt this song will ever feel dated. [from Wake Up, Thunderbabe | buy ] 2. The Parson Red Heads - Crowds - This is lovely, and it reminds me so much of The Arts & Sciences, a band I'm [...]

MOKB really liked The Parson Red Heads when we first heard them early last year. Their full-length debut , King Giraffe , was criminally left off our Best Of 2007 list (it's easy to forget about these first few months at the end), but they're coming back with a new EP, thankfully, to help us through our winter doldrums. Here's a track from it... The Parson Red Heads - [...]

This blog hasn't given local acts nearly enough shine over the past 12 months, but here's some records from Angeleno bands that I enjoyed. If you're looking for other, probably more informed local lists, I highly recommend checking out You Set the Scene , Rock Insider, and Surfing on Steam's . 10. Last December, The Parson Red Heads' Monday night residency at The Echo drew large audiences every night and even made it into the venue's "Top 10 highlights of 2006", now a year later, the group who regularly varies from 6 to as many as 12 will be bringing their unique blend of 60's psychedelic rock with multiple harmonies to Silverlake hot spot, Spaceland, for the venues much sought after Monday night residency in January. Joining the Parsons will be local and touring acts, including Idaho Falls , Mezzanine Owls , Everest , Lonely H [...]

Jess Harvell's thought-provoking Idolator piece on the nature of the hype machine beast has left me a little wary (at least today) of contributing to the instant deification (followed by the subsequent de-construction) of yet another promising young band. So I'll keep it simple. Besides, I've written about the Parson Redheads before once or twice or thrice. I've probably seen the Parsons six times in the last 12 months and during that time frame they've gone from virtual unknowns playing the Derby on a Wednesday night [...]

Sunday, June 24th: The Parson Red Heads @ Detroit Bar The Parson Red Heads seem to be playing somewhere in LA every week, but this week they've decided head south. Also at The Prospector in Long Beach on Tuesday. w/Brothers & Sisters, My Pet Saddle! The Parson Red Heads - Days Of My Youth ( mp3 ) Monday, June 25th: Casket Salesmen @ Rhythm Lounge I kept confusing the name of this band with the midwest's Casket Lottery, but [...]
The Parson Red Heads debut LP, King Giraffe, capitalizes on the best attributes of past 35 years of Golden Coast musical heritage. Like The Broken West, The Parsons are doing their part to re-usher in the laid back retro-vibe that has been sorely missing from the L.A. scene since canyon rockers The Beachwood Sparks [...]
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that exchanged mixes this time around, it was a really good group and I think our best exchange yet. This is the least themed of any of the exchanges so far, or rather, most people personalized the themes to their music. Topo has been pushing for this the whole time and I myself went ahead and broke rank with my mix as well. I posted it here, mostly because I don't have anyones cover art at a high enough res. There will be more posted in [...]
L.A.'s the Parson Red Heads make sunny, West Coast '60s folk-rock/pop, complete with Beach Boys harmonies, Byrds-esque jangly guitars, and of course, mad tambourine and handclaps. The band, originally from Oregon, moved down to L.A., and each member adopted the last name "Parson" (my personal favorite is " Combat Parson "). Based on the above photo, I've concluded that this is a band you must see live if you have the chance. Here's an infectious track from their new LP, King Giraffe , which comes out today: The Parson [...]
Some of you may remember me ooo-ing and ahhh-ing over The Parson Red Heads this summer. I'm here to do it again! They have a brand new album coming out in February called "King Giraffe" that contains more beautiful vintage pop tunes to gush over than you can shake a stick at. The band was nice enough to give me two songs from the new album to share with you here. Listen and fall in love. Oh, and if you are in Los Angeles, they'll be at Spaceland with The Autumn Defense on February 16, so do yourself [...]
