The punk orders a beer. The slacker, this being Washington, lights up a spliff. Wimps order a pizza, get on the bar, do a big shoe dance and then on their way out knock over the row of Harley's outside. All is fine and nobody gets their lights punched out because even though they call themselves Wimps their kinda tough in a not so tough kind of way. They've also got some street cred having hung out with the Intelligence , Partman Parthorse and Meth Teet h to name just [...]

We've had seven sunny weekends in a row, which must be some kind of record for the Northwest. As such, it's been the perfect time to take out the Bimmer. And in related news, Andi's dad thought it would be a fun project to spend a weekend sanding it down and giving it a new paint job. Score. Now on to music: Stuarto, the host leading into my 10pm Friday night show at KSVR and KSVU, and I have been concocting plans. These brief quarter-hour strategy sessions that take place [...]
I saw Wimps back in November open for Wax Idols and the Terry Malts . They rocked like they already knew what the hell they were doing even though I think that it was only their first or second show. Wimps are a trio. Rachel Ratner plays guitar, sings and makes cool maps . Matt Nyce plays bass and draws . Dave Ramm plays drums and makes pizzas. Wimps are raw power with nothing in the way. It's punk rock the way it use to be; short, [...]

It's been years since Seattle's sound was something that could be easily defined. Artists throughout the Emerald City vary so greatly, there is no longer a single unifying -or flannel- element. You'll find influences immigrating here from the entire nation to join with local talent expanding the "scene" and forming distinct pockets of creativity. We have are throwback punk bands like Virgin Islands , folk-pop like Gold Leaves , whimsical rockers the likes of Spurm , and New Jack Swing stylings of Mash Hall . How can you ever hope to get an handle [...]
Police Teeth? Ugh. Good grief. This song is from their upcoming album Awesomer Than The Devil which will be available to all earthlings on April 26th, courtesy of Latest Flame Records. Between this album and BOAT's Dress Like Your Idols, I've been enjoying some of the Pacific Northwest's catchiest tunes as of late. Listen to [...]

Seattle's favorite sinister n' sloppy garage rockers The Lights have announced their "indefinite hiatus" after 13 years of tearing our town to shreds. Drummer PJ Rogalski is moving on up and the band just can't simply replace such a torched thunderer. I'd like to note, however, that the band is going out on an extremely high note, as their most recent album, Failed Graves , was a deathly, ramshackle success . Sigh. . But! - there's always a 'but' - [...]

Congratulations to the PacNW for another stellar year in music. It really outdid itself. There were quite a few bands from our region who received obscene amounts of attention this annum and even rippled the national scene with their respective records. Unfortunately, not many of them ended up on my list. Despite this cultural discrepancy, however, the bands and albums listed below represent what I believe to be the very best in Northwest music that you could've listened to in twenty-ten. Or not; I dunno, I'm just one dude. Feliz Navidad! . [...]
I've been listening to a lot of the ggnzla Crew lately: Butts, Partman Parthorse, Stephanie, Spurm . It's good, dirty fun and the ramshackle DIY miscellany that each group pours into both their performances and records is quite charming, quite fascinating, and, frankly, quite arousing (git yer mind outta the gutter; or not). It's really easy for me to get hip to the unbridled cleverness and the audacious proficiency that these "underground" punks continually churn out. Different is better! . Central District house venue stalwart [...]

In case you were wondering, summer has yet to arrive in the Pacific Northwest. It's nearing the end of June and we're just now starting to shed our thick blankets of clouds and precipitation. So enough with the weather update, let's move onto the music update. This weekend is has a lot of music packed into it. The rock and roll marathon is Saturday and there's a band every mile . I don't know too many indie rockers who run marathons (not enough irony in it), but even if you're not a runner you can get up [...]

FYI, this is a repost of a calendar entry I did a few weeks back. Just want to make sure we're all on the same page (and looking at that reaaaaaally long penis together). . So there's this poster. What's going on with that guy's penis, anyway? It looks like one of those banner advertisements trailing behind a plane (what happened to those, btw?). Is this pose yoga-porn ? Factoid: frontdude Gary Smith, who likes getting "fairly nude" on stage, moonlights as a yoga instructor. [...]
Partman Parthorse just released what is either a hilarious parody or a diss track of massive proportions on about a third of Seattle's popular local bands and it is cracking me up. In all honesty, I like most of the bands that Partman Parthorse are hating on in this video more than I like them, but [...]
Haven't heard me yappin' about PartMan PartHorse for awhile? Well, lucky for you, the band-er, frontdude Gary Smith rather, is doin' aaaaaaaalllll the yappin' necessary in this new "incendiary" video for "Emerald City Dollar Bin" . It's a new song from their upcoming third record Emerald City Dummies , which will be released June 11 via GGNZLA Records . The song is-how should we say-an "indictment", albeit a cheeky one, against a slew of local bands that may or may not be friends [...]
Here are some videos I shot a few Fridays ago (3/19) of goofy garage girls Butts at the Black Lodge on Eastlake. The first one- "Alcohol"-is my favorite of their silly, short burst party punk: "Oh alcohol! Is pretty fuckin' awesome!" Slays me every time. "Hung Over" and "Dollar Bills" are also included. You can watch one more for "We're Butts" over on my YouTube channel . The daffy duo is Rachel Ratner and Shannon Perry : the former an integral cog in local favorites Partman Parthorse who's now the resident riff [...]

Rachel Ratner has connections. . She's an on air DJ for KEXP as well as educational outreach coordinator for the station. She is also (and more importantly) the bassist for Partman Parthorse and possibly the only same person in that band, as well as one half of Seattle's "Butts" - cheeky eh? In what little spare time that leaves, Rachel somehow decided to explore some of her musical connections and inevitably the binds that tie our Seattle music community together. To do this she created a cartographic study of Seattle's musical incest. [...]
The Carousel Festival is Seattle's DIY house-scene annual extravaganza, and it begins today at 3pm. The Green House (run by the affable Natron) and the Healthy Times Fun Club -two of the most prominent house venues in town-will be hosting the event, along with Dancylvania, Gallery 1412, Black Lodge, and Cairo Gallery. Go here for comprehensive location info. . Not only is the effort for a good cause- Urban Rest [...]
One way you might think about starting off your weekend is heading over to the Funhouse Thursday night for what's sure to be a raucous, eye-popping musical event. Local mayhem makers Partman Parthorse ( Have I mentioned them ?) will be opening for like minded garage throwbacks Sic Alps and Thee Oh Sees . Both are from San Franscisco, by the way, and both drench catchy guitar pop with reverb and racket (not unlike their buds the Intelligence [...]
![Partman Parthorse: Year Of The Jerk [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1616265_lg.jpg)
One develops a special sort of affinity for Partman Parthorse once they've experienced their live performance. This is hardly a statement to take lightly; frankly put, watching Partman Parthorse perform for the first time is equatable to loosing your virginity or experiencing the stage performance of Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time. There is a special part of you that is lost forever and, as much as it saddens you that the next time will not be the first, you're definitely looking forward to that next time. [...]
I caught three great shows this weekend - and there were so many others going on all over town it was difficult to decide which ones to attend. Here's where I ended up... read more
Looks like Amelia chose the Partman Parthorse show on Friday at the Funhouse, and it looks like they put on a fantastic show. I absolutely love photos that articulate exactly how fun the show was, and this shot illustrates that perfectly. read more
very time I turn around, a new option presents itself for Friday night (tomorrow!). read more
