I am here to apologize for slightly detracting from your concert experience all year long. Why? I take photos at shows. I know it can be annoying. That said, I try my best to keep it to a minimum and usually don't use a flash (and then ramp up the contrast and exposure later). Here are my favorite 12 photos from 2011. Look + Listen: Ghost Animal @ Glasslands Downloadable: Tired (A Ceremony) [...]

It seems that the real cool kids on the blog don't do end of year lists. Well we like them and hope that those miserable sods slip in their paper shoes and find other people's dirty hankies in their bobble hats. Those artists who will be sobbing into their pillows tonight because they didn't quite make it onto our list include blistering aural adventures by: Wooden Shjips, Cave, Dead Skeletons, Eat Lights Become Lights, The Field, Moon Duo, Blanck Mass, Hills, Benjamin Shaw (sorry, Jamie), Gruff Rhys, Dels, White Denim, King Creosote & John Hopkins (robbed!), and Mike [...]

In case you have not heard, Brooklyn's own Pterodactyl have released their third long player, Spills Out via Jagjaguwar . On this record, the band continues to hone their craft. The Pterodactyl sound started out as abrasive noisepunk (check out a couple early tracks in the bonus section below). Their sound has since evolved into something more psychedelic, something a bit more pop. They have toned down the feedback, focused more on harmony and three-part croon, and added Wurlitzers , ukeleles, and Kawasaki Dual Cool Keys (a discontinued toy keyboard) [...]

Mr. Ted McGrath of the now hiatused Antimagic (and ex- These Are Powers ) has put together an album under his solo moniker ATM . The EP is called The Slow Fade , and is being released by Temple South (cassette) and Creative Capitalism (digital). McGrath has fused together numerous influences from punk, no wave, glam, postpunk, art rock and experimental pop to form these sometimes-gritty, sometimes-scary, sometimes-bleak sounds. Two floor toms (one treated, one normal), a snare, an Alesis SR-16 drum machine, a Boss SP 202 sampler, [...]

I recently heard that Parts & Labor are going on an "extended hiatus". Here is their statement regarding the hiatus... Dear friends, This January, Parts & Labor turns 10 years old. We're planning a string of celebratory shows, in which we play selected material from all of our full length albums, leading up to a big 10th anniversary blow out on February 24th, 2012. Following these performances, we're going to take an extended hiatus. We feel incredibly fortunate having had a decade of amazing experiences — making records and new [...]

What's wonderful about Parts & Labor (amongst many, many other attributes) is there ability to progress musically without losing the soul or general theme of their music. Constant Future, when put in comparison with their previous release Receivers, is a swamp of music. A layering of post-rock, space-guitar and devolved noise in to a [...]
