It's tough to name-check windmills without bringing up the image of tilting at them. The unhinged squalls that rattle throughout Total Folklore , the second solo album from Parts & Labor' s Dan Friel , honor the characters implied in the track list. Like Ulysses and Don Quixote, Total Folklore is both bitingly clever and completely insane. Through an inscrutable network of synths, pedals, and scavenged machinery, Friel floods familiar pop structures with alien noise. While some electronic music doesn't mind bearing the stamp of a particular Ableton patch or Moog preset, none of [...]

When Parts & Labor announced their retirement, an audible howl of anguish came forth from BBO terraces; gentle tears dripped from our cheeks and short-circuited the resistors and wires as we knelt in silence over our shrine to the Brooklyn noise popsters. But dry your eyes mate. It became apparent not long after this despairing news that Dan Friel was going it alone and taking much of what made Parts & Labor so great with him; Total Folklore is the result. Stripping away the vocal element of P&L, Friel delivers an album of top-notch [...]
When I speak with Dan Friel a few weeks before the release of Total Folklore, the former Parts & Labor frontman’s longest and most colossal-sounding solo album to date, he’s sitting in a taxi cab, ... read more
Meghan Remy has typically worked alone at songwriting and performing in her experimental pop project, U.S. Girls . But this time around on her fourth album, GEM , released late last year, she enlisted a bit of outside assistance to help her bring her ideas to fuller fruition. Her husband, Toronto musician Slim Twig helped in the production and recording of the album this time around, helping shine a bit of daylight on her gritty basement sound. Although Meg toured with a band last year on some European dates, she was back playing solo [...]

Dan Friel's song, "Thumper", continues to amaze us, just visually this time. Former Brooklyn noise-rock collective Parts & Labor member Dan Friel will release a new solo album, Total Folklore, on February 19th...
Listen to Dan Friel's song, "Thumper", which is a more appropriate name than toe tapper. Former Brooklyn noise-rock collective Parts & Labor member Dan Friel will release a new solo album, Total Folklore, on February 19th through Thrill Jockey Records . He's released the experimental noise conundrum that [...]

Parts & Labor frontman Dan Friel has a new glitchy, noisy, and melodic solo album on the way via Thrill Jockey Records , and the title is Total Folklore . The first track to drop from it is streaming above, "Thumper." It's as abrasive as it is beautifully shimmering. Look for this LP on Feb. 19th.

Well, this sucks. The noisy New York band Parts and Labor will be packing up their knobs and pedals in early 2012, going on indefinite hiatus. They'll have a few local shows before it all ends (including a performance next week at CMJ), and one out of town show in Ithaca. The full schedule for the last days of the band is below. Parts and Labor tour dates: 10/19/11 - Brooklyn, NY - Union Pool 11/18/11 - Brooklyn, NY - Death by Audio 12/03/11 - [...]
NYC's Parts and Labor are one of the few rock bands on the scene today to successfully and convincingly integrate electronics into their sound (Way haywire electronics, I should add), and have always been a favorite of both I Rock Cleveland and the Cleveland concert audience in general. Now, after ten years, they're placing themselves on indefinite hiatus. BJ Warshaw and Dan Friel have both released solo albums in the past utilizing massive spreads of hacked electronics, similar to those of P&L, and it remains to be seen whether they'll pursue solo careers or bring that same, short-circuit waiting [...]

OK, sure, earthquakes on the East Coast. Why not? Minimal damage = license to snark. Nevermind that the first few moments of fear are about as real a glimpse into our disaster instincts as you could hope to get. Unfortunately, I can imagine my last frantic hours played out inside a Sci-Fi channel disaster movie. As chance would have it, the song I had intended to post actually fits into this new context. So here's the thing about monster rock. Usually, it's some big bloozy dinosaur-type thing that stomps onto the scene and [...]

Compiling a list like our recent Best Albums of 2011 (So Far) typically leaves one with two thoughts. The first is: which records that have yet to come out will appear on the year-end list? With one of our favorite artists seemingly announcing a new album every day (Jay-Z & Kanye West, Girls, Active Child, M83, Feist, Pusha T, Dum Dum Girls, St. Vincent ...), the answer is likely: lots of them. The second, more troubling question, is: which albums did we miss? In the 21st century the constant deluge of new music can be overwhelming, [...]
Static 502 from Static on Vimeo . I'm trying to get into a rhythm with these shows. I know I haven't put any interviews in them, yet (I have a few in the can that I haven't don anything with), but I feel like keeping the momentum going is good for the both of us. Here is the track list for the above show. As usual they are in order of appearance. Hopefully it will be on TV in the coming week; my internet is disgustingly slow. [...]
Sarah Lipstate, a Brooklyn, NY transplant and former member of Parts & Labor and One Umbrella, has released her fourth album Glacial Glow , a themed foray into cinematic instrumental wisdom. Each track is very distinct and cleverly labelled but let me lay down what this is. Eight songs averaging around four minutes a song, none exceeding six minutes and none below 3:40 besides the intro. This is heavily acoustic, and one hundred percent absent of vocals; music that would be absolutely unarguably perfect on an indie movie soundtrack. "Alone Star" could easily be nominated for an [...]
