As I tucked a second swimming suit into my bag that was probably too large for the three days I’d be away, I actually said aloud to myself, and I suppose perhaps my cat, “I’m going to a music festival. On the beach. As a VIP. With a press pass.” A little yelp came next, accompanied by an involuntary jig I can only assume looked like a combination of the Bluths doing their respective chicken dances. Such behavior showed up in spurts since [CoS photographer] Josh [Mellin] texted me on a cold March morning and said, “Um, guess what I [...]

Electro-pop act Passion Pit has been gaining speed since its beginnings in 2007 as people across the country latch onto their clever beats, juxtaposed with frontman Michael Angelakos' distinctive falsetto. This band, however, is more than just a smart orchestration of keyboards, synths, and drums. Upon closer inspection, it becomes evident that Angelakos' music and lyrics map a cathartic pathway through his personal challenges. In a generation where honesty in music is rare, it's refreshing to find a musician who can be open with his audience about a battle with mental health, [...]

Photography by Nate Cover Passion Pit is one of the few bands that I've seen many times throughout the years who can consistently put on a fun, energetic show - albeit a show that hasn't varied much these past four years. Michael Angelakos is one of the most animated frontmen I've seen over recent years ( though he has nothing on Karen O ) as he runs across the stage, not standing still for even a moment, making for [...]
The first considerations when attending a music festival on the beach are sartorial. Do you opt for filp-flops to facilitate the inevitable footwear removal and thereby risk blisters from stomping on plastic slabs all day, or do you go with sneakers to account for all that pavement pounding and thereby risk carrying them around all day (or worse, trudging around with sand in your shoes)? Do you wear a swimsuit to allow for a quick dip or more conventional pants so you can keep your phone, wallet and other necessities safely close by? Do you bring along accessories like a [...]

Sun; pouring rain; more sun; more pouring rain - the Sweetlife Festival definitely had its share of weird early summer weather. But none of that detracted from the experience that was had listening to the bands playing there last Saturday. If anything, the pouring rain added to the religious experience - especially during Phoenix's set. One after another, amazing artists played at main stage, ensuring that no one would give up their seats along the pavilion - that is, until it started pouring. Though I have never previously listened to [...]

In 2010, Sweetgreen’s first ever Sweetlife Festival rocked the back parking lot of the Dupont Circle location. I remember dancing to a Hot Chip DJ set next to a Toyota Camry with my hallmates. The capacity of the lot was about 150. Three years later, I drove to the mammoth Merriweather Post Pavilion for the festival, expanded to host huge acts like Kendrick Lamar and Phoenix, with an estimated audience of 20,000. It’s not just salad anymore, either - the fest boasted a gourmet food selection that rivals that of food festivals, with mac and cheese food trucks and [...]

Following up on the announcement that the band will perform at this year's sold out Splendour in the Grass and Spin Off festivals PASSION PIT have confirmed that they will be playing their own headline shows around Australia and New Zealand. PASSION PIT are fresh off the back of dual weekend performance's at Coachella and were widely regarded as one of the best performances of the event. The LA Times claimed that ‘the band’s main stage set had the largest crowd of any Saturday afternoon’ while The Examiner stated that ‘ Passion Pit ’s live show [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Wizard Smoke (Final Show) w/ The Liverhearts, Vincas Friday, May 17 529 - 529 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta 3031616 Admission $8 In light of last week's tragic death of one of the Atlanta metal scene's biggest supporters in Steve Barrentine, it seems almost trivial to mourn the loss of Wizard Smoke . On the one hand you have a life cut far too short and a massively devastating human toll that will reverberate far outside the daily grind of Atlanta [...]
Timbre princess, Dani Deahl (who we should now be calling Queen Deahl after her recent marriage to DJ Phives inside Gramaphone Records store) gets down to brass tacks with producer Animale over an snarling crescendo flurry of ‘Sail Into The Sun’ from Gentleman Hall. Bringing things right down a notch, Chicagoan Sam Padrul combines his love for funk and disco into a synthesizer bonus-drop of appealing keys and easy-chewing toffee flavours made to make your mouth drool. Summerfest's little brother (ostensibly) is shaping up pretty nicely. They just announced a wild lineup to close out Summer with, and I tip my hat off to the organizers for including a respectable mix of established artists (Big Boi, Diplo, Passion Pit) in addition to regional heroes like Lucy Michelle & The Velvet Lapelles along with our favorite DJ and multi-instrumentalist, Big Cats! The fest takes place 8/9-8/11 in sprawling Somerset, Sconny. While you'd likely NEVER need to go to Somerset, WI otherwise, it's a gorgeous spot to camp and drunkenly float down [...]
![[SHOW REVIEW] Youngblood Hawke with guests The Colourist and Future Feats at The Triple Rock Social Club](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4941452_lg.jpg)
Often times I find myself skipping over the opening acts when I write a show review. This time, there's no skipping over the opening performances that Future Feats and The Colourist put on Monday at The Triple Rock. In my opinion, opening acts have one job to do: get the audience pumped and ready to see the headliner. Chicago natives, Future Feats, did just that. Every shred of energy in the lead singer's body was left on the stage. Midway through the second song, I [...]
