The first considerations when attending a music festival on the beach are sartorial. Sun; pouring rain; more sun; more pouring rain - the Sweetlife Festival definitely had its share of weird early summer weather. But none of that detracted from the experience that was had listening to the bands playing there last Saturday. If anything, the pouring rain added to the religious experience - especially during Phoenix's set. In 2010, Sweetgreens first ever SweetlifeFestival rocked the back parking lot of the Dupont Circle location. I remember dancing to a Hot Chip DJ set next to a Toyota Camry with my hallmates. The capacity of the lot was about 150. Three years later, I drove to the mammoth Merriweather Post Pavilion for the festival, expanded to host huge acts like Kendrick Lamar and Phoenix, with an estimated audience of 20,000. Summerfest's little brother (ostensibly) is shaping up pretty nicely. They just announced a wild lineup to close out Summer with, and I tip my hat off to the organizers for including a respectable mix of established artists (Big Boi, Diplo, Passion Pit) in addition to regional heroes like Lucy Michelle & The Velvet Lapelles along with our favorite DJ and multi-instrumentalist, Big Cats! Often times I find myself skipping over the opening acts when I write a show review. This time, there's no skipping over the opening performances that Future Feats and The Colourist put on Monday at The Triple Rock. Before there was indie music, there was underground music, which was essentially the same thing as what we now call indie, except, as the name implies, no one knew about it. In the '70s and '80s, there were reasons for why music was relegated to pop-up venues and warehouses and basements.
