Congratulations to the PacNW for another stellar year in music. It really outdid itself. There were quite a few bands from our region who received obscene amounts of attention this annum and even rippled the national scene with their respective records. Unfortunately, not many of them ended up on my list. Despite this cultural discrepancy, however, the bands and albums listed below represent what I believe to be the very best in Northwest music that you could've listened to in twenty-ten. Or not; I dunno, I'm just one dude. Feliz Navidad! . [...]
Hailing from Sydney, Australia, Parades is art-rock foursome who have recently signed to the independent label Dot Dash . The record came together DIY. Band member Jonathan Boulet (who has put out records on Modular ) chose to produce their debut album in his garage. The result 'achieves a dynamic whitewash of pop harmonies, post- rock guitars and electronic meanderings', or what some are describing as an unhinged jam session. Coming up, the band will be doing dates with Sally Seltmann and Passion Pit in Australia. Check out their track Past Lives . [...]
<img src=" http://i4.photobucket.com/albu ms/y150/Saltlick/past-lives-aa .jpg" width="425" Seattle quartet Past Lives was born from the ashes of art-punk/hardcore stud bands like The Blood Brothers, Shoplifting, and Chromatics. The band released Tapestry of Webs (recorded with Steve Fisk who, in the past, produced Nirvana, The Posies, and Harvey Danger) this past February 23rd through Suicide Squeeze. Past Lives perform tonight at The Vollrath with Roaring Colonel Records signees We Are Hex and Mark Tester (Burnt Ones lead singer) side project Blackheat. Get more details on Facebook . [...]
It's funny, I only started listening to The Thermals when I was in college, but I already feel like they're one of those bands who're always there: reliable. Dependably good. Sound a lot like Ted Leo. The threesome has a great live energy and are always fun to see in person, if not entirely innovative or exciting. Their show tonight at Brooklyn Bowl sold out, so grab tickets to this one while you still can. I'm listening to Past Lives ' MySpace page right now, and I'm not really digging it. It's interesting at least, with some cool percussive [...]
Portland's The Thermals are launching their east coast tour today, right smack in Orlando. Past Lives are joining them, whose stuff I've enjoyed recently. Maybe The Thermals will throw in their new tune, "Separate" into the set list. Listen to it on their MySpace . That track is featured on a split with The Cribs to be released on Record Store Day, April 20. The new album is supposed to appear this fall--a project they're working on with Chris Walla. [...]
On their debut LP, these Blood Brothers alums dial it down considerably, favoring slow builds over fiery spazz-outs. Though they were best known for the breakneck tempos and blisteringly heavy riffs of their first three albums, by the end of their tenure, Seattle glam-core heroes the Blood Brothers were penning songs that were longer, more restrained and more deliberately paced. It should come as no surprise, then, that Past Lives, which is essentially the original Blood Brothers lineup minus helium-sucking vocalist Johnny Whitney, continue to push in that same direction. Just as Whitney...

Your Halloween Weekend as a One-Sided Conversation
So much to do this weekend and you only have 72 hours to do it. Why is partying so stressful!?! Ugh. The things we put ourselves through as social mammals. It's exhausting. What's your costume? Where are you going to be? Who are you going to be with? How are you going to get there? [...]
Show Preview: Choose Your Own Adventure: Capitol Hill Block Party Day 2
Blood Red Dancers ::: photo by Abbey Simmons "We've come a long way together…through the hard times and the good…" You begin your day with three other people sardined into your twin-size bed and a Fatboy Slim song blasting on your alarm clock radio. Who knew the Fruit Bats would be Seattle's best aphrodisiac? I'm not saying [...]

Video Hook-Up: Parades – "Loserspeak In New Tongue"
"Loserspeak In New Tongue" is the latest single and video taken from the debut album of Parades , Foreign Tapes . I've talked about drummer Jonathan Boulet in the past and for good measure, he's pretty awesome. Parades are pretty awesome as well; the Australian quartet (that expand into a nine-member live show) really keep me on my toes craft memorable, clean melodies. Next time they come to the US, I want need to see them. They're also going on tour in June, so if you like what you hear, check [...]
