Tenniscoats - Baibaba Bimba ( mp3 ) Pastels/Tenniscoats - Vivid Youth ( mp3 ) [...]

So here we are at Day 2 of the "Best of 20093 Blogger Crew and today is a monster post from E. over at Das Klienicum . It's a monster because he is posting on his top 50 albums of the year and he even has ratings broken out by number of stars (ranked out of 5 as best)....ummm, top 50 people!! There isn't gushing, there isn't microscopic dissection of each album in order to create some sort of reasoning, there is simply that feeling when you just know that this album is good and [...]

Glasgow's The Pastels teamed up with Japans' Tenniscoats on the new record Two Sunsets which was released by Domino last week. I've always liked The Pastels (except when they teamed up with Jad Fair , but that had nothing to do with them, more to do with my longstanding dislike of anything Jad Fair touches) so this latest pairing looks to be fantastic. Unfortunately, I've been too busy to give the full recording a listen, but if you can use this Jesus & Mary Chain (who also [...]
This week's podcast features Girls. They're a Cali duo who like to play it safe. Their debut album, titled Album, isn't groundbreaking or adventurous, but it is catchy. Pulling heavily from bros like Elvis Costello, Wreckless Eric, and the Beach Boys, this album was classic before it was pressed. We've also got new tracks from Wildbirds & Peacedrums, Islands, and Alvin Band.'Tis a podcast that

Happy Friday people! It's been a hectic couple of days as the flow of email here at POP Stereo HQ has been insane. If you've read this blog recently, and I hope you have, you'll no doubt have noticed that the number of daily posts have increased to two or three. This is due to the influx of great material that has been sent our way. I've also been sorting through this folder of older email. Within that folder are quite a number of things I meant to post but apparently never got around to. As [...]

Check out the double-A side from The Pastels [ MySpace ] and Tenniscoats [ MySpace ] ("Vivid Youth") which is available now at Domino's online shop ; it's a pretty cool collabo, for sure. If you're not into videos, well, I will have you know that these two bands also put together a phenomenal cover of Jesus and Mary Chain 's "About You" that you can grab free of charge "after the jump" [...]

Seemingly against the odds, the slow romance of the Pastels and Tenniscoats births a truly cohesive and purposeful album that belies its casual beginnings. When Stephen McRobbie's voice wafts in for the first time on the third track of the Pastels' collaboration with Japan's Tenniscoats, it feels like waterfall gently washing away the space between the band's seminal 1997 masterstroke Illumination and today. The track, "Song for a Friend", introduces the uninitiated to the gentle power of the Pastels - a touchstone for current C86-inspired bands like the Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Our last glimpse of The [...]

I really like both of these bands individually, but as all-time indie arranged marriages go, this superficially perfect match doesn't quite dunk the biscuit, as far as I am concerned. It's fey and wan and awfy, awfy twee but honestly it lacks bite. Imagine a cover of some of Belle & Sebastian's dreamier material, but without any rhythmic zip, melodic inventiveness or vocal bite. That comparison material is pretty close to the limit in terms of being just a little too breezy for my taste, and this album is a considerable distance the wrong side of that particular [...]
The legendary Glasgow group are making a record with the Japanese group Tenniscoats, which will see daylight September 22nd. The album will be released by Domino Records . This collaboration which eventually became the Two Sunsets album arose from a suggestion by Tenniscoats that some studio time be booked while they were in Glasgow, just to see what happens, and maybe to try to find out what it is that they have in common. The first recording was promising and slightly rushed, but suggested enough to carry on. Tenniscoats had often been playing [...]

Two of my favourite bands, The Pastels and Tenniscoats , have joined forces, and the result of their collaboration will be released on Domino Records on September 22. The album is called "two Sunsets", and after living with it on repeat for more than a week, I am sure this one ends up in my top 5 of 2009. It's a wonderful record, and it has everything I love by these two bands inside of it. I can't describe it better than that, and the easiest thing is to show you a video and give you an [...]

Glaswegian twee legends Pastels have teamed up with Tokyo twee duo Tenniscoats for a collaborative album called Two Sunsets. Due out on Geographic/Domino September 22 in the U.S., the album features this Jesus and Mary Chain cover, "About You". Download: Pastels/Tenniscoats - About You (The Jesus and Mary Chain cover)

Is it twee or is it chamber pop? Eh, pretty much the same thing really. Pastel and Tenniscoats have teamed up to make a collaborative album titled Two Sunsets. In it, they cover the sweet feedback sound of Jesus and Mary Chain's "About You." MP3: Pastel/Tenniscoats - About You (Jesus and Mary Chain cover)
As part of a new socially conscious nonprofit called "Twee Without Borders", the UK's Pastels and Japan's Tenniscoats are joining forces to bring endearing pop music to the masses. In September, their collaboration will result in a full-length album, and one of the tracks is a Jesus and Mary Chain cover.
