This show began like any other, but without the transition difficulties. All was smooth. The music, on the other hand, was not. After a long, satisfying week, I was in need of some loud, abrasive rock music. But it wasn't all like that. Due to the cold weather, I mixed in some beach pop, fuzzy dream pop and good old garage rock and pop. Don't forget to hit up the bottom of this post and listen to two tracks from the playlist! "Torn Curtain" by Television [...]

The man behind Jigsaw Records has insurmountable knowledge about the most underground of bands, of obscure labels from all corners of the planet, most of which favor various subgenres and sub-subgenres of indie pop. This knowledge should not be regarded lightly, as Chris McFarlane has had his eye on the industry, and in some form has been a part of it, for a very long time. McFarlane is the purveyor of great underground pop music from his brick and mortar shop dubbed Jigsaw Records in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. The [...]

Let me tell you a story. In 2007 some notable things happened. I attended the annual music festival SXSW (the image above is of myself and The Lovely Sparrows' Shawn Jones, taken by Abandoned Love Records/Virgin Of The Birds' Jon Rooney), I grew a mustache, and I met a beautiful girl named Andi. She was waiting for her uncle (Eno of Spoon) at the Capitol Hill Block Party. We hit it off and ditched the after-party to get a sprite (her) and coffee (me) at Denny's in Ballard (sadly no longer there) at 1:30am. I [...]

On June 6, 2006, FensePost went live. Since its inception, I've written more than 1,000 album reviews and countless features, track reviews, live reviews, and video reviews. My collection has grown exponentially. I have a room in my house devoted entirely to records. CDs go in the living room and I'm out of shelving space. To say FensePost has become a big part of my life would be an understatement. It's as much a second job as it is a hobby. Above photo of [...]
![Patience Please: Parallel Plots [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1910532_lg.jpg)
I've been looking forward to hearing more from Patience Please and when I heard that their latest EP, Parallel Plots , was stocked at local record stores in Seattle, I couldn't resist running out to pick them up. I was so early, in fact, that the stores had yet to put them onto the shelves. Ray Proudfoot fronts the group with emotive yet educated gravely vocals and punchy guitar while Keenan Dowers, the sole female, provides the group with organ and backup vocals. Rounding out the group are Jordan Michelman on bass (also the key lyricist in [...]
< > While it may not technically be October yet, the air outside is certainly starting to feel like it. So, whether you are excited for the change of seasons and feel like celebrating with a ton of great music, or if you are depressed about this and feel like drowning your sorrows in a beer garden, the 2007 Fremont Oktoberfest has it all. Featuring two different stages and three days, there is a surprising amount of good local music. Saturday brings with it an excellent array of performers, almost all [...]

Today is day three of the Athens PopFest and last nights show was just stellar. Everything ran a bit late and New Sound Of Numbers didn't play at all but Australia's Ninety Nine was well worth sweating through. This was one of the bands I was most excited to see and I didn't talk to a single person who wasn't wowed by them. I wound up working the side door at Little Kings because the whole event was so busy and packed with people and, hell, I don't mind [...]
The fine folks of Patience Please have posted a new tune on their myspace page from their forthcoming LP, titled "Fleeting Frequencies." It's clear that they enjoy alliteration (their EP was called "Parallel Plots"), as well as speedy indiepop that reminds me of one of my favorite 7" singles from the mid-1990s from a band whose name completely escapes me. I realize that's a completely useless description for everyone but me. So, to make up for it, here is an mp3 from Patience Please. It's a different tune than the new one on [...]
There's a good show happening tonight (4/26) at The Crocodile with Elf Power, Lillydale and Patience Please. So, in celebration and preparation, I thought I'd post some mp3s from those bands. Elf Power's "An Old Familiar Scene" Lillydale's "Broken Stereos" Patience Please's "Antediluvian"

In a gripping new feature called Undiscovered, Richard explores the world of underground rock music and sheds light on some select samples from various 'undiscovered' releases. Let's look on, shall we? Dark, wordy, and theatrical, The Televangelist and the Architect's sophomore album Diaries of the Intelligentsia is a record loaded with message. 'The Unconscious Collective' shows glimpses of Cursive and Bright Eyes while the lyrics focus on the search for fame and the obsession of belonging through fake rebellion. Listen! [mp3] The [...]
As I said yesterday I have been making my way through some of the bands who were unknown to me prior to the results of the Twee Net 2006 Poll. Some have been pretty disappointing including the wonderfully monikored Casper & The Cookies who sadly don't sound as good as their name. There again they have been around for years so I doubt they will notice me missing. I have heard some good things previously regarding London's The Argonauts . The music was 1960's tinged but the songs I listened to dulled the senses. Maybe [...]
