Esmerine... "New" is a bit of an elongation of the truth seeing as their first record was released back in 2003, but the three-letter word describes my recent relationship with Esmerine just right. Formed by (now former) members of both Godspeed You! Black Emperor ( Bruce Cawdron ) and Thee Silver Mt Zion ( Rebecca Foon ) over ten years ago, the Montreal explorers of cello and percussion limits have released a number of illuminating [...]

Vanessa Heins They couldn't have known it at the time, but when naming their 2011 album Shapeshifting , Montreal's Young Galaxy were describing not only their sonic shift from well-worn dream-pop to sleek, futuristic disco, but in their fortunes as well. Their first couple records had failed to launch them into an orbit commensurate with their band name but Shapeshifting would make them, if not stars, then an act who were genuinely doing something fresh and interesting and well worth watching. It was a fresh start that not many [...]
As a portmanteau, I can't say I've yet been particularly convinced by the fusion of folk and electronica that is, at least purportedly, folktronica . I guess Deco Child makes for just about the best example that springs to mind of a cogent conflation, though otherwise it's a nebulous genre categorisation to say the least. And yet still, there's a brilliant lucidity to Midnight On An Island from London's John Elliott, aka The Little Unsaid , on which the flippant erraticisms of electronica quite patently meet with the lukewarm homelinesses of folk to form one of the [...]
Imagine you just woke up in a hospital after being in a coma for who knows how long, and while you were asleep, zombies had taken over the world. You've got a few things to take care of. First, what type of weapon can you find? Second, what's going to be on your zombie-whacking soundtrack? While zombies and the movies have been a popular combo in pop culture since George A. Romero's Night of the Walking Dead , nobody had managed to make a successful zombie television show. That is until AMC and Frank Darabont came up [...]

Today categorically has to be the low in an itself unspeakably dire week. You know the ones encrusted with an impenetrable crud during which little, to nothing works out alright? Yeah, this is one of those alright. But then occasionally, every now and again, something absolutely blinding permeates the gloom and that, right here and so too right now, comes from Maryland ensemble Mt. Royal . 'Baltimore City has become known for having a robust and diverse music scene', or so goes their blurb and though the city's musical outpour is doubtless robust, I sometimes set about wondering how diverse [...]

In the history of modern music I don't think there's ever been quite so many lovely songs with falsetto vocals being made as there are today. Maybe I'm wrong. Either way, the angelically soaring vocals of Canadian singer-songwriter, Patrick Watson , are a delight to listen to - and deserve a place in my growing 'falsetto favourites' list: The video above is by Chloé Poirier Sauvé from Canada, who won a competition set up by Watson and creative group [...]

"Blackwind" by Patrick Watson , off 20122s Adventures In Your Own Backyard (Domino Records). The video was born out of a video-making competition run by creative group Genaro in partnership with the band. Filmmaker Chloe Poirier-Sauve 's beautifully well-crafted and fantastical entry was selected as the official video. Patrick Watson says, "It struck us as more than a music video: it stands on its own as a work of art."

Patrick Watson plays in the sand in new video. Patrick Watson has released a new video for "Blackwind" off 20122s Adventures In Your Own Backyard. The "Blackwind" video directed by filmmaker Chloe Poirier-Sauve....

Paolo Calamita He may have migrated habitats from Calgary to Vienna, but Mark Andrew Hamilton - he who is Woodpigeon - remains one of Canada's great, underappreciated musical treasures. Though 20092s Polaris long-listed Treasury Library Canada raised his profile considerably, it may lie with his fourth album (or closer to fortieth, depending on how you count his many interstitial releases) Thumbtacks & Glue to properly elevate his status to where it belongs. Thumbtacks refuses - if you'll excuse the pun - [...]
