Montreal musician/self-titled band Patrick Watson —whose clanking, clattering, crooning, unpredictable Wooden Arms was one of my favorite albums from 2009—are heading out on their first US tour for a long time. Catch Watson and his band at the dates below… but why no Boston, hmm, guys? Don't tell me I'm going to have to go all the way to NYC to get my fix. Patrick Watson - 2010 Tour Dates Apr 21 Rimouski @ Salle Desjardins-Telus Rimouski, Quebec # Apr 22 Sept-Iles @ Salle de Spectacle Jean-Marc Dion Sept-Iles, [...]
Nice Tropicana spot with a nicer soundtrack, Patrick Watson 's " Great Escape ". (via Dog & Pony Show ) He's coming to Cafe Du Nord May 26th. Do not miss! The Ümlaut caught his band there last time and it was gorgeous. Patrick Watson 's third full-length album Wooden Arms did what any good album should do, and divided music critics last year. While some praised it's audacity to experiment with nods for album of the year, others denounced its sound as too organic and went as far as describing the sound as "a group of classically-trained buskers"; while I tend to lean with the latter, I am not far enough over to become part of the busker camp just yet. Sometimes using what sound like household items can make a song (see: Cries of the Dead from [...]

Hi! My name is Desirée and I'm new here at BIYL. It may take a post or two for me to get into my groove, but I'm excited to be able to share with you some of the awesome music that crosses my path each and every day. I grew up in various cities just outside of Toronto, Canada, which fostered a love for the brilliantly diverse music that comes out of this country – from the east coast to the west and everything in between. Indie, Rock, Punk, Folk, Hip-hop – there are no genre limitations to [...]

If last year retrospective was called ' Laisse Moi Tranquille 2008 ' since it was quite fitting considering the fact that I wanted nothing else from it, 2009 on the other hand was quite different, like I said in my previous post, it shared it's own of ups and downs but the pace was more stable than 2008… leaving me time to breathe, which was a very good thing. Anyway, I've always found that making lists was a bit egotastic as everyone has different tastes and rarely you will find an universal list for anything, at least a [...]

ARTIST: Hey! Rotate This. 013 The 2009 Thursday 30 in memory of Martin Streek. With an mp3 download for one song from each album on the list. DATE: 12-31-09 WRITER: Bill Adams Okay, so this year was a great one for music on several levels. First, there were a tremendous number of great albums released both by established bands (like Dinosaur Jr., Manic Street Preachers, Bob Dylan, Meat Puppets and more) and new, untested acts (including Cage The Elephant, The Low Anthem and Care Bears On Fire), thus [...]
by QC staff Well, hello there. How've you been? How was the year? What did you do? Who did you see? Why did you make the decisions you made? Did they turn out well? Did your mistakes become happy accidents? Did you hear that song? You know which one. Wasn't It great? How about that show? The one where they... yeah, that one. I almost cried when I saw that part where he... We don't really believe in lists here. We prefer conversation to soap boxing; we enjoy the transfer [...]

This is so beautiful, something to keep you warm as the arctic gradually spreads its icy tentacles across the country. Patrick Watson won the Polaris Music Prize back in 2007 with his debut 'Close To Paradise' so there's no mistaking his talent. The follow up 'Wooden Arms' appeared earlier this year and contained this impish delight. On this occasion he is joined on vocals by Katie Moore and the duo ably prove that sometimes simple is all you need. The piano and banjo parts are understated and at no point disturb the delicate crooning. Everything is in its right place [...]

9. Dan Mangan (Vancouver, BC) Nice, Nice, Very Nice [mp3] Dan Mangan - Robots Elsewhere: Pick of the Week #42 A couple of months ago you couldn't go anywhere, and when I say "anywhere" I mean a Canadian based or Canadian music blog, without hearing about Dan Mangan. Now that his album has been out for a while, the very clever video for "Robots" has been released , he's done touring [...]

170 disques écoutés cette année, et une sélection impitoyable pour en tirer ce classement de mes albums préférés de 2009. October 23, 2009 from KEXP - One of my favorite discoveries of the year, Patrick Watson makes imaginative pop with a cinematic bent. So it was a special thrill to be able to record his concert at The Mercury Lounge in New York City Thursday, performed as part of the CMJ Music Festival. Recorded with the help of Seattle's KEXP , this was one of the best live shows I've seen all year, anywhere. Watson is a dynamic performer who gets deep inside the songs, and you can tell. His face contorts, his [...]

If you have not notice, I have been doing a decades list which is called MW2K . Doing a list of the best albums from 2000 to 2009. So far you can find out from #51-#100 on here . Here is #41-#50. Aaliyah - Aaliyah (2001) It was a shock in 2001 when Aaliyah was tragically killed in an airplane crash. Her music and legacy will still live on. This album [...]

Here is #11-#20 of my picks of Canadian albums of 2009 . A Mountain Is A Mouth - Bruce Peninsula Can't stop listening to this album by this big Toronto band. Best tracks are Inside/Out, Steamroller, Satisfied and Crabapples. Islands Disappear - Said The Whale A very tight in production and more of a bigger sounding album than previous album. Best tracks [...]
Patrick Watson's '09 album "Wooden Arms" is one of the albums we never spent enough time with when it first dropped this past April. We're been finally giving it a proper listen these past couple weeks, and it's pretty fantastic stuff - below you can check out an absolutely beautiful acoustic ditty off the album, Big Bird In A Small Cage . Big Bird In A Small Cage- Patrick Watson looked at me & laughed, took another sip from his glass [...]

Every song needs a home, every record needs a song or two and every year needs a fair few records. This year, the song shelters that powered dark days and enlightened nights were, in a distinctly particular order: 20. Tarot Sport, Fuck Buttons Tarot Sport from noisecore Bristol duo Fuck Buttons was just as relentless a listen as Street Horrrsing yet Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power for the first time exposed frenetically beautiful melodies for the very first time. 19.
