This is the first of a new series on HearYa called "Under the Covers." I've been listening to great cover songs that I feel are better than the originals , and it's high time to unearth them. The first installment is Patterson Hood's "The Assassin," performed by Jason Isbell. Drive-By Truckers front man, Patterson Hood, has a wonderful and emotional stripped down solo album called Killers and Stars . The standout track for me is "The Assassin," a song about killer losing his taste for killing. The reason I love Patterson Hood's songwriting is [...]

Off The Record is a recurring, feature here on the Drunkard, that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native. Off The Record gathers some of my favorite [...]

This has been getting some blog love today and I thought I'd mention it. On December 1 in Athens Patterson Hood took part in "Under the Covers II". "Underneath The Covers 23 was a benefit for AIDS Athens , with several Athens bands covering their heroes' stuff. Patterson Hood did selections from Bruce Springsteen's Darkness On The Edge Of Town . You can hear/download the entire set (mp3 or flac) over on Sloan Simpson's totally awesome site Southern Shelter . [...]
Earlier this week, the always excellent Southern Shelter posted Patterson Hood's live tribute to Bruce Springsteen's classic 1978 LP Darkness On The Edge Of Town. Recorded December 1st at the 40 Watt club, in Athens, Hood was performing in support of the "Underneath The Covers 23 benefit supporting AIDS Athens. Hood was [...]

"Underneath The Covers 2" was a benefit for AIDS Athens , with several Athens bands covering their heroes' stuff. Patterson Hood did selections from Bruce Springsteen's Darkness On The Edge Of Town (don't worry, Clarence Clemons wasn't represented). In addition to usual cohorts John Neff , Brad Morgan and David Barbe , Patterson enlisted Jay Gonzalez ( Nutria ) for the crucial keyboard parts. Track 1 - Badlands Track 2 - Something In [...]

The Athens, GA music and arts festival, Ath-fest, is less than a week away (June 20-24), but unlike last summer I will not be in attendance this year. Too bad, too, as The Whigs and Drive-By Truckers are headlining this years fest...and both bands pack a wallop of a live show. Having resided in [...]

I recently got a pretty cool little press release via email regarding a tribute to one of my favorite bands of all time, R.E.M. A group of Athens artists are getting together to release Finest Worksongs: Athens Bands Play The Music Of R.E.M. later this month on May 29th. The best thing about this tribute to me is how much Patterson Hood of the Drive By Truckers contributes. Hood performs 5 songs in all, including "Burning Hell" and "So. Central Rain", which is a [...]
Finest Worksongs: Athens Bands Play The Music Of R.E.M. is being released on May 29, 2007, on Iron Horse Records and athensmusic.net. It's a recording of a September 12, 2006, charity tribute concert that raised money for the Community Connection of Northeast Georgia and Family Connection/Communities in Schools. It'll have stuff by lots of folks, including Liz Durrett, Tin Cup Prophette, Patterson Hood (of Drive-By Truckers), and some actual members of R.E.M. (oooooh! A Stipe Sighting!) This is a Warner Bros. Records release, but I'm making an exception to the indie-only rule because this [...]

So on the night of September 12, 2006, at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia, there occurred a tribute concert to the city's most famous sons, R.E.M. . The entire story of the evening can be read here , but the upshot was that eight Athens bands spent the evening covering R.E.M. songs and the band themselves - including original drummer Bill Berry - played a two-song set and sat in with many of the other performers. The bulk of that evening's performances, except for R.E.M.'s songs and a few others, has been collected on [...]
ok first things first. you would think that as a guy that spends 75 percent of his day online that i would have found out about this little piece of dbt news before today. i dont blame jason for leaving the mighty dbt cause quite frankly, if i were him, i would not have been cool with playing third fiddle to patterson and mike, as awesome as they are. in other jason news, his solo record sirens of the ditch is being released on july 1o on new west records. he is streaming three [...]
Following James Murphy's push for "North American Scum," LCD Soundsystem is giving consumers a slew of options for the next single off Sounds Of Silver , "All My Friends." Depending on the format (7" or CD), you'll get LCD covering Joy Division's "No Love Lost" ( Bowery folks know ), a new Soundsystem track called ""Freak Out/Starry Eyes," or cover versions of "All My Friends" by John Cale or Franz Ferdinand. That's a headache to contemplate, so instead of sifting through the various formats and options, head to myspace.com/lcdsoundsystem now and take a [...]
