Patty Griffin's songs reveal multiple sides of a complicated, conflicted man. "Sometimes remembering will lead to a story, which makes it forever. That's what stories are for. Stories are for joining the past to the future. Stories are for those late hours in the night when you can't remember how you got from where you were to where you are. Stories are for eternity, when memory is erased, when there is nothing to remember except the story." -- "Spin" by Tim O'Brien One of the themes...

This fact may be hard to believe, but throughout their long and storied career the Preservation Hall Jazz Band have never released a studio album consisting entirely of their own original compositions. The legendary New Orleans act will change all that come July 9, with the release of That's It! via Sony Legacy. The 11-track record, which was recorded at the band's home-base at 726 St. Peter Street in the French Quarter, was co-produced by Pres Hall's own Ben Jaffe and My Morning Jacket front man Jim James , [...]

To say that Patty Griffin is exploring her roots on the exquisite new album American Kid (May 7, New West) is to tell only half the story. Recorded in Memphis with North Mississippi Allstars guitarist Luther Dickinson and drummer Cody Dickinson and co-produced by Griffin and Craig Ross, her dozen new songs -- her first album of original recordings since 2007 -- reflect the award-winning songwriter's most roots-driven project. Clearly she's been immersed in the acoustic traditions of Americana recently on her work with husband Robert Plant (who joins her [...]

We've been thoroughly enjoying the new Patty Griffin - American Kid - out today. There's a poignancy and emotion to these tracks that make this album of her most striking efforts in recent memory. Griffin isn't breaking the mold here, but exemplifying why she does it better than most of her peers. Below is "Ohio" the excellent duet w/ hubby Robert Plant. No shocker here, this recalls his excellent collaborative Americana record Raising Sand .
This release week finds Deerhunter trading in their atmospheric pop for straight up rock and roll, but nobody's going to mind because it's still the same edgy, dark, brilliant Deerhunter underneath all the fuzz and crackle. Another veteran changing it up is none other than Patty Griffin , whose new record, American Kid , is her very first solely Americana effort. Savages is finally releasing their debut, which will knock you on your ass and then some with its no-nonsense, post-punk [...]

In 1974 Frank Zappa and The Mothers released the live album Roxy & Elsewhere , with The Roxy part of the record culled from a three-night stand in December of 1973 at The Roxy in Los Angeles, with the Elsewhere portion taken from a pair of shows in Edinboro, Penn. and Chicago. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release, Zappa Plays Zappa have lined up a lengthy North American tour, which will see the modern interpreters of Frank's musical legacy play the album in its entirety. The Dweezil Zappa-fronted act will kick off [...]

We've soaked in Patty Griffin's "Ohio" for over a month now, but this week brings her full new record, American Kid , via New West Records . It's an excellent collection, led by a moving tribute ("Go Wherever You Wanna Go") to her late father, whose impending passing influenced the set. One virtue of being among the most consistent folk, country, or any-genre songwriters around is that you could call each release a worthy introduction. So, without further ado, get to know or continue to love Patty Griffin below:

A series of terrific collaborations highlight this May 6, 2013 edition of New Music Monday - beginning with Brian May's out-there turn with those pioneering space-music gurus in Tangerine Dream. Or at least tangentially about food. And like all good lists this one goes, in alphabetical order, to 11. The Band - "Home Cookin'" from A Musical History. A 1976 outtake, this is Rick Danko near his vulnerable best. Carolyn Mark & the New Best Friends - "Yanksgiving" from The Pros and Cons of Collaboration. Cooking to this song is tons of fun, but also guaranteed to make you wish that you were at Carolyn Mark's party instead. Descendents - "Weinerschnitzel" from Fat [...]
