When we talked to the nice folks at New West Records a few weeks ago, they were excited about the recent signing of Austin-based singer/songwriter Patty Griffin. Her new American Kid album is coming out May 7. The first single from it, "Ohio," is about the Underground Railroad, and how slaves used the network to escape to freedom. Griffin's husband and "driver," Robert Plant, sings harmony and came up with the tempo and mood for the song. Patty Griffin official web site
This new Patty Griffin tune has been on repeat today, due in part to its rhythmic undercurrent ( well put by Jeff Terich as "sustained, hypnotic momentum"). The cut - from Griffin's upcoming American Kid LP - was bringing the acoustic side of Zeppelin to mind ("That's The Way," "Going to California," etc.), when lo and behold: Robert Plant not only sings the harmonies, but also "came up with the tempo and the mood on it." He's her husband - a lovely musical marriage, it seems. Hear it above.
