Several of my friends have those playlist.com players on their myspace profiles. Most of the time, they (the players, not the friends) bug the shit out of me, because I'm usually listening to music of my own choosing when I check out their page, and I have to immediately track down the player and stop it so I'm not hearing two songs at once. I honestly believe that webpages that automatically play music when you visit them ought to be illegal. Tonite however was one of the very rare occasions when I enjoyed a myspace playlist. My friend [...]

Friday. It feels good to be on time, and to have some tracks to post. If you read my album forecast , you know there were a few good ones that came out on Tuesday. Got most of 'em (i had The Felice Brothers ship to where i'll be next week). But today you get a little taste of everything - brand new tracks, old tracks that i just got, and even one new face: mp3: The Black Crowes - Oh Josephine [...]

There I was this past weekend, wrapping up a late Sunday afternoon car wash in the driveway (washing the hell out of my wife's car due to the guilt of trading myself up for a new Honda Ridgeline - naughty, selfish husband!). I had the iTunes streaming down to the garage stereo (because I will perform no household or automotive task without background music - that would be silly). As dusk set in, and I was pulling her car into the garage, this song came on. I sat silent for a few, taking in the song. I sighed [...]
Both of today's songs are also from Grammy nominated albums but in the Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album category. Neither one of these won either. This is from Children Running Through on ATO Records. MP3 File

Ever realized that sometimes the blues can make you feel, well..... not blue? There's some kinda uplifiting quality that comes through when you hear a loud, vibrant guitar set to a a groovy melody - and maybe a harp thrown in, too. Sure, there are plenty of bluesy songs that are down right heartwrenching, but if the artists set out to write a blues tune cuz they're feeling down, then it just seems natural that a hopeful song might emerge. So on this cool, sunny day, i'm in the mood for some groovy blues...... [...]

Also for your listening, Dr King himself delivering his famous "I Have A Dream" speech from August of 1963 in Washington DC. "From every mountainside, let freedom ring." Of the hundreds of songs I've learned about from Coffee, this is among the top 5. It was last posted over a year ago. I decided it could usd a repeat . MP3 File

We debated about whether or not to publish an end of year list, but we couldn't resist. As we've both said before, Lonesome is a bit like a published version of the kind of chat we'd have anyway, so here we are to share it with you. So picture us all down the pub, (two pints of Guinness, please), and take this list as our way of asking "have you heard this?". Catherine Howe - What a Beautiful Place Easily the most listened to in the car, for the [...]

This is a mix of songs that are the last cut on albums released in 2007 by ladies. Of course, you could probably ascertain that from the title. Just call me The Duke of Redundancy. 1. Adrienne Young ~ Happy Ending 2. Clara Moreno ~ Tenderly 3. Feist ~ How My Heart Behaves 4. Bebel Gilberto ~ Words 5. Patty Griffin ~ Crying Over 6. Eleni Mandell ~ Miss Me [...]

What is that???? Sorry, the site is broken . It will hopefully be back up soon - check back! Patti Griffin - Crying Over (mp3)
Anyone divorced knows the changes that such an upheaval brings. For Patty Griffin, it was only after she divorced in 1992 that she started gaining traction as a musician. Now her contemporary folk-pop's earned her Grammy nominations, critical acclaim and...

Seven songs from 2007 that are track number seven arranged in no particular order. Antibalas ~ Age Bebel Gilberto ~ Night and Day Eleni Mandell ~ Miracle of Five Pink Martini ~ Bukra Wba'do Patty Griffin ~ No Bad News Martin Sexton ~ There I Go Great Lake Swimmers ~ I Am Part of a Large Family More 7 from '07s.

I've had this album in the car since February, and I've yet to tire of hearing it. Its very obviously an album that has been lavished with time, what sounds like expensive (antique?) microphones and other studio equipment. The sound of the room each song was recorded in really makes a difference, even on relatively low kbps mp3s. Of course this doesn't (and shouldn't) detract from the songs and the empathetic and subtle performances of the musicians. I've just re-read the paragraph above, thought about deleting it for being a bit gushing, listened to the track again [...]

I am a not-so-closeted American Idol fan. I know it's cheesy, I know that no musician I respect would ever make it out of the prelims, I know it's manipulative, crass, cynical, feed-the- money machine commercial television, but I love it. However, I will say that, week in and week out, the song choices made by the contestants are so uninspired and insipid that I sometimes find myself itching to see what the Knicks are doing. So, in the interest of improving the quality of my American Idol-watching experience, and at the same time guaranteeing the wise [...]
About four years ago I made a two disc alt.country-folk compilation, for friends, entitled "Downer Country." If I ever find a copy of it I might post it on the Drunkard for posterity. Anyway, one one of the cornerstone tracks off the comp was Patty Griffin's sparse, haunting cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Stolen Car." [...]

(Besides The Late Greats, The Duke's been busy…) In case you don't frequent the beautiful music blog, music is art , you should. Also, The Duke contributed a little someone about a song he remembers fondly. Check it out! The Duke has also continued to contribute to idio magazine , which if you haven't signed up [...]
