Paul and The Patients ' quest to release a new song each week is quite an undertaking for the Brooklyn band. We've just recently been tipped off on Paul Holmes' and co.'s aspirations, so it's been a real thrill playing catch up. Centered mostly around electronic indie pop, the 42 or so songs that they have released in the last year also touch on shoegaze and britpop. Last week's offering,"Between Space and Clouds" is particularly pleasing, as it sounds like a standout M83 track. Keep tabs on Paul and the Patients' [...]
Anthony Fantano of the excellent Needle Drop —easily the hardest working man in the music vlog world—found some time away from the camera to stop by and recommend 5 out of this world tracks. After you're done checking out the music here, make sure to head over to the Needle Drop for Fantano's always eloquent and spot-on album reviews. 1. This New York five-piece popped up in my inbox about a week ago. Currently, the band is devoted to posting one song a week-no matter what-for the rest of this year. The surprise is much of it is pretty freaking good. "The Way That You Are" is both soulful and sensual. The infectious guitar lead that opens the track never gets old. The recording isn't spectacular, but it has a homemade warmth to it. The vocals are understated, and are perfectly complemented with some bouncy reverb. Give a listen to the track below, [...]
As someone who's tried and failed numerous times to write any sort of musical lick worth repeating, I've got to say I'm pretty impressed with Brooklyn band Paul and the Patients who've embarked on a journey to write a song a week for a whole year. Now, surely there are others out there on similar quests, but in many cases, quantity comes before quality. In this case, however, it seems that quality and quantity coexist in a world of catchy but not cheesy tunes. Case in point, this little love song, "The Way That You [...]

There is an increasing amount of really good music being given away by artists via Bandcamp and Soundcloud . A couple of our more recent discoveries are below. Ghost Animal offer a twisted, haunted take on surf-pop. They have a number of free EPs available from their Bandcamp page and all are well worth adding to your iTunes library. We also have their latest track for you, In Shrouds is to MM's mind, their best yet. A frantic, but eerie, slice of garage psychedelia [...]
I have been a big fan of The Archies and their classic 1969 hit "Sugar Sugar" ever since I heard it in the 1995 American film, Now and Then. I think my favourite part of the film was when Devon Sawa asked Christina Ricci if he could kiss her. After this epic kiss, Christina Ricci threatens to beat Devon Sawa up if he told anyone. Anyhow, Paul & the Patients are a group for four guy from Brooklyn, NY. While they were preping and creating their EP, "To The Lions," which was released May 2009, they noticed an [...]

The Delancey is sort of a weird place to go see a show, and I suppose in some ways Paul and the Patients are kind of a weird band for this blog. This song reminds me of one of my favorite LCD Soundsystem songs, Losing My Edge. The satirical lyrics about relevance freaks couldn't be more representative of the way some people treat music these days. I hear you're buying a synthesizer and an arpeggiator and are throwing your computer out the window because you want to make something real. You want to make a Yaz record. I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables. I hear that you and your band [...]
~ Paul and the Patients - "Tiny Red Light" ~ A very good song, but perhaps a bit too commercial as I instantly can imagine it being used in any prime time American teen drama (maybe it already has, what do I know?). But since I like it very much, I'll overlook that. Nice contrast between male and female vocals. Kinda Snow Patrol-ish? ~ Mirrors - "Look At Me" ~ This is so deliciously 80's New Romantic to me. And this trio hails from the home of New [...]

What's That Song From the Target 'Everyone' Commercial?
Filed under: What's That Song? 'Blogspot,' Paul and the Patients The word "irony" is used often and everywhere these days, but get ready for a serious ironic pile-on by ironic hipsters from -- where else? -- Brooklyn, N.Y., in this Target ad for the retailer's Fall 2010 fashions. When Paul and the Patients recorded their song 'Blogspot,' it was a not-so-subtle jab at the hype machine known as the blogosphere. As the lyrics lament, the Internet Age has a built-in mechanism that propels indie [...]
