So what happens when a contemporary artist covers another contemporary artist? I call it magic. I mean, come on, Iron & Wine covering The Postal Service? Matt Pond covering Neutral Milk Hotel? Nick Cave covering Pulp? All awesome, all happening tonight. "Cubs In Five" The Mountain Goats "Cubs In Five" Eric Metronome This one goes out to my best friend, Pat, purveyor of Before There Was... and longtime Cubs apologist. Just messin'. He hails from Chicago and bleeds Cubby [...]

(Artist's rendering of PC & JV) Good to be back in the fold. That was scary. To make up for it, and to try and top JV, I give you my first mega-post of the season. Joni Mitchell: River Nothing beats the original. Sorry JV. Such a particular writing style. John Lennon: Happy Xmas (War is Over) Paul Anka: O Little Town of Bethlehem Frank
Under the Covers, Day 4/5 Up for Review: Paul Anka's Rock Swings , 2005 Today we switch things up a little bit -- instead of taking a look at newer takes on older songs, we look at an older take on newer songs... albeit done recently. If, in 2004, you asked pretty much anyone if the world needed Paul Anka (that, is Mr. "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" and jingle king extraordinaire) doing big [...]

I begin with a word to the wise. If you want to build up your music collection on your computer and don't feel like earning the pricey wrath of the RIAA , there is a simple solution: your public library. Nearly every public library has a CD collection. Go there, check out what they have and try some different things out. It is a no-risk way to explore music. While you probably won't find new releases, it is a great way to find things you never knew existed. Had it not been for the Monroe County [...]

What else would you call someone that systematically butchers many of the better pop songs of our generation, then releases them on snazzy CD's emblazoned with his own smiling, unrepentant face? His new album, Classic Songs My Way , is his second cover album and features the following horrendous covers: 01 "Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) 02 "Get Here" (Oleta Adams) 03 "Mr. Brightside" (The Killers) 04 "Waiting For A Girl Like You" (Foreigner) 05 "Ordinary World" (Duran Duran) 06 "Heaven" (Bryan Adams) 07 "Bad Day" (Daniel Powter) 08 "I Go To Extremes" (Billy Joel) [...]

AWESOME! Paul Anka does awesome big band covers of todays pop music. Paul Anka's latest venture is the remake of Mr. Brightside. The song starts off with some killer horns, and I can even hear some vibes! Then Anka's piercing voice starts the Killers' lyrics. His voice is very on pitch. Almost too on pitch. But anyways I would sure love to see him and his band live. That show would be spectacular. Ooh did I mention the song includes a killer sax solo? And a great ending! [...]

Get ready to cringe. Okay, so what we have here is two sixtysomething veteran singers attempting to connect to 'the kids' today (and gain some quick publicity), and what better way to do that than covering popular, edgy rock hits, their way? I'll reserve further judgements to you. They might be the type of covers you play once out of curiousity and then hit 'delete', but at least it's interesting to...um...listen. Tom Jones - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor [...]
We just told you Corin Tucker's been busy singing along with AT&T spokesman EdVed, but ever wonder what happened to Carrie Brownstein after Sleater-Kinney called it quits? Well, our favorite windmilling guitarist found a formidable partner of her own: SNL funny guy Fred Armisen. The duo, calling themselves ThunderAnt, are creating a series of videos they plan to unleash upon the world (some via Stereogum). To mark the occasion, we asked ThunderAnt to comment. Armisen passed along the following, which he duly noted "Carrie approves/helped write": For as long as Carrie and [...]

It is with great excitement that I welcome back the " Compare & Contrast " feature. The idea is to post the same song by different artists (unlike Homonym Monday which is the same TITLE different songs). Sometimes it will be originals verses covers. Or just some different versions. This week has both. While getting my "Thank You" post together, I remembered Tori's version of Zeppelin's Thank You. Zep's version Tori Amos ~ Thank You Tori has also been known to cover other songs like [...]

Manchester, England band Oasis have made headlines for years by making solid, tradional guitar-driven Brit rock/pop. They might be second only to the Beatles in terms of British band popularity. They hit worldwide stardom in the early 1990s with their album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? , but their arrogance and infamous behavior on and off stage kept them in the news in the U.S. far longer and more often, it seemed, than their music after this album. The album spawned two hit singles in [...]
