Archie Powell and the Exports It's the last weekend in April and we can't just let you go on your merry way without making a few suggestions on how best to live it up and rock it out. Grab your hippest rain poncho and brace yourselves because we're talking Archie Powell and the Exports' record release show at Subterranean, Panda Riot's gig at Bottom Lounge and Rabid Rabbit's takeover of the Empty Bottle. Up and Atom! FRIDAY [...]

Paul Cary Shake off that Grammy, uh, hangover? And get to the Whistler for CHRIP Night tonight... 1. Formerly of Cedar Rapids rock 'n' rollers The Horrors , Paul Cary has since gone on to do his own thing. That thing? Oh, just some ramshackle garage blues that's carried by Cary's blue collar howl. A bit more haunting then the anything the Million Dollar Quarter might produce, Cary's approach definitely harkens back to a time to rock's adolescence. LISTEN: "Yes Machine" [...]
I discovered many a new gem on the most recent Flamgirlant mix tape , this Paul Cary track being one of them (and probably my favourite). It comes off a really great album called ' Ghost of a Man ' (released way back in 2010). It sounds like it should be playing on the juke box in an episode of True Blood, in a scene where something bad is about to happen. Or a scene where something bad just happened. Or when two people are about to have sex. Which, I guess, means it sounds like it [...]
The Record Company are really smashing the nail of back-porch raucous blues on the head. There's a touch of melancholy in the opening swagger of "Don't Let Me Get Lonely" quickly shotgunned out of the water by a blast of throttling rock and roll. It reminds me of the best aspects of Paul Cary but [...]

The Great Society Mind Destroyers Three going-out-with-a-bang-isn't-us ually-my-style-but-let's-see-w hat-I-can-do-here reasons to read this and then head to the Bottle tonight... 1. If you're like me, then you already know that you dig Great Society Mind Destroyers . I do. If you're not like me, but like music and really like music that is groove oriented but doesn't ask you to dance, you might find yourself digging GSMD. Just, here's the thing, GSMD love to lock in and then freak out over what they've locked in [...]

Wild Flag | Photo by John Clark What a weekend we have in store for you, Chicago. It's a big one with both Wicker Park and Sheffield Garden Walk competing for your attention with great local and national acts like Wild Flag, Wavves, Soul Aslyum, Company of Thieves, Canasta, Archie Powell & the Exports and more rocking the two neighborhood fests. Not to mention Thee Oh Sees are playing not once, but twice this weekend. Let's get ready to rock! [...]
This is a picture of Sarabeth Tucek. She makes music that's kinda of a downer, but it's like listening to aural agony, and it's amazing right after a late night of drinking with friends or if you just ran over a squirrel or something like that. Anyway, I thought this picture was just all kinds [...]

Paul Cary Album: Thee Oh Sees / Paul Cary Split 73 (Buy) Label: Stankhouse Records Paul Cary - Goner Tweet

I've been on a bit of a vinyl binge of late and one of my favorite purchases has been this split 7" with Thee Oh Sees and Paul Cary from 2009. Cary, formerly of the Horrors , released an impressive full-length last year titled Ghost of a Man , which you can still download for free at Candy Dinner . The songwriter's tangled lo-fi garage rock is spun into a reflective country ditty on the winning "Goner," which slowly crackles and jangles along with Cary's acoustic guitar and quiet breathes of trumpet. If you're inclined to go [...]

Loyal Divide OK - It's the calm before the storm, people. There are only a few days before the Springtime monster known as South by Southwest Festival awakens and all hell breaks loose. Despite the madness to come, we're proud to highlight a tiny portion of the excitement bubbling around the city this weekend. Our finest musical acts may be readying themselves for a full-on invasion of Austin, Texas, like the mighty Napoleon going to battle but first they must tread our stages once more. We've got two [...]
Former front man for The Horrors (not the British band), Paul Cary is back with a new lineup and a new set of haunting melodies. Following a split 7" with Thee Oh Sees, his first solo LP - Ghost of a Man has been met with critical acclaim.
"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning that's...

We normally post our favorite albums of the year in early December, but we've held out til now. It's crazy how some sites' "best of" lists start to pop up in mid-November. It seems a bit premature, but the majority of noteworthy albums are usually released prior to November (sorry Kanye - 11/22). While we worked on our site this month, we've taken the opportunity to check out other blogs and publications' "best of" lists for 2010. While compiling our list, we cheated twice: We revisited the Broken Bells album based on Patterson Hood's list; it is truly [...]

Tom Petty once said, "The waiting is the hardest part." South by Southwest just released the next round of bands playing next year's installment of the annual music festival and three more Chicago acts are now listed on the lineup. Indie rock legends Joan of Arc , prog-rockers Maps & Atlases and bluesy-rocker Paul Cary will join first round picks Gypsyblood and Light Pollution . The South by Southwest music festival kicks off on March 16, 2011 and runs until March 20. Other [...]

I've been watching Drew Christie's video for The Moondoggies heart-wrencher "Empress of the North" all morning and was sure to shit that it'd be my choice for the day. Sadly (amazingly) some other brilliant Sound on the Sounder got to it first. I was lost, briefly, but remembered that I was dropped to my knees [...]
