Something for Kate have returned with a new album and their first national tour in 5 years. Frontman Paul Dempsey has been busy doing with his own solo act but is now he’s back with Stephanie Ashworth and Clint Hyndman and they have just released a new album and are on tour down under. \n Something for Kate - Survival Expert (from Leave Your Soul To Science 2012)

I have to begin this post with a disclaimer. Most of these men, although handsome, could perhaps be considered a little bit old for me. Half of what swayed me to include these men in my list was their overabundance of musical talent. I want a little baby muso, damn it. And I will have one. To be honest, this list functions at best as a list of my indie/garage crushes. Some may not make the perfect father. Some may be too old. Some may in fact be taken. But this is my dream [...]
Watch Joss Stone, Mavis Staples, and Paul Dempsey sing protest classics in a televised concert.

Paul Dempsey hit Philadelphia’s Kung Fu Necktie last night, as part of his tour with Scattered Trees and the Alternate Routes. A cozy littler bar in Northern Liberties, KFN was well-equipped with a pool table, a decent beer selection, and a Bruce Lee movie appropriately playing on the TV by the bar. A red curtain outlined the stage, which was in back. And even though the crowd was a bit sparse for Dempsey’s opening set, heads were still nodding and feet were still tapping, as he tried jokingly to ease the crowd into more of a “Thursday or Friday” kind [...]

Everything is true and nothing is true. Truth is subjective, according to Australian singer/songwriter and Something for Kate front man Paul Dempsey. He has written high-energy, noise-rock-inspired pop tunes as head honcho of SFK, as well as mild-mannered acoustic guitar ballads flying solo. His recent US release Everything is True reflects intelligent and painstakingly fresh lyric-writing, beautiful interpretations of life’s most mysterious qualities, and artful arrangement and production. The record reached number five on the Australian Record Industry charts, number one on the iTunes chart, and spent almost four months on the ARIA chart. But let’s not focus [...]
Dempsey is not achieving anything revolutionary with this album, but it's solid, formidable stuff, nicely crafted with intelligence and care. On his solo debut Everything Is True, Something For Kate frontman Paul Dempsey finds himself halfway between the gutter and the stars. The Australian songwriter's limber, acoustically-based compositions suggest the unpretentious and the everyday, but rise almost imperceptibly into the ether, edged upwards by electric riffing, crescendo harmonies, and other elevating sonic tricks, most notably on "Bird in a Basement". His compelling and notable voice's default setting is downy smoothness, but it plunges into animated...

Paul Dempsey's first solo album, Everything Is True out now: If the flagrant parodoxical title of this album wasn’t enough to intrigue me, then this album hooked me with the melodic surge into the first chorus. At first his voice seemed somewhat generic for my liking, creeping too close to radio-melted pop and stereotypically angsty. But then, there’s a crescendo of lyrics and melody in “Bats,” that leads into the most misleading lyrical hook I’ve ever heard: “Nobody’s ever gonna break your heart again.” And he’s singing it so [...]

I'm picky when it comes to singer-songwriters, but I love Paul Dempsey's song "Ramona Was a Waitress." Moreover, AOL Spinner is streaming the Australian musician's album "Everything is True," which will be released in America Tuesday. Here's a clip of "Ramona Was a Waitress" and a cover of David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes," which isn't [...]

Check Out a Sample of The Band’s Live Show “Sympathy, is filled with gorgeously melancholic tracks (think Wilco meets The Lonely Forest), and we can't get enough.” –Nylon “From the opening hum and drone that becomes a choral cascade on “Bury the Floors,” to the mellow yet majestic turn of “Five Minutes,” [...]

Seems as though I've been enjoying Paul Dempsey's U.S. solo debut, Everything Is True for ages now, and even went as far as to name Fast Friends one of the best tunes of 2010. Little did I realize that this record, which I've been enjoying so, is not yet available here in the U.S. for some unknown reason. Regardless, on June 28th, Everything Is True will finally be available on this side of the world. And what [...]

As frontman, guitarist and main songwriter for the Australian band Something for Kate, Paul Dempsey has been at the helm of a band that has released five platinum and gold albums Down Under and received a plethora of music awards including Rolling Stone nods for Best Band and Best Album. In 2009 he opted for change, stepped back from Something for Kate and stripped down his sound to a one-man-band of primarily acoustic strumming and basic backing. The resulting studio sessions yielded Everything Is True , a solo album of exceptional folk/rock [...]

The good fellas at Stage Mothers cooked up a tasty showcase of oz musical treats for the Bowery Ballroom show this past Sunday. Sample them below, then be sure to indulge in a full serving at SXSW on March 19 or The Echo LA on March 26 . Here are a few MV menu selections from NYC: Drawn From Bees - These Brissy natives seduced us with their “post-apocalyptic folk,” even before they knew we were [...]
Out The Airlock Paul Dempsey may not be the tallest man on earth, but he's sure close. Seriously, he's like 7 feet tall. He is the lead singer and artistic force behind Australian band Something For Kate, releasing his debut solo album here in the states. I've seen Paul once before when he opened for Jenny Owen Youngs a few months back. For sure, standing on stage Paul is a presence because of his stature. But when you hear his voice, his honesty in his music, you hear an intimate and wistful set of songs that [...]
‘If this song is from the perspective of Mr. Miyagi, it’s really creepy.’
Mondays are for sleeping in, and then rushing to make sure you put on the right top-hat. Emma Dean, "Sincerely Fearful" Kitty the Lion, "Bird Flu" Oh No, Oh My, "Walking into Me" Paul Dempsey, "Fast Friends" Esperi, "Dialled" Hi-Horse, "The Evil" As ever, let us know who you love!

This past summer we chronicled Paul Dempsey's attempt to duplicate his Something For Kate success stateside. So far, so good, and today we're pleased as punch to be sharing Fast Friends , the second single from his U.S. solo debut, Everything Is True . Allow me to be candid here for a moment. It's getting on late October, and we've heard more than a few great songs this year from both the established (The National, Alejandro [...]

Aussie Paul Dempsey's album, Everything Is True , is now out digitally in the states and available here. The album was mixed by Doug Bohem (Elliot Smith, French Kicks) and with tracks like "Out the Airlock", it may have you imaging a less fatalistic Smith. "Bats" "Out the Airlock" "Fast Friends" Out The Airlock [...]
