I played this one a long while back, but it seemed a perfect time for it to appear again. This is from 19702s Woodsmoke and Oranges .

photo: Don Fisher The Byrds entered 1971 heading in opposite directions. As a live unit, there's no question that the band was at its career apex. The Clarence White-Gene Parsons-Skip Battin rhythm section was borderline monstrous. If anything, Roger McGuinn was the musical weak link, a disturbing trend that would replicate itself in the studio. I will diatribe later about McGuinn's abandonment of the songwriting and bandleading process. However, let's focus on White's 1971, a promising and underappreciated year of achievement. [...]
This is from Paul Siebel's debut album Woodsmoke and Oranges released on vinyl in 1970 and re-released by Rhino on CD in 2004. MP3 File yousendit
This song was originally released on Woodsmoke and Oranges in 1970. When asked how he'd be remembered, Paul Siebel said, "Well, 'He was a guy who wrote a couple of pretty good songs,'" he said succinctly, " 'What ever happened to him?' I guess it's gonna go down something like that." MP3 File yousendit

Paul Seibel released three albums, two studio and one live. Philo/Rounder was good enough to re-release a compilation in 1995 called Paul Seibel, and that's the source for this song. The Rounder album has all of 1970's Woodsmoke and Oranges and five songs from 1971's Jack-Knife Gypsy, both originally released on Elektra Records. When asked how he'd be remembered, Paul Seibel said, "Well, 'He was a guy who wrote a couple of pretty good songs,'" he said succinctly, " 'What ever happened to him?' I guess it's gonna [...]

Paul Siebel: Louise This little sad one is from a legendary record, Woodsmoke and Oranges (recently reviewed back on my home page ). When this week's theme was announced, I had Woodsmoke on the headphones right next to Plainsong's In Search of Amelia Earhart , and was confused to hear the same tune pop up twice. Turns out the song has been covered by Eric Anderson, Leo Kottke, Bonnie Raitt, Jerry Jeff Walker, Linda Rondstadt, and more! Here's another for the cover [...]

Certainly a musician's musician kind of record, Woodsmoke and Oranges ought to have a shot on anyone's shelf. Siebel's debut is a laid-back set of incredibly strong songs, maybe nothing to knock you out on the first listen, but iron solid in its replay value and a proud, essential piece of any songwriter, folk, or country rock collection. She Made Me Lose My Blues kicks off with one of the hottest intro licks I've ever heard from the pedal steel. Can't complain about that sound, can you? Paul may not possess one of the all-time vocal deliveries, but [...]
I am such a Paul Siebel fan and regret he recorded only two albums, far too few. Every time I post one of his songs here, I get an amazing response as he is one of the best singer-songwriters no one has ever heard. This is from his self-titled album and the other album is a re-release of Strangely Woodsmoke and Oranges and Jack-Knife Gypsy on the same album. MP3 File
Anyone who enjoys the music covered in this blog and hasn't seen the films of Noah Baumbach needs to hit the Netflix queue. He made my favorite film, the post-college-paralysis cult classic Kicking & Screaming (recently released in a nice Criterion edition), the charming, low-key Mr. Jealousy, and 2005's shoulda-won Oscar screenplay-nommed The Squid and the Whale (any film that namechecks Vitas
