There was nothing brave about Vampire Weekend's eponymous debut release. Just a couple of Ivy League kids making an indie-pop album after listening to an armful of Afro-pop records. Plenty of bands have done this before (See: Paul Simon, he actually went to Africa), but when Vampire Weekend handed out a few homemade EPs, the world was suddenly nipping at the bit for a full-length release back in 2006. This album, their debut, wasn't released until 2008. The band's mix of west-African pop with various other influences created a sound they've dubbed, "Upper West Side Soweto," which won [...]

So here is Vol. 6 of our ELM (electronic listening music) series of blends. "Blends" because it's more about the flow than the art of mixing. Anywho...really trying to keep these weekly but sometimes life, work and/or play get in the way... so please cut a guy some slack once and a while—this is a free series after all and I do spend hours on Soundcloud so you don't have to. I know...sounds rough, right—don't hate. This week's post is all about how Spring kind of fucks with your emotions and teases you constantly with warm days on [...]

On May 6, 1973, one day after releasing There Goes Rhymin' Simon , Paul Simon launched his Live Rhymin' tour in Boston. It was his first tour without Garfunkel.Simon warmed up for the tour in London where he introduced audiences to the South American group Urubamba and the gospel sounds of the Jessy Dixon Singers. Both would join him on the US tour. click to enlarge [...]

I heard this song a day or two ago and thought to myself, "Man! I need to post this." Then I got busy. So, here is your helping of sped up Paul Simon , a few days late. This tropical, tribal, afro-pop has been 'in style' for awhile now, but something about this song caught my ear and set it apart from the rest. I don't know what it is, but I like it. Take a listen to "You & I" by Crystal Fighters . See what you think.
jay admittedly, i love this record. i am just as surprised as you may be that that just came out of my mouth, but really its a damn fine record. The post it came from the youtubes: early sunday morning edition appeared first on Captains Dead .

{Awayland} is the second album by Villagers , one of the many indie folk bands that have appeared in the wake of the success of Mumford & Sons . Unlike many of their peers, Villagers seem to have an awareness of music outside of the folk or indie spheres, incorporating bits of electronic and Broadway rhythms into their songs. This has the dual effect of making {Awayland} a listen that is simultaneously impressive and a frustrating mess. Opener " [...]

It would be hard to find an obituary of Phil Ramome , the famed producer who passed away last weekend, without the name Paul Simon turning up. Ramone helped define Simon's sound as a solo artist having produced 19732s There Goes Rhymin' Simon, 19752s Still Crazy After All These Years and 19802s One Trick Pony - a trio of exceptional albums that are far different from each other. At a recent show in Australia, Simon took a moment to pay tribute to his close friend [...]
Music heavyweights rocked Singapore.
I'll never forgot the time I met Phil Ramone. It was on a Saturday night in 2001 at an after-party for Sarah Brightman following her concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Before my publicist friend introduced us, I never would have been able to pick Ramone out in a crowd, but I'd been familiar with his name since 1983 when I'd peruse Billboard's Hot 100 every week and see it listed as the producer of hit single after hit single from Billy Joel's An Innocent Man album. [...]

Field Report's Chris Porterfield performing live BY JORDAN MAINZER The third guy’s a charm. That is, Field Report’s Chris Porterfield is the third and latest spin off from retrospectively super indie supergroup DeYarmond Edison, the early 2000s band that also included Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and the members of Megafaun. Porterfield’s surname-anagram band released their excellent self-titled debut last year and played most of it on the night of March 5th at Evanston SPACE. A six-piece band, Field Report transformed the intimate sounds of their debut to the bourgeois suburban venue [...]
By Stef Siepel March 22, 2013 The Weekly Froth! A weekly take on six tracks, most of which have recently popped up somewhere in the blogosphere. Bit of a mixed bag with a slight leaning towards house, disco, and remixes, but generally just anything that for some reason tickled the writer’s fancy. Track of the week : ‘Rise and Fall’ by El_Txef_A ( Kasper Bjorke version) I especially love those vocal tracks that Bjorke has put on his last two albums. Those songs [...]

There is no easy place to start when talking about an album like Paul Simon's Graceland . One of the finest masters of melody known to world takes on Africa musical style with local musicians during apartheid? Are you kidding me? It's bonkers, and it was even more bonkers when the album was originally released. Americanized African-pop didn't exist until Simon deemed it so. His decree wasn't a coy flirtation with a new idea, Simon dove in. But, it also wasn't an unpalatable glob of experimentation... It was and still is a pristine representation of irresistible modern-pop that stepped [...]
