Yesterday I got stuck driving 3 hours north for a 3:00 meeting that ended up only lasting 15 minutes. When the meeting was scheduled I wasn't sure when I'd get home so I asked Beverly to cover the show for me and when I got out so early I decided to take advantage of the situation and go beer hunting. Beverly did a great job with the show and I ended up scoring a good collection of beers I can't get down here in the St. Petersburg area. Win, win if you ask me. This week's episode [...]
Thorn should know a good song when he hears it. His own works are filled with saints, sinners and the strange whose lives cannot be viewed through the prism of the sacred or the profane. The same is true of the people he sings about on the new cover record. The old childhood taunt goes it takes one to know one. But no one would tease Paul Thorn because he would whoop your ass. He's one of America's best singer songwriters, and now he has put out an album of other people's songs. I guess that considering his talent, [...]

A gourmet's selection of blues, country, soul and rock covers Paul Thorn is a Mississippi bluesman whose earlier career as a boxer still echoes in his gruff growl. Though well-known for his original, biographical songs, Thorn's sixth album is an all-covers affair. Singing the songs of other writers is a complex task, one that reflects on Thorn's understanding of songwriting craft as well as his visceral experience as a listener. He poses this set as an opportunity to "take a break from myself," but his selections from others' pens say a great deal about [...]

Oldschool blues is alive and well with Paul Thorn, just so long as you consider the mid-eighties old school. This will be love it or hate it, depending entirely on what you think about Clapton's Journeyman. Read more »
Paul Thorn is in Nettleton, Miss., standing in his front yard watching his 8-year old daughter bounce on the trampoline while he takes yet another interview call. Asked if another time would be b... Continue reading "Paul Thorn Wonders What The Hell Is Going On?" >

I did a little playlist shuffle on January 1st to get a prediction of how 2012 is gonna be. A musical version of Tarot cards, if you will. 1. Athenaeum - Flat Tire 2. Bare, Jr. - You Blew Me Off 3. Cross Canadian Ragweed - Burn Like the Sun (Hmmm, seems like its going to be a rough start in the romance area) 4. [...]

Today is Friday the 13th… it's the day we all fear, including my homeboy Obama. He text me this morning asking, "Iz 2day Fri 13th?" I was hesitant on telling him the truth because I remember his unfortunate experience at Camp Crystal Lake a few years back. It seems that there was this weird guy in a hockey mask named Jason that was going through a REALLY rough time in his life. Obama wanted to sit down with Jason to discuss the finer points, but Jason only wanted to cut people up… which didn't sit too well with Obama. [...]
Singer, songwriter, artist, former boxer and all-around-nice guy Paul Thorn has a new album out of the streets. Pimps and Preachers is its name and that alone has me intrigued. The two free downloads you can get from his website are showing a man with an ever-maturing sound. You're Not The Only One sounds a little like Steve Earle - a good thing - while the title cut has a darker, Memphis rock sound. (You can check it out below for a very limited time). [...]

Prior to forging himself into a top-notch roadhouse singer/songwriter, Paul Thorn made a living in the sweet science. He was a pretty good boxer, too, based on his 10-3-1 professional record, and the fact that he gave the legendary Roberto Duran all he could handle before a badly split lip forced his corner to throw in the towel in the 6th round. Boxers and musicians have more common than one might expect, and you could easily assemble a killer mixed CD of boxing-related songs ( Hint : Start with Dylan's Who Killed Davey [...]
As a mighty heat wave continues to seize the nation, the last thing you probably want to do is scamper out into the hot sun and dance. However, this week's particularly upbeat edition of Friday Mixtape is filled with the kind of toe-tappin', finger wavin' tunes that will make you want to boogie the night away. So what is one to do when the urge to dance is strong, but the heat prevents it? Get creative with your dancing locations. A neighbor's air-conditioned home, the back of ice cream trucks, and the penguin exhibit [...]

Hard not to follow up this weeks post of Black Coyote's "Of Strippers and Cowboys" with Paul Thorn's "Pimps and Preachers". This is a decidedly more muscular track which should come as no surprise from this former boxer turned singer-songwriter. Get the new Paul Thorn record Pimps and Preachers here . Pimps and Preachers

Yesterday , I told you that there is some great live music that's coming to Knoxville this weekend. Now I need to tell you exactly who is going to be here and when. The Belleville Outfit kicks off a great weekend on Friday afternoon (today) with an appearance on WDVX's Blue Plate Special live from The Square Room at noon. The Belleville Outfit is a six piece group from Austin who are certainly no strangers to us here in East Tennessee. They've already played in Knoxville several times including an appearance at Tennessee Shines [...]
With winter right around the corner this Wednesday is the last WFPK Waterfront Wednesday show of 2008. WFPK has organized a hell of a line-up for a finale. Paul Thorn is a new discovery for me. I've heard his name over the years, but I've never actually listened to a CD of his. Thankfully that all changed today, and Paul now has a new fan. Paul was born in Tupelo, MS ( birthplace of Elvis , if that matters to you), and grew up as the son of a Pentecostal preacher in the deep south. His musical influences are pretty obvious, as he draws heavily on the gospel music of his childhood and the rootsy rhythm and blues that's so [...]
