We are in a golden age for music fans. That's right, Paul Westerberg has released his THIRD set of new music in the last month. Hot on the heels of 49:00 and 5:05 we get 3oclockcreep and "Finally Here Once". 3oclockcreep is a 20-minute mini album which reportedly features vocals from one of our other favorite icons, Tom Waits, around the 15:00 mark. The Replacements defined the post punk musical landscape better than any other American band. Their records were thrilling, sloppy and primal - combining punk rock, Chuck Berry and bubblegum. Steve Foley never played on any of the Mats studio recordings, but he was their drummer for their final tour to support All Shook Down and was also part of Bash and Pop, whose Friday Night Is Killing Me may be the high water for post-Mats releases. Here's something that should make your weekend more complete. It's old, from 2005, but I just stumbled across it. There is a free Paul Westerberg tribute album, entitled Bring Your Own Lampshade , available for download. I haven't heard of any of the artists doing the covers, but the song selection does span Westerberh's whole career. Solo stuff like "Born For Me" and "Waiting for Somebody" are peppered with Replacements' classics like "Here Comes a Regular", "Unsatisfied", "Can't Hardly Wait", and of course, "Bastards of Young". After barely being released, Paul Westerberg's excellent 49:00 was pulled from the digital market last week. The reasons are somewhat unclear, but the almost universal understanding seems to be that it has to do with copyright issues - namely the medley of famous songs that Westerberg runs through toward the end of the album.
