Album Review: Paul Westerberg- 3oclockreep/Finally Here Once/5:05

As music fans we've had the good fortune recently to be inundated with releases from one of rock's true masters of our generation, Paul Westerberg. First it was the music collage 49:00 . Followed by the single "5:05". Now, as I reported on Friday, we have the mini album 3oclockreep and the single "Finally Here Once". I reviewed 49:00 upon its initial release. You can read that here . Now I think it's time to spotlight the other material. [...]

Two More Releases from Westerberg

Two More Releases from Westerberg Paul Westerberg , you just can't ever guess what he'll do these days...after a 4-year quiet, he releases a 43:55 mish-mash mashup of long and short song snippets called "49:00" in late July (our review on it here ), then a week or so later came 5:05 in early August, which contrary to initial belief was not the remaining time from "49" but something new altogether. Now, a couple weeks after that come two more MP3s called "Finally Here Once" and "3oclockreep." Info sent to me on it is as follows: [...]

Paul Westerberg :: 3oclockKreep/Finally Here Once

Perhaps Paul ought to drive a screwdriver through his hand more often. Not that having Westerberg out of commission for a year was a good thing, but ever since his accident, he has come roaring back with a creative vengeance. First the copyright infringin', vying for best post-Replacements album 49:00 was dropped on us, followed [...]

No Title i never got around to posting that baseball project mp3--i'm a busy man, see--but now that i'm finally doing it, i thought i might as well make it a power-pop twofer and include this seasonally appropriate and rather recent gem from saint paul : [mp3] the baseball project--"jackie's lament" ( original post ) [mp3] paul westerberg--"love you in the fall"

Yikes! Another Paul Westerberg release!

Yikes! Another Paul Westerberg release! The tail end of the summer is usually so bittersweet. Swimming trunks are put away, Halloween decorations are dusted off, and cable programming switches from summer blockbusters to brand spankin' new episodes of reality television. The worst part, for some, is that school starts again. That's why new releases from Paul Westerberg are both necessary and wanted. If Radiohead paved the way for mainstream artists to expel their new stuff on the net, then Westerberg is certainly, to quote one of the Bobby boys, "making [the form] it's bitch." Since the release of [...]

Paul Westerberg: 3oclockcreep, EVEN MORE new music

We are in a golden age for music fans. That's right, Paul Westerberg has released his THIRD set of new music in the last month. Hot on the heels of 49:00 and 5:05 we get 3oclockcreep and "Finally Here Once". 3oclockcreep is a 20-minute mini album which reportedly features vocals from one of our other favorite icons, Tom Waits, around the 15:00 mark. "Finally Here Once" is a more traditional single. Both can be purchased here for a total of $3.99. [...]

Paul Westerberg - 3oclockreep / 5:05/Finally Here Once

Paul Westerberg has gone from reclusive to downright nutty! He's releasing (apparently new) music left and right, from July's 49:00 (which Amazon has now been taken down to alleged copyright infringement or something). Now that Paul's got his fans' dander up again , he's released more songs and music through TuneCore - a song called 5:05 , which sounds like an immediate response to the legal strapjacket placed on him (catch the Ramones inference halfway through), a acoustic-tinged thang called 'Finally Here Once' (nice song), and a 20 minute track called ' [...]

Steve Foley R.I.P.

The Replacements defined the post punk musical landscape better than any other American band. Their records were thrilling, sloppy and primal - combining punk rock, Chuck Berry and bubblegum. Steve Foley never played on any of the Mats studio recordings, but he was their drummer for their final tour to support All Shook Down and was also part of Bash and Pop, whose Friday Night Is Killing Me may be the high water for post-Mats releases. He passed away over the weekend and since I'll make no pretense to knowing the man, I'll relate [...]

Paul Westerberg: "I Think I Love You" reloaded (punk masticable)

Paul Westerberg/Replaceme nts free tribute album

Here's something that should make your weekend more complete. It's old, from 2005, but I just stumbled across it. There is a free Paul Westerberg tribute album, entitled Bring Your Own Lampshade , available for download. I haven't heard of any of the artists doing the covers, but the song selection does span Westerberh's whole career. Solo stuff like "Born For Me" and "Waiting for Somebody" are peppered with Replacements' classics like "Here Comes a Regular", "Unsatisfied", "Can't Hardly Wait", and of course, "Bastards of Young". It's free, so it's definitely worth checking [...]

i can't see my forehead

i can't see my forehead apparently i dont pay attention. cause you know that 49 cents you spent purchasing westy's 49:00? yeah, well there isnt a full 49 minutes on said record! there are only 43 minutes and 55 seconds worth of music. son of a bitch, we been had! in any event, you can purchase the remaining 5 minutes and 5 seconds @ tunecore , for either a buck or $5.05, the choice is yours. no one will ever mistaken me for a music critic, and thats fine. quite frankly there are way too many people, spending way too much time, [...]

Paul Westerberg :: 5:05

After barely being released, Paul Westerberg's excellent 49:00 was pulled from the digital market last week. The reasons are somewhat unclear, but the almost universal understanding seems to be that it has to do with copyright issues - namely the medley of famous songs that Westerberg runs through toward the end of the album. [...]

The Missing 5:05 to Westerberg's "49" Release Appears

The Missing 5:05 to Westerberg's "49" Release Appears So a few weeks back, Paul Westerberg released his first bit of music since roughly 2004, a 43:55 continuous stream of music clips, fade in/outs, and other assorted oddities entitled "49"(see our review here ). Apparently, there was much discussion as to why the thing was titled "49" when there was only 43:55 minutes to it, and where was the remaining 5:05; me, I figured it was just Westerberg being Westerberg. However, Heather over at I Am Fuel, You are Friends reports today that there really was a remaining 5:05 segment to "49" and it [...]

Monday Music Roundup

Monday Music Roundup On Friday night I had the special experience of watching Prince thrust maniacally on the (very) large screen out under heavy-laden rainy skies at Red Rocks . As part of their wonderfully conceived summer Film On The Rocks series, myself and hundreds of other vocally enthusiastic moviegoers got to bask in the glow of the tiny one's sweaty brow, glistening chest hair, ruffled poet shirts, blindfolds, fancy studded purple jackets and wispy moustache in none other than (yes) Purple Rain . From the opening echoey benediction of "dearly beloved," to the [...]

49:00 not enough for you? MORE new Paul Westerberg!!!

When it rains it fricken' pours. Hot on the heels of the stellar (and dirt cheap) album 49:00 (read my review here ), there is ALREADY new Paul Westerberg material availble. This time it's just one track, entitled "5:05" (I'm sensing a theme here). Now the $0.99 price for "5:05" may seem steep after the $0.49 you paid for 49:00 , but dammit, it's Paul Westerberg for god's sake! Having had a chance to hear the song, I can tell you it's worth every penny. It will be interesting to [...]

bring your own lampshade, somewhere there's a party

bring your own lampshade, somewhere there's a party lets kick off this weekend in grand style, shall we? tonight for your listening pleasure are some sire era mats demos/outtakes. some of em are a little rough, but all are definitely worth the download. in other news, you ever go to open the door and you start proceeding through said door only to find that the door has met your foot first causing you to hit your head on the door? instant headache...awesome! btw, i love how smangs shows up and all of a sudden i am changing the way i do shit around here. Paul Westerberg strikes online again

Paul Westerberg strikes online again Paul Westerberg continues to intrigue. He -- or more likely his distributors at Tunecore and Amazon -- pulled his just-released digital album 49:00 from sale. In its place comes " 5:05 ," a new single. All of these numbers make some sense for those who have been paying attention. 49:00 was subtitled ...of your life (the word time was crossed out and life inserted), yet the album-long track clocked in at 43:55. It's clear that "5:05," which, when added to that previous track brings the total time to an even [...]

Paul Westerberg :: 49:00

Paul Westerberg's post-Replacements career has been an interesting one and listeners have dithered back and forth on the merits of each solo release, no two coming to a consensus on any one of them. But it was as universal a thought as possible that he had stumbled onto something good when the twin Stereo/Mono [...]

Album Review: 49:00

Album Review: 49:00 This might piss off a few Mid-westerners, but consider this an apology. There's not much that Minnesota can brag about. It's cold, it's tucked away above two other boring states, and there's a lack of diversity there. When your demographics are 87% White, it's hard to consider yourself culturally significant. On a positive note, they're strong environmentalists, their summers are pretty, and they happened to birth one of the greatest American acts of the past thirty years, The Replacements. More specifically, Minnesota is responsible for Paul Westerberg . Following the 'Mats last album, All Shook Down [...]

Paul Westerberg for 49 cents only.

Paul Westerberg for 49 cents only. As some of you may have heard, earlier this week musical jesus Paul Westerberg released "49:00", an album that's almost 49 minutes of a musical collage, to be purchased digitally for only ( ...wait for it ...) 49 cents. Insane right? I've never bought a song for that much, so to get an album's worth of gold is quite the deal. It's been about an hour since I got this, and now I am here looking back at what just happened: despite it's running time, "49:00" comes and goes like that. The whole thing is [...]
