This Thursday we should finally learn what Facebook Music looks like. Over the weekend, a Dutch coder discovered which music services are part of the launch of this joint social music ecosytem. Check back throughout today and the rest of the week for more. Joel Tenebaum lost a major round with the RIAA who succeeded in having his $675,000 fine reinstated. How Payola Works Today ... Or Why You Only Hear Major Label Songs On The [...]
You know what it's like when you sweat blood, cry tears, shit yourself, shit tears of cry-blood and work really hard to make something fun and awesome? Well, here's the story of No More Strangers, a little Tomas the Tank Engine party that WinnieCooper.net started at a local bar. After having our slow clap moment, in the form of an awesome, packed to the walls local bands extravaganza on our night….we got bitchslapped. Bar owner greed, stupidity, poor advising, perhaps Satan, all collided and the No More Strangers crew were informed by the host bar that things were going to [...]
I lieu of the traditional Friday 10, we've got a Friday 15 ...because I couldn't narrow it down any further. (Anyone think they know how this week's experiment shook out for me?) We'll see you back here on Monday when TVD gets a bit ...literary. The Buggles - The Plastic Age (Mp3) Split Enz - I Got You (Mp3) Simple Minds - Someone Somewhere In Summertime (12") (Mp3) Modern English - I [...]

Spotted via Billboard : While radio already pays songwriters for songs they broadcast over the air, the bill would require royalties to also be paid the artists and musicians performing the songs and master recordings copyright owners, as well. The latter payment is common in other countries and has already been enacted in the U.S. for Webcasters, satellite radio, cable radio services and all other non-terrestrial broadcasters. Read more of the article here . Read the actual text of the bill here . [...]

Businesses are failing. Hundreds of thousands of people are losing their jobs every month; at the same time, hundreds of billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars are being diverted to banks that won't divulge how the money will be spent. Christmas Is Coming is definitely a holiday song for these recessionary, economically bizarro times, even though it was recorded 25 years ago by one of my all-time favourite Canadian bands, The Payola$. The song comes from the Vancouver band's third and finest album, Hammer on a Drum (pictured left). [...]

"Respondents to the survey indicated that college radio, AAA, and NPR played the most indie music, while urban and country stations played the least." (It's slightly surprising because I figured classic rock would be in there, too, although maybe they don't count because of their playlists' set-in-amber factor?) [ Billboard ]

18 months after the end of the most extensive payola investigation in a decade and the signing of FCC sponsored Rules of Engagement, a new survey by indie label trade group A2IM shows that independent artists and labels are still being shut out of broadcast radio. According to 61 indie labels who responded to the survey: Over 92% of independent labels report no change in their relationship with commercial radio since the settlement 41% reported that payola remains a determining factor in commercial [...]

No dice...no caution to the wind. The noble Friday experiment in unchecked shuffle play whimsy has come to an end. Oh sure, sure - it was fun for about a half hour...there were the regulars (cheers whiteray! ) and the copyists...ahem...but basically, I'm just bored with Bored. It'll reappear every now and again, but from here on out the TVD bully pulpit begins each Friday morning...whatever is in constant rotation, the best of the blogs, or something that simply needs to be said. And played. And shared. It's here -- Fridays @ Random. [...]
