Taking stock around New Years is for amateurs. It takes real courage to look over your shoulder in the middle of the year. The disappointments have already started to pile up, but so have the accomplishments. The winners, the surprises, the sure bets, and the dark horses—they're all present and accounted for here. I arbitrarily capped myself at twenty albums, so there are some otherwise very good albums missing from the list: Raekwon, Africa Hitech, Egyptrixx, Ghost. But what is here is, I think, the best that 2011 has to offer intrepid listeners. [...]

Adorned in the sepia shades and black and white schemes of the early Velvet Underground, the Andy Warhol screen tests appear to be the chief inspirations for "Amazing & Wonderful." Take note Lady Gaga: there is no need to scream "LOOK AT ME, I HAVE READ THE PHILOSOPHY OF ANDY WARHOL TWICE," unless you take your fans for fools. Then again, when you name your disciples after a Howie Mandel movie.... Midway through, "Amazing & Wonderful" morphs into a Kodachrome Karaoke session. It looks like the sort of thing you expect to happen at Echo Park's [...]

Dub isn't a genre so much as a template, a scaffolding rig that can support a surprisingly wide array of sounds. Obviously, dubstep is the most prevalent iterations of dub's core sounds, incorporating dub-style production techniques with 2-step and drum-and-bass beats. But there have always been intrepid explorers in the realms of dub. Take, for example, Stefan Betke, whose first 3 Pole albums were instant classics of minimalistic dub with a distinctly Teutonic edge. The latest musical Indiana Jones to find treasure are a couple from Madison, WI, Indra Dunis and Aaron Coynes. While their debut album, Imaginary Falcons , [...]

Wake up, roll over and get out of bed. Then repeat. And repeat. Another week and another reason to try and open your eyes again. Sometimes it's like they've been glued shut and I need to pay the guy from room service to throw buckets of ice water on my face until they peel open (to quote one of my favorite fictional musician ). What could the soundtrack for this horrifying ritual possibly be? How about dubbed-out indie rock, it's face rubbed in distortion and it's body washing out into the Summer breeze. Madison is a gorgeous college town [...]

Peaking Lights ' 936 ' LP has been on heavy rotation recently here at The Beat HQ and now they've won the approval of Sir Bobby Gillespie we expect big things from them. Their beautiful dreamy pop with heavy dub leanings make them pole position in 2011's bands to watch. As always please support the music and buy the LP . Peaking Lights - Key Sparrow

Names I have heard used describe Peaking Lights' music: post-reggae, dub, and groove wave. None of them particularly do the Madison-based married couple justice, but all are accurate to a degree. Released on Los Angeles experimental pop haven, Not Not Fun , 936 fits into the lineage established by labelmates Sun Araw and Pocahaunted: psychedelic music for the new era, more atmospheric than acid-addled. The guitar lines don't soar, they shake. The keyboard colors fade and reanimate like chameleons, with inexorable slowness and unusual subtlety. Peaking Lights sound like Beach House if they actually had [...]

Peaking Lights '936' This album is really, really good and is hitting all the right spots tonight. The A side is A+. I suggest you give it a listen / pick up

Breezy, hazed summer vibes abound on this this amazing hour-and-a-half long mix that Peaking Lights put together for us, featuring sounds that (presumably) influenced the band's brilliant new album , 936 . The band says: "this here is a party prep, works good after morning coffee too, or during an afternoon chillin session, it spans from the 50's to the 90's...it's all about listening and there's some far out jams on here! hope you's dig!" If you're feeling these [...]
